Chapter 135: Clues? Yes!

"I understand. Thank you for telling me everything you know. You really are my good friend. Once this matter is over, I will invite you over for a meal to thank you for your help." Vernon said with a smile. But only Helena, who was in his arms, felt how he gritted his teeth when he said the words ’good friend’.

"There is no need to thank me. What are friends for? As long as Sister Jemma is found safe and sound, that is all we want, right?" Ethan said like the ’good friend’ that he was.

"Yes, yes. That’s all we want. Okay, I need to make some calls. Let’s talk later, okay?" Vernon decided to stop this stupid conversation any further.

"Okay. Okay. Call me once Sister Jemma is found, okay?" 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦

"Yes, sure. Bye." Vernon did not want to hear another word from this moron and hung up on the call.

Once the call was cut, he released Helena’s shoulders.

"What exactly is going on? What is he talking about?" Helena raised her voice and shouted in anger. Of course, the anger wasn’t directed at Vernon but at Ethan and Vernon knew that.

Then she recalled her flirting with the Seventh prince and stopped getting angry.

She lowered her eyes and turned towards Vernon. She pursed her lips, not knowing how to talk to him about that flirting.

Vernon heard her thoughts and sighed. He gently caressed her head.

"Vernon, I really flirted with that creepy Prince," She gathered her strength and said. It is better to be open in the conversation so that no misunderstandings would arise in their relationship.

"I know." Vernon said.

Helena looked at him in shock, "You know? Then why didn’t you ask me about it?"

She asked, but she had many doubts in her thoughts. Did he not care about her at all, or did he think she was too cheap, and that was one of the reasons for him asking for the divorce?

Vernon continued stroking her head and stopped her from thinking further, "Don’t think too much. I know why you flirted with him. It isn’t because you were interested in him. It is just a way to make him lose interest in you. So, relax, will you?"

"You knew?" Helena looked at him in both shock and surprise.

"Yes, I know." Vernon nodded.

"But how did you..." She did not understand this world anymore. When did Vernon become so smart all of a sudden? How did that even happen? How did he even know?

Vernon chuckled at her reaction. "Of course I know because I am smart."

Looking at his smug expression, Helena suddenly had an urge to smack his face.

But she stopped herself. This is not the time to get physical with this man. More important matters are waiting for them to handle.

"Ehem," Vernon knew not to push her too far, either, and turned serious. "Don’t worry. I was with you almost the entire night that day. I saw everything you did and also heard every word you spoke with the Seventh Prince. I know what happened and also what had not happened. So, I won’t misunderstand you for no reason just because of some idiot’s provoking words."

Helena slowly registered his words and nodded.

Vernon smiled, "We know each other better than to let an outsider’s words get in between us. Am I right?"

Helena heard his words, and a soft smile blossomed on her lips. She nodded, "Yes."

Now that the matter of ’flirting’ was dealt with, they went back to the topic of Ethan sowing discord between them.

Helena asked, "What exactly was his deal? I don’t remember ever having a tiff with him. I am not even close to him. Why is he trying to damage my reputation? If it were just about me flirting with the Prince, I would at least understand. There was some truth to it. After all, no one would really understand my true intentions like you did.

"But what about me talking about Sister Jemma with him and even instigating him against her? What nonsense was that? When did I ever bring up Sister Jemma’s topic in front of that creep? I don’t understand anything."

She laid out all her frustrations and doubts in front of Vernon in the open.

"I still don’t understand his intentions. That was why I let him think that I trusted his words, so I might let him slip something up." Vernon said.

Helena had a slight frown, "Did he slip anything? Except for throwing around accusations at me, I don’t think we got any clues from him, right?"

Actually, she was still angry at all the words she heard on the phone. Her emotions weren’t right, and she couldn’t concentrate much. So, she did not notice any clues.

"Of course, there are clues." Vernon smiled. "Once you calm down, I am sure you will notice them as well."

He put his hands on both her shoulders and pushed her to walk. He brought her to the kitchen and made her sit in front of the island. He filled a glass with water and gave it to her.

Helena sighed, took it, and drank it up in one go. She was still angry, alright?

"Now take a few deep breaths and calm down." Vernon sat beside her and looked at her with a smile.

Helena pouted lightly, but she followed his instructions and seriously took a few deep breaths and exhaled.

"Do you feel better now?"

"Mhmm. Yes." Helena nodded.

"Now think about everything Ethan said on the phone. You will get some clues as well." Vernon said. He did not tell her anything directly.

He knew how smart she was. He knows that she was smarter than him. So, there was no need for him to explain things to her clearly.

As long as she calmed down and wasn’t angry, she could figure everything out herself.

Most importantly, by making her think of the ’clues’ her mind could be diverted from getting angry at Ethan and spoiling her mood.

Helena blinked. She slowly recalled each and every word Ethan had said on the phone.

She analyzed loudly in front of Vernon, without hiding her thoughts, "Firstly, he heard my conversation with the Prince. That was the truth. Otherwise, he wouldn’t know how I flirted with him. So, he confidently spoke about my conversation with the Prince and then slowly added a few words.

"But the question is, why exactly was he eavesdropping on my conversation with the Prince. The party was huge with many people around. If not for wanting to hear someone’s conversation, actually no one could even be able to hear what the people beside them were speaking at that time.

"It means, he kept an eye on me from the beginning. From the way he was saying that I instigated the creepy prince to kidnap Sister Jemma, he was clearly targeting me. He wasn’t targeting the Jeffery family or the Ford family but me and me alone."

Vernon smiled and nodded, "That’s right. His target is you. But why? Do you have any clue about that?"

Helena thought for a second and shook her head, "No idea at all. As I said earlier, I didn’t even meet him many times, let alone have a feud with him."

"It’s okay. Let’s continue with analyzing the clues he left. We might find the answer as we continue." Vernon patted her shoulder.

"Hmm," Helena nodded and continued, "Second point. Whatever conversation I had with the Prince, there was nothing in that conversation regarding Sister Jemma. Also, Sister Jemma wasn’t really kidnapped. Her sister’s kidnapping was even kept under wraps the whole time. So, there is no way he would have found out about the kidnapping from any outside sources.

"Did you notice how sure he was that it was Sister Jemma who was kidnapped? Only the Seventh Prince knows for sure that the target for his kidnapping was Sister Jemma. Even though we know that as well, it was only because of your special dream. We couldn’t really be sure about that at all. We just used that dream as a basis to increase the security around Sister Jemma and nothing else.

"Yes, someone tried to kidnap Sister Jemma, and it was successfully stopped by the security arranged by Brother Vincent. But except for doubting the Seventh prince, until now, we weren’t sure that the mastermind was him. But not only was Ethan sure that it was Sister Jemma who was kidnapped, but he was also sure that the kidnapper was the Seventh Prince. Why is he so sure?"

"Yes, why?" Vernon asked with a smile while he nodded, listening to her words.

"Why? It is obvious that he was in cahoots with the Seventh Prince. There is no other reason at all. The information he had was completely obtained through his internal sources. Who else could have that information other than the Seventh Prince himself?

"So, they are in cahoots? How did that happen?"
