Chapter 713: The Calm Before the Slaughter

Varnos looked at Daniel. That lightning shock had just now rattled his entire body so hard that for a moment he felt like he might fall apart.

He let out a sigh and calmed his mind. He had once walked the path of rage before and seen the result.

This wasn’t a battle he could win that way. He didn’t have enough power to defeat the enemy, and he knew that very well.

However, the rage of revenge had blinded him so much that, even though he knew all of this, he could barely control himself in the end. And he was sure that tomorrow, if he went to that ceremony and saw Alaric, the leader of the Goblin Guild, the rage would take over him again.

"If rage takes over you again, you’ll feel that same sensation, like your body might fall apart from the lightning shock," Daniel said, as if he had noticed his worries.

"Haha, well then I guess there’s no need to worry," Varnos said with a smile.

"Father, are you okay now?" Lana asked from the other side. She didn’t know the full story and still couldn’t understand why her father was so angry at the Goblin Guild.

"It’s fine. Let’s get back to the topic. They didn’t even take back the invitation after getting beaten up? They definitely have some plan for us."

"I thought about that too. It’s really strange that the Goblin Guild didn’t withdraw their invitation. They didn’t even file a complaint against you."

"This successor ceremony probably isn’t going to be as simple as we think," Daniel added. He also felt that this successor ceremony was going to be a major problem.

In fact, ever since he was in Dragon Valley and became the Lord of Dragons, his intuition had constantly been warning him that something extremely dangerous was going to happen to him soon.

Was it possible that this Goblin Guild successor ceremony was that very event? But what could possibly happen to him there? Especially with his current power? He doubted anyone in the Goblin Guild could actually threaten him.

So could it be something else? Or maybe they had something that could even threaten him?

A frown appeared on his face. If that was the case, then it seemed he needed to increase his caution and prepare a backup plan.

"Father, how about we don’t go there tomorrow? Wouldn’t that be better?" Lana said after seeing the expressions on both of their faces.

"No, we actually have to go. Besides, if they want to do something, they’ll do it anyway. So it’s better not to act like cowards," Varnos shook his head and rejected the suggestion.

"Ah, but Father, this could be extremely dangerous! What if they’ve planned to kill all of us? What if they attack us? It’s their home ground and we have no advantage there!"

"No need to worry. I doubt they’d dare attack us in front of all the top Awakened in the country. Even if they do, we have a way to escape."

"But it’s still dangerous! Daniel, please say something to him!" Lana shouted in frustration and worry, looking at Daniel.

"I agree with your father. We should go there tomorrow," Daniel, to her surprise, supported her father.

"Both of you? You guys are insane! This is clearly a trap!" Lana couldn’t take it anymore. She sat down on the chair and slammed her fist hard on the table.

The table couldn’t withstand the force of her punch and broke instantly.

"I’m not coming with you tomorrow! If you want to go, then go by yourselves!" Then she stood up and walked toward the door.

But before she could take the last step, she stopped in place and sighed.

No sound came from behind her. Neither of the two men tried to stop her. In fact, maybe it was better if this girl didn’t come. That way she wouldn’t be in danger either.

"No matter what I do, you’re both going there tomorrow, right?" Lana said without turning around.

"That’s right," Varnos answered.

"Ah... fine, I’ll come with you. But if we feel even the slightest danger, we leave immediately." Then she opened the door, left the room, and slammed it shut behind her.

"I’ve never seen this side of her before," Daniel murmured after the girl left.

The Lana he always saw was a strong girl with a charismatic personality and excellent leadership skills, talented, extremely hardworking, and someone who always used her head instead of her heart.

But the girl he just saw seemed intensely emotional, as if she was putting her heart above her reason.

"She’s scared. Exactly like when she lost her mother. Back then she was afraid of losing me too. Over time, seeing that I was always by her side, that fear went away, or at least I thought it did," Varnos sighed.

He knew his daughter better than anyone. Lana presented herself as strong, and she really was strong, but everyone has their weaknesses.

And that applied to his firstborn daughter as well. Deep inside, that girl was a scared little girl, a girl terrified of losing another family member.

Losing her mother when she was still so young had been a massive trauma for her, and it seemed the emotional damage from that still hadn’t healed even now.

Lana was afraid that tomorrow her father would do something stupid at that ceremony that would put his life in danger, or that the Goblin Guild had some hidden plan for him.

Under normal circumstances, there shouldn’t be any worry about something like this, but they all knew what kind of bastards the Goblin Guild were and what they were capable of doing.

Especially the fact that they didn’t even file a complaint against him after what he did, that was even stranger. Those vengeful bastards would never let something like that slide.

The fact that they didn’t complain meant they were planning to take revenge in another way, and that was exactly what Lana was worried about.

"Maybe it really is better if she doesn’t come with us," Daniel thought for a moment and said.

"You feel it too? That something big is going to happen tomorrow?" Varnos paused for a second, then asked in a tired voice.

Daniel nodded in confirmation. He was fairly certain something was going to happen, even though he didn’t know the scale or intensity of it.

"You should spend the rest of the day with your family," the guild leader then looked at him and said this to ask him to leave.

Daniel didn’t say anything, not even goodbye. He just left, gently closed the door behind him, left the guild, and went home.

He spent the rest of the day with his family, just as he had planned.

The guild leader turned off all the lights in his room and sat in complete darkness. His eyes were the only source of light, shining like stars.

In his hand was a photo. Because of the darkness, the photo couldn’t be seen clearly, but it was obvious that it held great importance to this man.

He was touching and caressing the feminine face in the photo with his hands.

"Don’t worry, my love. If they do something stupid tomorrow, they’ll only make me happy... They’ll give me the opportunity I want... And even if it means my death... I will kill every single one of them..."
