Chapter 727: Why Did You Kill James?

The main office of the Everlight Moon Guild.

Inside Varnos’s office, the void suddenly tore open and two men emerged one after the other, falling onto the floor.

Their bodies were soaked in blood, their clothes torn to shreds, their hair disheveled. Pain wasn’t visible on their faces, but their bodies were covered in deep wounds.

It was clear they were in terrible condition. For some reason, their healing power, which should have been among the best, was barely working, to the point that it seemed no stronger than a Rank B’s recovery ability.

"Those cowardly bastards used such a dirty trick," Varnos said with endless anger and fury.

He knew how cowardly and incompetent the Goblin Guild bastards were, but he never expected them to be this spineless, that they would rely on an unknown poison just to defeat them.

"No matter what, this is their victory for now. We need to get this poison out of our bodies as soon as possible," Daniel sighed.

It wasn’t that he wasn’t angry. On the contrary, he was really pissed off that he had fallen for such a cheap trick so stupidly.

But what could he do? What was done was done, and he couldn’t change the past. The best thing they could do right now was get this poison out of their bodies as quickly as possible.

"No matter how hard I tried, it was useless. We need to use one of the treasures that can destroy the poison," Varnos said in an exhausted tone and tried to stand up.

He had tried many methods, but none of them had succeeded in destroying this damn poison inside his body. Even when he managed something, it was only temporary, the poison always came back stronger.

Daniel stood up as well, and both of them left the room and headed toward the elevator. Instead of pressing a button, the guild leader spoke in a loud voice:

"Floor 999."

As soon as those words came out, the elevator suddenly started moving at an incredible speed, as if it wasn’t traveling between floors but shifting between dimensions.

When they reached their destination and the doors opened, what Daniel saw shocked him. The scene in front of him didn’t resemble any other part of the guild building at all.

It looked like an enormous cave with a massive gate serving as its entrance. Varnos walked forward and placed his hand on a hand-shaped slot, causing the gate to open.

Daniel pushed aside his surprise and followed the man inside. The path seemed long, but they arrived much sooner than he expected.

"So many treasures?" In front of him appeared an uncountable number of powerful treasures, all piled on top of each other with no order whatsoever.

Of course, it wasn’t on the level of the treasures in the Pagoda of Eternity, but for their own scale, it was extremely impressive.

Varnos started searching through the treasures. It took him dozens of minutes until he finally found what he was looking for, a green orb.

He sat on the ground and leaned against the cave wall.

"I hope this can help us. If not, we’re screwed," he took a deep breath and placed his palm on the green orb.

Suddenly he felt a massive force rush into his body—not a demonic force, but an extremely pure and clean one. The purest type of energy that could possibly exist.

And it seemed this energy was repulsed by any kind of filth or impurity. As soon as it entered his body, it began cleansing every foreign thing inside him.

A horrific pain flooded his mind. That pure force was using all its power to fight against the poison.

At first, the force seemed superior, but as time passed, the outcome of the battle between them became more and more uncertain.

Varnos’s eyes turned red from the pain. It was as if the poison was trying to inflict so much agony that he would give up on removing it.

"You okay?" Daniel sat beside him when he saw the scene and asked.

"The process isn’t easy."

"Obviously. But we don’t have a choice, right? The Goblin Guild will come here sooner or later and surround us."

"Those cowardly bastards... yeah, they definitely won’t pass up a chance like this to wipe us out. Now they even have an excuse to attack us," Varnos let out a cold snort.

The killing intent in his tone was completely clear. He was extremely angry about this situation, but he couldn’t do anything about it.

All the powerhouses in the country, and even in neighboring countries, probably believed James was killed by Daniel. There was no way to deny it.

And now they were in a full-scale war. Those Goblin Guild bastards would soon surround them with a massive army and their strongest Awakened.

"Even the other major guilds might help them in this," Varnos added in an even colder tone.

The Goblin Guild’s excuse was so strong and solid that there was a high chance even the National Awakened Federation itself might intervene directly in their favor.

They were now no different from public enemies of the country.

"If it weren’t for that array and this poison, I’m sure I could have killed both Jason and Alaric. With their deaths, the Goblin Guild would have suffered a huge loss," Daniel sighed with regret.

Now that things had reached this point, there was no room for restraint. If he could, he would definitely kill them. He had the power to do it too. But because those bastards used such dirty tricks, they not only survived but managed to force them to retreat.

"Why did you kill James?" Varnos suddenly asked. Even though he wanted to kill the Goblin Guild bastards, not in a way that turned the entire country against them.

"It wasn’t me. I didn’t want to kill him. My final attack was in the most limited state possible. Its full power could have killed everyone there, but I have no idea why he died. It really wasn’t my doing," Daniel frowned deeply.

He was certain killing James wasn’t his fault, but if it wasn’t him, then who was it? Everyone had seen that it was his attack...

However, Varnos frowned.

"During the early part of my fight with Alaric, I felt like I was making too many wrong decisions. I got provoked too easily and even used wrong skills and moves. It was only when we entered the void that this feeling disappeared."

"And drinking that wine... why did we trust it so easily? Especially when we knew for sure they had a plan for us in this ceremony?" Varnos pointed out something they had overlooked until now.

"Now that you mention it, I noticed the same thing. I made a lot of wrong decisions too," Daniel frowned as well.

"Could it be...?"

Suddenly both of them realized it. That array didn’t just weaken their physical and spiritual power, it had also weakened their minds. It seemed to have made their decisions and actions no longer fully under their control.

"Damn it!" Feeling that they had been played, they became even more furious.

Where the hell had those bastards gotten such an array from? And how far in advance had they planned this?

Daniel calmed his mind. This wasn’t a plan thrown together at the last minute. It was clearly very carefully prepared.

Hmm?

Suddenly the green orb began to glow, and a moment later, BOOM! It exploded.

"Looks like the detoxification failed."
