Back To The 80s-Chapter 137: Teasing_1
As soon as the train entered T City, Gu Xiaobei began packing up his luggage. It felt good to be heading home.
Lu Zhanguo saw Gu Xiaobei at the exit, lugging two large bags and struggling to make his way out. Yes, struggling, because the bags were so heavy that Gu Xiaobei could barely move. Astonished, he wondered, how much did this girl buy?
He quickly took the two bags from her. They were pretty heavy, each bag weighing about fifty pounds, "What did you buy? They’re so heavy."
"Autumn clothes, winter clothes. If I wasn’t afraid I couldn’t carry them, I would have spent all the money you gave me on my passbook." Gu Xiaobei said with a wave of his arms, feeling exhausted from carrying the bags a short distance.
"Well, next time I’ll accompany you to go shopping," Lu Zhanguo said.
"Hehe, I like that approach. Come here for a kiss." As he said this, Gu Xiaobei grabbed Lu Zhanguo’s arms and jumped at him.
Lu Zhanguo had to carry the bags and pull away the frolicsome girl, "There are people everywhere, stop messing around."
Gu Xiaobei finally let go when he saw the embarrassed expression on Lu Zhanguo’s face, laughing heartily.
Lu Zhanguo felt helpless. It wasn’t until they got into the car that he asked, "How did the talk with the publishing house go?"
"They might not agree with my 30,000 proposal. I left my plan and outline for them to study." Gu Xiaobei said nonchalantly.
30,000? Lu Zhanguo was surprised, this girl sure had guts. He asked with some concern, "What if they hire someone to follow your plan?"
Gu Xiaobei smirked, "I did not reveal my final trick to them. If they don’t hire me, I will find another publishing house. I can’t believe that a talent like myself won’t be acknowledged." Her face was filled with satisfaction.
Lu Zhanguo knew that despite her quirky words and eccentric ideas, she was fearless and strategic when faced with serious matters. He affectionately pinched Gu Xiaobei’s cheek, "Good job, you’re so clever."
"Of course, I told you that you found a treasure." Gu Xiaobei emphasized the words ’found’, as she considered that she was ’found’ by Lu Zhanguo at the hospital.
"Yes, you are a treasure, let’s go have breakfast," Lu Zhanguo said and pinched Gu Xiaobei’s cheek again, it felt smooth and satisfying.
"Let’s eat youtiao," Gu Xiaobei said indifferently. She didn’t mind Lu Zhanguo pinching her cheek and wished he’d do it every day to improve their interactions as a couple.
Lu Zhanguo checked the time and drove towards the city center.
Gu Xiaobei felt extremely "lucky" when she unexpectedly ran into Yuan Tan while having breakfast in T City.
Lu Zhanguo parked the car and came over. Seeing Yuan Tan, he sat down across from Gu Xiaobei and asked, "Have you ordered yet?"
"Not yet." Gu Xiaobei had been engrossed in watching Yuan Tan and had forgotten to order.
Yuan Tan also saw them and came over laughing, "Brother Zhanguo, why are you having breakfast in T City?"
Before Lu Zhanguo could reply, Gu Xiaobei said with a smile, "Lu Zhanguo is on vacation. We’re here to enjoy the city for a couple of days."
Yuan Tan was stunned. Was Gu Xiaobei showing off to her? She sneered in her heart, that was some strategy "Sister-in-law, you’re really something. Brother Zhanguo works so hard normally... he finally got a couple of days off..."
"Oh, I completely forgot about that. I was only thinking about him accompanying me around the city," Gu Xiaobei replied, pretending to be remorseful.
A calculating look flashed in Yuan Tan’s eyes, as she laughed, "Sister-in-law, next time don’t be like this. You need to be considerate of Brother Zhanguo. Also, coming to the city requires spending money, right? Brother Zhanguo’s salary can’t afford your reckless spending."
Gu Xiaobei snorted, "Isn’t the money my man makes meant for me to spend?"
Yuan Tan’s smile had a hint of oddity as she said, "Sister-in-law, Mother Lu likes frugal daughters-in-law, you better be careful."
Upon hearing this, Gu Xiaobei prepared to fight back when Lu Zhanguo came up with his mother’s words to scare her.
However, Lu Zhanguo spoke up to Gu Xiaobei, "Hurry up and eat. After we eat, we have to return to the barracks." He then shot Yuan Tan a cold glance and said, "You better not stir up trouble everywhere, it’s not good for your reputation."
Gu Xiaobei laughed. Her man was indeed efficient, handling the situation with one move.
A frustrated Yuan Tan grabbed a few youtiaos wrapped in greaseproof paper, then said resentfully to Lu Zhanguo, "Brother Zhanguo, I’m leaving first." Then, without even looking at Gu Xiaobei, she turned and stalked off.
The youtiao at this place wasn’t made with gutter oil or puffing agent, but the shop owner’s youtiao darkened as they fried. Gu Xiaobei frowned, "Why are these youtiao so dark?"
"This is fried with 85 flour. The ones you used to eat were fried with 80 flour, which is whiter," Lu Zhanguo explained.
"What’s 80 flour and 85 flour?" Gu Xiaobei only knew about standard flour and high-gluten flour.
"It’s the classification during milling. If there are eighty pounds of flour out of a hundred, it’s called 80 flour. If there are eighty-five pounds, it’s called 85 flour. If there’s more flour, it means that there’s more bran in the flour and it’s not pure, causing the color to darken and lose its chewy texture." Lu Zhanguo had long discovered that Gu Xiaobei knew nothing about the living conditions of this era.
"Oh, then we eat 80 flour at home, right?"
"No, we eat 75 refined flour."
"From now on, let’s switch to 80 flour. Eating more bran is good for the body," Gu Xiaobei said seriously. It was now the affluent who mostly ate refined grains. Many years later, for the sake of health, people would start eating coarse grains again.
Lu Zhanguo thought that Gu Xiaobei was trying to save money and said nothing more.
After breakfast, they both rushed to the unit. On the way, they passed through a town. Gu Xiaobei suggested buying some meat and eggs, "If you’re not transferred, remember to ask for a first-floor apartment when the housing project is ready in the family compound. That way, we can raise a few chickens."
"Okay." Even if he went to H Province for training, it wouldn’t be until the second half of the year.
"But you’re bound to rise step by step and do even better in the future," said Gu Xiaobei, her eyes gleaming with certainty.
"Why?" Lu Zhanguo couldn’t keep up with Gu Xiaobei’s logic.
"Because I bring good luck to my husband, haha." After saying this, Gu Xiaobei burst out laughing at her own cheekiness.
Lu Zhanguo couldn’t help but smile as well. With this girl around, life would never be boring.
The two of them chatted casually and quickly arrived at the family compound.
Sun Aiqin was sunning her son Xiaobao’s bedding in the yard. Seeing Lu Zhanguo getting two large bags out of the car, her eyes widened, and she hurried over with a smile, "Sister-in-law, we haven’t seen you for two days, where have you been?"
"I’ve been visiting relatives." Gu Xiaobei politely brushed her off.
"What’s in these large and small bags?" Sun Aiqin was not easily dismissed and asked directly.
"Clothes, some relatives gave me some clothes." Gu Xiaobei was really annoyed by this woman, but couldn’t voice it directly.
"Sister-in-law, when Jiujiu has outgrown her clothes, save them for my Xiaobao," Sun Aiqin said to Gu Xiaobei after seeing Lu Zhanguo carry the two large bags upstairs.
"Jiujiu is a girl, Xiaobao is a boy, and they are several years apart." Gu Xiaobei stared oddly at Sun Aiqin. Upon closer inspection, she understood why Lu Zhanguo had a stern face and went straight upstairs.
It seemed that Sun Aiqin had just breastfed her child and had come out, with a large milky stain on her chest. She had not put on underwear, and her nipples stood out prominently.
