Chapter 502: Chapter 513: Renting a House_1

Lu Zhanguo remained silent, as Guo Huaqiang insisted on tearing the facade apart. It was a pity that everything he was doing was legitimate and above board, leaving them without any evidence to accuse him with.

Gu Xiaobei could only resort to idle threats. Asking her to take over Guo Huaqiang’s business was unrealistic.

The next morning, Gu Weimin was determined to find a house. He claimed that the sooner they found a place to live, the more at ease they would feel.

Gu Xiaobei frowned, "We should eat breakfast before looking for a house. Let’s go to the small courtyard to eat first."

Gu Weimin declined and said, "No, your mother, Xiao Zhe, and I will just buy some sesame bread on the way. We should hurry and find a house."

Gu Xiaobei nodded and said, "Okay then, I won’t accompany you guys since I have to watch over the two kids."

"No need. You go ahead. Does Zhanguo leave this early every morning?" Asked Gu Weimin while speaking.

"Yes, he leaves before dawn every day."

Gu Weimin replied, "Zhanguo’s work isn’t easy. Try to understand him more, take good care of the kids at home and avoid adding troubles for him."

For a moment, Gu Xiaobei felt delusional. If it weren’t for her belief that Gu Weimin had ulterior motives, she would have believed him to be a benevolent father.

After seeing off Gu Weimin and his wife, Chen Qiumei, and Liao Zhe outside the housing estate, she watched them walk away and suddenly realised she forgot to ask where they were going to find a house.

Gu Weimin glanced back at Gu Xiaobei watching them from afar, and for a brief moment, he wondered if he was being overly harsh as a parent. But he hardened his heart at the thought of his son in prison.

Chen Qiumei grumbled discontentedly all the way, "Why not ask for money? Are we supposed to pay the rent ourselves? We can’t touch those thousand yuan that person gave us years ago. It’s set aside for Xiaodong!"

"Why are you so short-sighted? You just care about money. As soon as you mention it, your daughter could pick a fight with you. She used to be disobedient and thoughtless before marriage. After getting married, she’s still disobedient, but she’s more sensible and miserly now," Gu Weimin couldn’t help but chide.

"So what if we don’t ask? Do you expect her to voluntarily give us ten thousand yuan? Look at her, she’s calculating even the rent, let alone living expenses. How did we raise such an ungrateful child?" Chen Qiumei grumbled angrily.

Gu Weimin shot her a glare, "I always say, your long hair has cut short your wisdom. How did Qiangzi put it? Gu Xiaobei prefers kindness over force. She willingly helps those who treat her well. Are we, her biological parents, expected to treat her badly? Try not to yell at her without reason."

Chen Qiumei continued to mutter under her breath.

As they were walking, Liao Zhe started whining about hunger, so Gu Weimin had to take the child to get breakfast first.

......

When Wen Xiuqing saw Gu Xiaobei arrive alone, without her parents, she asked, "Where are your parents?"

Gu Xiaobei washed her hands, sat down and then responded, "They said they want to settle down in the city and have gone to find a house."

Lu Songyuan, who was shaking as he spooned porridge into his mouth, chimed in after hearing this, "Good, it’s better to live nearby, it’s easier to lend a hand."

Wen Xiuqing did not share this view, but since they were Gu Xiaobei’s parents, she didn’t feel it was her place to comment.

Gu Xiaobei glanced at Bai Xiaolan’s hand and said apologetically, "I’m really sorry. Does it still hurt?" 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂

"It doesn’t hurt anymore. You don’t have to apologize. I admit I have a bad temper. I also clashed with your mother yesterday. As long as you don’t mind, it’s fine." Bai Xiaolan regretted her actions from the day before, considering Gu Xiaobei had taken good care of her own mother when she came over.

Gu Xiaobei simply hummed a response and lowered her head to drink her porridge.

Bai Xiaolan was uncertain as to how to deal with the situation. Did Gu Xiaobei’s hum mean she was upset? She stuck out her tongue and looked at Wen Xiuqing for guidance.

Gu Xiaobei finished her bowl of porridge before looking up to speak to Wen Xiuqing and Bai Xiaolan, "My mother will be staying here more often from now on. She has a bad temper and tends to offend people." She did not know what else to say,

Bai Xiaolan laughed and said, "It’s okay. If she says anything offensive in the future, I will just ignore it."

Gu Xiaobei smiled. In reality, she wanted to say, if things go too far, you can rebuke her, but she absolutely could not voice this idea out loud.

Gu Weimin quickly leased a house and returned just before lunchtime with Chen Qiumei and Liao Zhe, even buying a pound of pork head.

Wen Xiuqing was quite polite, "Why did you buy more meat? We still have some leftover from yesterday."

"It’s not the same. I bought this for the old chief. I remember when I used to serve under the old chief. We could only have meat during the New Year. The chief used to say that whenever he could eat his fill of pork head, his wish would come true." Gu Weimin chuckled as he dangled the pork head in front of Lu Songyuan.

Lu Songyuan smiled heartily and nodded, "Yes, I used to crave pork head back then."

Gu Weimin’s pork head stirred up Lu Songyuan’s memories, and he continued to reminiscence about their days as soldiers throughout lunch.

That afternoon, Gu Weimin and Chen Qiumei moved into their newly rented house.

Before leaving, Gu Xiaobei gave them thirty yuan. She knew that once she started giving them money, there would be no end, so she decided to give less each time to control the frequency.

Gu Weimin didn’t say much and took the thirty yuan before leaving.

Instead, it was Lu Songyuan who limped to the gate to see them off, muttering incessantly, "Come by when you have time. We live close now, so it’s easy to visit each other."

Gu Xiaobei held Xiaopang and Mo Wang’s hands at the gate, watching the three figures walk away. She suddenly felt a sense of helplessness, as if everything she did was wrong.

Bai Xiaolan saw the lost and conflicted look on Gu Xiaobei’s face, and came up to her holding Doudou, asking, "Why are you upset since your parents came?"

Gu Xiaobei forced a smile and said, "It’s nothing. Let me hold Doudou for a while. You can take a rest."

Bai Xiaolan chuckled and said, "This time, my little girl was tough. She hasn’t been uncomfortable yet."

What surprised Gu Xiaobei was that after Gu Weimin moved out, he did not contact her for several days, as if he and his family had never appeared.

This abnormal behavior made Gu Xiaobei’s heart restless and led to many sleepless nights.

"What’s the matter? Are you not feeling well?" Lu Zhanguo, who had been on the verge of falling asleep, was awakened by Gu Xiaobei’s constant tossing and turning.

Gu Xiaobei sat up and lay on Lu Zhanguo’s chest, asking, "What do you think my parents are thinking?"

"You just need to do your duties well. When you have time, bring some things to visit them. Isn’t that good too?" Lu Zhanguo adjusted her posture and comforted.

"Sigh, I guess that’s all we can do. When you have a day off, let’s take Xiaopang and Mo Wang to visit them. If not, it would give rise to gossip." Gu Xiaobei mumbled, her face buried in his chest.

"Don’t think too much about it. Some things will solve themselves eventually. Don’t worry," Lu Zhanguo patted her back reassuringly.
