Wiping away her tears, Qin Li said, "Sister Xiaobei, to be honest, I am getting close to you for a reason: I like Jin Cheng."

Gu Xiaobei held Qin Li’s hand and said, "If this is the reason, I am willing to be used by you."

However, Qin Li sighed, "Since the age of six, when Jin Cheng hit my forehead with a slingshot, I have liked him. Now he has become like this. Even though he is flippant and cynical, he still feels difficult to approach."

Watching the two of them bicker, Wang Chuanjiang perceived this as flirting. Thinking about how Gu Xiaobei was ignoring him only infuriated him more. Just because Jin Cheng came from a prestigious family? What a superficial woman, he thought.

After lunch, Gu Xiaobei did not want to return to the office, so she moved a stool and sat down under the shade of a tree at the factory gate.

Whenever she was alone, she couldn’t help but think of Lu Zhanguo and the story that Qin Li told about Big Brother Jin, which only made her feel more depressed.

"Gu Xiaobei, I want to ask you something." Wang Chuanjiang had appeared in front of her at some point. She was already upset, seeing the impeccably dressed and smoothly combed Wang Chuanjiang only pissed her off more. She responded harshly, "I don’t know."

Wang Chuanjiang was annoyed. "How do you know you don’t know what I’m asking you?"

Gu Xiaobei sighed under her breath: Could this man be any more shameless? She squinted at him and said, "I have never said that. You must be misunderstanding something." After all, she thought, it wasn’t herself who had said that, and she was not blind to have really liked such man.

Wang Chuanjiang made a face as if she had betrayed him and said, "How could you be so heartless." Gu Xiaobei felt like spitting blood, was this a soap opera or what? She turned away, ignoring him.

Wang Chuanjiang continued, "Gu Xiaobei, back in high school, you would often steal food coupons from home for me, if that’s not liking, then what is it?"

"Tsk tsk, Gu Xiaobei, are you blind? Stealing food coupons for this kind of person." The mocking voice chimed in from behind, Gu Xiaobei did not need to turn around to know it was Jin Cheng.

Wang Chuanjiang glanced at Jin Cheng and said, "This is a private matter between Xiaobei and me. You don’t have to interfere."

Jin Cheng feigned innocence and said, "I’m not interfering, I’m just listening. Please continue." Wang Chuanjiang’s face turned a myriad of colours and he said to Gu Xiaobei, "I didn’t expect you to be such a woman." With that, he stormed off.

Gu Xiaobei could only shake her head and laugh at this ridiculous situation. Here she was, being labeled "such a woman". Jin Cheng, ever poking his nose into others’ business, said, "You really did like this kind of guy before?"

"I never liked this kind of guy. I only hope for someone like my husband," Gu Xiaobei stated unequivocally.

Jin Cheng looked at Gu Xiaobei, "Can’t you be a little more discreet, don’t you know what’s it to be shy?" His tone full of disgust.

Gu Xiaobei moved her stool, not bothering with him, and thought to herself, just bear with it for another month and she wouldn’t see these people again.

At the end of the workday, Qin Li came by on her bike again. Gu Xiaobei felt sorry for this girl, who only wanted to take a look at that out-of-tune Jin Cheng, and yet had to take such a roundabout way.

"Sister Xiaobei, how about I treat you to dinner tonight? I got paid," Qin Li proposed cheerfully.

Jin Cheng jumped into the conversation, "Girl, you’re so heartless. I used to buy you so much good food. How can you not invite me to a meal?"

Qin Li glared at him, "I invite you, would you even dare to go?"

Jin Cheng shook his head, "I wouldn’t dare, I’m afraid you’d poison me. Gu Xiaobei is my witness." With that, he walked off without a backward glance.

As Jin Cheng’s disappearing figure receded in the distance, Qin Li’s eyes started to moisten. Gu Xiaobei patted her shoulder and comforted her, "Qin Li, don’t be sad, you know him. That’s just the way he is."

Qin Li blinked back her tears and said, "Sister Xiaobei, I am okay. I have waited for over a decade already, a few more years won’t matter."

Gu Xiaobei nodded, "You’re right, I think sooner or later Jin Cheng will be yours because apart from you, no one will like him."

Qin Li nodded earnestly, "Yes, besides me, who else would like him? Come on, let’s go and eat beef soup in a clay pot." Indicating for Gu Xiaobei to get on the bike.

The weather was already getting a bit hot, the two of them sweated profusely as they ate the hot soup, but thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Seeing the radiant and cheerful Qin Li, Gu Xiaobei felt a little animosity towards Jin Cheng for not cherishing such a wonderful girl.

By the time they finished dinner, it was already getting dark. Seeing that her home was not far from here, Gu Xiaobei decided to walk back and advised Qin Li to bike back home swiftly.

Reluctantly giving in, Qin Li quickly bicycled back home. Strolling back home, Gu Xiaobei pondered, her job application must have been received by the company by now, maybe she would get a reply this weekend.

As she walked, she had the feeling that someone was following her, but when she turned around, she didn’t see anyone. Gu Xiaobei clenched her fists and told herself to remain calm.

Gu Xiaobei was sure it wasn’t a misperception; someone was indeed trailing her. When she would walk faster, the pursuing shadow would accelerate; when she slowed down, the person would likewise slow their pace. Seeing that she was almost at the gate of her residential complex, Gu Xiaobei increased her speed.
