Chapter 521: Chapter 513: Silence_1

Lu Zhanguo had her change shoes first, then the children, changed their clothes, and sat on the sofa before he said, "It’s not clear now, but as long as you’re in the city, don’t go out at night. Avoid places with fewer people, then you should be safe. The fact that they took the trouble to go to Cat Mountain indicates that they don’t dare to act in the city. Once a gunshot sounds, they won’t even be able to escape."

Gu Xiaobei felt a bit relieved. "If you’re not around in the future, I’ll stay with the children in the family courtyard and won’t go anywhere else. It’s fine as long as the children are safe."

Lu Zhanguo patted her head and smiled, "Don’t worry, we’ll be able to catch the bad guy soon. By the way, did you tell anyone that we went to Cat Mountain?"

Gu Xiaobei shook her head, "No, I didn’t even tell Fengmei. I didn’t tell anyone else since it was a family gathering."

Lu Zhanguo nodded. Gu Xiaobei didn’t say anything, so that left Bai Xiaolan. But Bai Xiaolan didn’t have any friends in the city, was heavily pregnant, and never left home. Who could she have told?

Gu Xiaobei watched Xiaopang, who was happily playing with a wilted garland at the coffee table, and suddenly thought of something he had mentioned to Chen Qiumei. Could it be Chen Qiumei? A chill suddenly swept over her back.

"When my mom came a few days ago, Xiaopang told her that he wanted to go to Cat Mountain to see the little rabbits. She even mentioned cats and dogs at that time, do you think she might have told Guo Huaqiang?" Gu Xiaobei said, with both anger and indignation.

Lu Zhanguo frowned, the possibility was high. Looking at Gu Xiaobei’s angry expression, he comforted her, "Well, if Guo Huaqiang really was involved this time, it’s actually a good thing. We can eliminate him once for all and he won’t bother us anymore."

Gu Xiaobei nodded, hoping that all these treacherous people could be caught in on go, so they could have some peace in the coming days.

Lu Zhanguo knew that they were now completely passive. If the enemy did not make a move, they could not find out who it was.

Even if Shen Heng started an investigation, he would only be able to find out who among these people had been in frequent contact recently. Unless they slipped up again, they would need to use bait to lure them into the trap.

Right now, the only thing they could do was to lie low and wait for the opportunity to bait the enemy out when they let their guard down.

Because of Lu Zhanguo’s injury, the family of Gu Xiaobei moved back to the family courtyard.

Gu Xiaobei spent her free time preparing restorative soups for Lu Zhanguo.

Every morning, Xiaopang would snuggle up to Lu Zhanguo, cooing, "Daddy, stay at home every day to play with us, Daddy is the best."

Gu Xiaobei tapped her little nose with her finger and said with a smile, "Isn’t Mommy good? Mommy also plays with you every day, doesn’t she?"

Xiaopang giggled and replied, "Mommy is also good, but Daddy is the best."

"Alright, I’ve been twisted around the finger of a child," Gu Xiaobei said, laughing as she gathered up the dirty clothes on the kang bed to wash.

No sooner had she soaked the clothes in a basin than there was a knock at the door.

Gu Xiaobei thought that quite a few people had come to visit Lu Zhanguo in the past few days, so she didn’t give it much thought. She dried her hands and went to open the door.

She saw the guard at the door with Gu Weimin and Chen Qiumei. She felt some anger building up deep within. In her subconscious, she was fully convinced that Chen Qiumei had told Guo Huaqiang about their trip to Cat Mountain.

After the guard had confirmed the identities of Gu Weimin and Chen Qiumei, he bid Gu Xiaobei goodbye and left. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺

Chen Qiumei said with a discontented face, "It’s really hard to visit you here. I told them I was coming to see my daughter, but they wouldn’t let me in. There was no one stopping me the last time I visited."

Gu Xiaobei knew that the increased security at the sentry post was a result of the incident with Huang Wenying. Previously, registration at the front gate was enough as long as one could clearly state which house they were visiting. But things had changed, and now unfamiliar faces had to be personally escorted to the doorstep for verification.

Gu Xiaobei did not bother to explain. She wanted to directly ask Chen Qiumei if she had been blabbering to Guo Huaqiang, but Lu Zhanguo had repeatedly urged her not to make it obvious that they were suspects.

Chen Qiumei said with a curled lip, "It’s harder to visit you than to enter the Imperial Palace."

Gu Weimin cleared his throat with a cough and said with a smile, "We just went to the small courtyard. When we heard that Zhanguo was injured, we came to take a look. It’s not serious, is it?"

"Quite severe. He can’t even get up from the kang bed," Gu Xiaobei responded noncommittally.

Chen Qiumei exclaimed in surprise, "That’s serious? How did he get injured? Let me take a look." She pushed open the bedroom door as she spoke.

Lu Zhanguo, who was laying on the kang bed, lifted his head to look at Chen Qiumei. "Mom, I’m in so much pain that I can’t get up. I won’t be going out to greet you."

Chen Qiumei quickly waved her hand. "No need, no need. Just stay there. How can his injury be so severe that he doesn’t go to the hospital? Isn’t it hard for Xiaobei to take care of the two children and look after you at home?"

Gu Xiaobei followed her in, her face calm. "Xiaopang and Mo Wang are very well behaved. How can it be difficult to take care of them? You go sit in the living room. Don’t disturb Zhanguo’s rest."

Gu Weimin, blocked by Gu Xiaobei, couldn’t get in and could only call loudly, "Zhanguo, you must take good care of your health. If you’re unable to cope with things at home, just let us know. Your mom and I have a lot of free time now. We can come over and help."

Lu Zhanguo made a grunt in acknowledgment and didn’t say anything else.

As Chen Qiumei backed out, she beckoned to the two children sitting on the kang bed, saying with a beaming smile, "Xiaopang, Mo Wang, come play with Grandma in the living room."

Xiaopang and Mo Wang shook their heads together. They wanted to play with Daddy.

Chen Qiumei exclaimed with pretended annoyance, "These two kids are really strangers."

Gu Weimin and Chen Qiumei settled down on the sofa, with Gu Xiaobei sitting on a stool across from them, silent.

Seeing his daughter’s sullen expression, Gu Weimin seethed, then forcefully swallowed his anger and said, "Xiaobei, you should talk to your mom and me if you have any difficulties. Don’t bear everything alone."

Gu Xiaobei shook her head. "Other than money, there are no difficulties."

Chen Qiumei’s face fell at her words; she couldn’t stand it anymore. "Look at what your child is saying. Are we asking you for money? Do you have to cry poor as soon as you open your mouth?"

Gu Xiaobei was annoyed and silently prayed that Chen Qiumei was once again colluding with outsiders to harm Lu Zhanguo. If that was the case, she would surely sever all ties with them. She was really tired of this daily anxiety.

Gu Weimin and Chen Qiumei didn’t stay long, after sitting for a while, they got up to leave. Chen Qiumei was still thinking about going to Liao Qing’s place to cause some trouble.

After closing the door, Gu Xiaobei kicked the door hard a few times to vent her resentment. After taking a deep breath, she decided to go and wash the clothes.

Inside the room, Lu Zhanguo heard the sound of Gu Xiaobei kicking the door. He chuckled and shook his head, empathizing with Gu Xiaobei’s wish to vent but having nowhere to do so.

At lunchtime, Shen Heng came over. He hadn’t let the guard lead him in, since Lu Zhanguo had informed them early on.

As he wiped the sweat off his forehead on entering, the first words out of his mouth were, "We found the hunting rifle!"
