Back To The 80s-Chapter 60 - 59: Concern_1
Shen Heng changed the topic casually, "You’ve been on vacation for so long, why not go back to Capital City to see your uncle and aunt?"
"No, my leave this time doesn’t permit me to leave the province. I have to be prepared to return to work at all times." Lu Zhanguo said.
The three had dinner together, and Shen Heng excused himself to leave early, having had enough of watching them fuss over each other. However, Lu Zhanguo had at least become more human. 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂
Gu Xiaobei suggested going to a movie. When they arrived at the theater, Xiaobei regretted it. The theater was just a big lecture hall with long rows of benches. What was even more tragic was that they had no choice in the film. The film being shown was a new one called "Tears of the Red Candle". It told the story of a man who bought the female given protagonist with money he made from selling two acres of dry tobacco, but she already had the love of her life and refused to sleep with the man.
Later, the male lead, thinking about the love of his life, whom he couldn’t marry due to his poverty, gave way to the female lead, acknowledging her as his sister so she could be with the one she loved. He gained his own happiness as well.
The movie had Xiaobei sighing, it was much like her own experience, except on her wedding night, she was "devoured" by the wolf beside her, which was truly a tragedy of that era. Thinking about Lu Zhanguo’s lack of moral integrity, she couldn’t help but give him a sideways glare.
Lu Zhanguo was naturally also thinking about how this marriage had come about, and the various ways in which his young wife had initially been unwilling. Now he had been glared at again, he felt a little aggrieved and said quietly: "Even if you have someone in your heart, I won’t let go."
Xiaobei let out a giggle, took his hand and said, "I’m not who I used to be. Now, I just want to spend every day well with you." Lu Zhanguo, still feeling aggrieved, didn’t notice the first half of what Xiaobei said.
The two left the movie theater, night breeze was somewhat chilly, Xiaobei hooked arms with Zhanguo and couldn’t help but ask curiously, "Why did you agree to our marriage?"
Zhanguo thought for a moment then answered, "My mother faked an illness to force me to get married. Plus, I’m not young anymore and you’re quite beautiful, so I agreed."
Xiaobei was speechless: "It takes some guts to tell the truth. So, if I were an ugly, fat woman, you wouldn’t have agreed then." She asked, "If I weren’t beautiful, you wouldn’t have married me, huh?"
Zhanguo felt wronged again, "That’s not it." He mumbled, not knowing what to say. Xiaobei flashed her big white teeth threateningly, "From now on, no matter who’s prettier than me, you must remain unwavering, got it?"
"I won’t look at anyone else." Zhanguo found Xiaobei very cute when she was like this.
The two got home around eleven o’clock, did some simple washing, and went to bed. Before going to sleep, Xiaobei said, "I have to work tomorrow, don’t touch me." Zhanguo was silent, thinking this girl was really weird. She practically threw herself at him and yet she didn’t want him to touch her.
Xiaobei hadn’t been at the company for two days. Everyone, including Ling Yun, heard about her being kidnapped. As soon as Xiaobei entered the office, a crowd surrounded her, even Liu Cuicui, Liu Ying, and Li Hao.
Ling Yun affectionately grabbed Xiaobei and said, "We were so scared. How could you be so unlucky? At least you’re okay now."
Wang Chuanjiang chimed in, "Yeah, Xiaobei, we were so worried about you, we were planning to visit you at your home."
Jin Cheng added from one side, "I didn’t want to visit you, I was afraid your husband would blow my head off with a single gunshot." Wang Chuanjiang immediately deflated and went back to his seat in silence.
Ling Yun, the office gossip queen chimed in: "Yeah, everyone is saying your husband is a gun god, and he’s mentally stable. It’s often said that care causes chaos. Is it true?" Xiaobei, having survived the 21st century in the workplace, felt wildly out of place in this innocent environment. She laughed and said "Isn’t that exaggerating? Isn’t this the result of his daily training?" But her mind was racing. Was Ling Yun trying to drive a wedge between their marriage or did she have other intentions?
Liu Cuicui also spoke up, "Sister Xiaobei, it’s really good to see you’re okay." Xiaobei responded with a sincere smile, "I’m fine. Thank you all for your concern."
Li Hao deeply looked at Xiaobei before leaving. When he heard that her husband was Lu Zhanguo, he was a bit shocked. He had admired Zhanguo when he was a soldier. Although he heard Zhanguo had a prestigious family, he had relied on his own abilities to make a name for himself. Still, he thought it was a waste for Xiaobei to be with such an aloof and cold man.
No sooner had it reached noon, than Qin Li came rushing in. Jin Cheng sneered, "Your little lapdog cares about you the most, she comes every day." Qin Li heard this and kicked him in the shin, causing Jin Cheng to grimace in pain.
She then turned to Xiaobei and said, "Sister Xiaobei, you’re okay, right? I went to your house after work yesterday, but no one was home."
"I’m fine as you can see. Why don’t you come over for dinner tonight?" Xiaobei said with a smile.
Qin Li shook her head: "I can’t, my mom says I have to be home for dinner tonight."
"Going on a blind date?" Xiaobei teased. Nobody noticed Jin Cheng’s face stiffening.
Qin Li pouted, helplessly said, "My mother can’t control my sister, so she tries all sorts of ways to torment me."
Jin Cheng broke in snidely, "Your mother knows no one’s brave enough to marry you, so she’s planning ahead for you."
Qin Li ignored him, continued speaking to Xiaobei, "The day after tomorrow, I’ll come over to eat with you. I’m curious to see what Gun God looks like."
Ling Yun grinned, "Right, I too want to see what Gun God looks like."
Xiaobei happily said, "How about we all come to my house for dinner the day after tomorrow?" She asked Jin Cheng, "Director Jin, are you coming as well?"
"No, I hate soldiers." Jin Cheng said with a look of disgust.
Had she not heard Jin Cheng’s story, Xiaobei would have thought he was just an annoying person. But knowing his story, she understood he was actually avoiding.
Qin Li glared at Jin Cheng, turned back to Xiaobei and said: "Sister Xiaobei, ignore him. It’s enough that I’m going."
Xiaobei then turned to Ling Yun, "Ling, why don’t you come and have dinner at my place with Qin Li tomorrow?"
Ling Yun smiled and agreed, "Sounds good, I’ll tell my son tonight and let him go to his friend’s place after school."
"You could bring him along, it’s not far." Xiaobei suggested.
"I’ll pass, he still has homework to do." Ling Yun refused. Qin Li chatted cheerfully until lunchtime and then ran back to work.
Wang Chuanjiang saw that Xiaobei had only invited him to her dinner, he felt underestimated and looked at Xiaobei fiercely. How had he not noticed before, that Xiaobei with her hair down was so delicately beautiful?
After lunch, Liu Cuicui pulled Xiaobei aside and repaid the money she owed for the two medical visits. Ling Yun initially wanted to give her the money, but Xiaobei didn’t let her. Today when Liu Cuicui insisted on repaying the money, Xiaobei didn’t refuse but accepted it. Liu Cuicui said, "I need to pay you back quickly. My sister is always thinking about this little bit of money!"
Xiaobei was surprised, "Doesn’t she also get a salary, so why does she care about your money?"
Liu Cuicui said helplessly, "She says she wants to go back home and renovate the house."
"That’s a lot of money. The small amount you owe me would only buy a few bricks." Xiaobei felt that rather than having such a sister, it would be better to have none.
