Chapter 601: Chapter 593: Evil Fate_1

Gu Xiaobei quietly sat with Qin Li for a while before leaving the hospital.

At the bike shed, bending over to unlock the bicycle, his heart was still aching for Qin Li and Jin Cheng, a romance that would bring tears to his eyes every time he thought about it. Why couldn’t fate be kinder to them?

With that thought, he stopped unlocking the bike and stood still to calm his emotions.

"Xiangyang, my stomach hurts, can you help me to the little garden over there?" A girlish voice made Gu Xiaobei turn his head involuntarily. He looked towards the pathway not far from the bike shed.

To his surprise, the overly sweet voice came from Jiang Jiayan, with her big pregnant belly, acting coquettishly in front of an impatient Xiangyang.

Jiang Jiahua and He Jing, He Qin’s sister, were also standing nearby. Jiang Jiahua was calm while He Jing had a look of gloating on her face.

Gu Xiaobei was a bit confused about Jiang Jiahua and He Jing’s relationship. He Jing fought with Jiang Jiayan at the Yellow River bank, but they were standing together peacefully now.

"Xiangyang, the baby kicked me; hurry up." Jiang Jiayan struggled to control her temper and spoke in a sweet voice.

He Jing snorted in derision: "Jiang Jiayan, your mother is in the hospital, and you are still acting spoiled here?"

Jiang Jiayan’s face fell. "If it weren’t for you, would my mother be in the hospital? What are you pretending to be a good person for?"

He Jing cackled: "This isn’t my fault. You should blame your brother. He refused to marry me, which angered your mother into hospital."

"Alright, enough talking. Let’s go to the ward," said Jiang Jiahua stony-faced, before walking away.

He Jing casually followed, and Xiangyang left without giving Jiang Jiayan a glance.

Annoyed, Jiang Jiayan stomped her foot and followed them into the impatient ward, her stomach no longer bothering her.

He Jing was introduced to Jiang Jiahua by Jiang’s mother’s friend. The moment Jiang’s mother met He Jing, she straight out rejected her but changed her stance when she learned that He Jing’s father was a military commander.

Jiang Jiahua, however, remained steadfast in his opposition. When Jiang’s mother saw she couldn’t convince him, she pretended to be ill to coerce her son.

He Jing had a strong personality. Initially, she didn’t like Jiang Jiahua either, but after constant nagging by her father, she reluctantly agreed to meet him. To her surprise, Jiang Jiahua was the one who first proposed that they were incompatible.

He Jing slammed the table and vowed, "I will definitely put my name in your household registry."

Moreover, He Jing loved seeing Jiang Jiayan’s horrified expression when she found out that He Jing would be her future sister-in-law. Each time they met and she could upset Jiang Jiayan to the point of almost spitting blood, He Jing would feel exhilarated. 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞

Now that Jiang’s mother was pretending to be ill to push for the marriage, He Jing felt reluctant. She never really intended to marry Jiang Jiahua. She didn’t want to struggle with her mother-in-law and sister-in-law every day after marriage. Afraid that she would lose control of her temper and beat someone up again, she decided to use the opportunity of Jiang’s mother’s "illness" to tell her that she, He Jing, was not interested in her son at all.

Just the thought of Jiang’s mother shivering with anger made He Jing feel incredibly relieved. Who told them to insult her by saying she had a mother who gave birth to her but didn’t raise her!

Once Jiang Jiahua and the others were far enough away, Gu Xiaobei pushed his bike out of the shed. He felt that no matter how he looked at He Jing’s potential marriage to Jiang Jiahua, it seemed destined to be a disaster.

.....

It was again mid-July with a scorching heat, Xiaopang, now four years old, had become a little girl with much eloquence. Wearing a small pair of shorts and a vest due to the heat, she continually negotiated with Gu Xiaobei, "Mama, it’s so hot. Look at me, I’m sweating like crazy, and I’m about to break out in prickly heat. Can I have an ice popsicle?"

At the start of the month, Gu Xiaobei bought a refrigerator but never put any popsicles in it, afraid that Xiaopang would not be able to control herself and would sneak one to eat.

"No, eating too many will give you a stomachache," Gu Xiaobei patiently repeated the words she said every day.

Xiaopang pouted, "Brother is a boy, can he eat them? Then buy one for Brother."

Gu Xiaobei shook her head, "Brother can’t eat them either, he’ll also get a stomachache."

Xiaopang rolled her eyes, "Mama, let’s go to Grandma’s house. I kind of miss Grandma."

Gu Xiaobei saw right through Xiaopang’s ploy. They had just come back from the courtyard in the morning, yet she already missed Grandma.

The two little ones had learned to think for themselves. They wanted to eat popsicles, but they had no money.

The popsicle seller accepted plastic slippers and liquor bottles as barter for popsicles.

Xiaopang and Mo Wang poured away half a bottle of Maotai liquor left by Lu Songyuan, intending to exchange it for popsicles. Fortunately, the front door was locked and they couldn’t get out.

Gu Xiaobei brought the two children back home and punished them by making them stand in a corner. Lu Zhanguo disagreed with this punishment, arguing that the children’s actions showed they could think and cooperate with each other. Above all, this was how Mo Wang should behave like a normal child.

Due to Lu Zhanguo’s indulgence, the matter was soon dropped. Gu Xiaobei decided to keep the children home, so they would not hear the ice-cream vendors and keep thinking about popsicles.

Seeing that no matter how she pled, Mama would not agree, Xiaopang sat down on the sofa in a huff, muttering, "Erhu’s mama buys him a popsicle every day, Jiajia’s mama also buys her a popsicle every day, Xiaoguang’s mama also buys him a popsicle every day..." sitting there listing nearly all the kids in the residential compound.

Gu Xiaobei chose to ignore her.

When Lu Zhanguo arrived home in the evening, he brought several popsicles in his lunchbox. Xiaopang, who already favored her Papa, was now more biased towards him, deciding any secrets she had when she grew up would be shared with Papa.

Watching Xiaopang licking the popsicle wrapper, Gu Xiaobei complained, "You bought her one secretly yesterday, didn’t you? When the three of you returned from your outing, both of them had red tongues. Today, you bought so many again. It’s not good for a girl to eat too many. It’ll be harmful to her health later on. You just spoil them."

Lu Zhanguo picked up a popsicle, unwrapped it, and handed it to Gu Xiaobei. "I spoil all three of you."

"Stop it, don’t sugarcoat your words. I’m serious about what I just said. Xiaopang can only have one every other day, or one every two days. Absolutely no more than that." Gu Xiaobei gave Lu Zhanguo a flirtatious scowl before accepting the popsicle.

Lu Zhanguo nodded, "I will do as you say," but his eyes were full of tenderness as he watched his daughter licking her fingers after finishing her popsicle.

Lu Zhanguo waited until Gu Xiaobei finished her popsicle to say, "Mrs. Qi will be in the province by end of the month."

Gu Xiaobei was glad she had already finished her popsicle, otherwise she might have choked. "Why is she coming again?"

Lu Zhanguo shook his head, "I had some business with Mr. Qi today, and he mentioned it. I suspect it has to do with Qi’s wedding."

"Wow, she is not coming to cause a scene again, is she? If that’s the case, I think He Qin should just give up on Cheng Qijia. It’s better not to marry into a family with that kind of mother-in-law." Gu Xiaobei complained.

"Perhaps she has come around and is here to help Cheng Qijia ask for He Qin’s hand?" Lu Zhanguo tried to put a positive spin on it for Gu Xiaobei.

The truth was indeed similar to what Gu Xiaobei feared, but Bai Mingzhu was not here to make a fuss, she had brought a young girl with her.
