Back To The 80s-Chapter 631: Extra Three: Galsang Flower on the Plateau (Part Three)_1
Lu Weiyi was shocked, "Why do I need to go to the army base? I assure you, I’m not lying."
"This is the Tibetan Area, you can’t stay in a hotel without an ID card. I’ll take you to the army base guest house and get you some money." Chen Gang found his own kindness baffling.
Lu Weiyi was utterly surprised, she couldn’t help but mumble, "How can you trust someone so easily? You’re likely to get scammed."
At this, Chen Gang fell silent and focused on the road ahead.
When Chen Gang had gotten a room for Lu Weiyi at the guest house, he said, "You rest first. I have some change here, take this for meals. After I’m done with my work, I’ll get some money and bring it to you. Don’t wander off at night, the Tibetan area can be dangerous." He took out over a hundred yuan in change from his wallet and handed it to her.
Lu Weiyi thought she would definitely pay him back since it was just a loan, so she accepted the money and asked, "What’s your name?"
"Chen Gang."
Even after Chen Gang left, Lu Weiyi muttered to herself, "Chen Gang...why does that name sound so familiar? Did I hear it somewhere or did one of my elementary school classmates bear that name?"
Lu Weiyi placed her luggage in the room and called Gu Xiaobei from a telephone booth.
As though Gu Xiaobei was waiting in front of the phone, he picked up as soon as it rang.
Lu Weiyi had barely said, "Auntie Gu..."
When Gu Xiaobei, speaking in rapid-fire succession, blurted out, "Yueyue, where are you now? Is everything alright? Why didn’t you call home, your mom is nearly going mad with worry! You didn’t even say a word before leaving, get back here immediately. Your mom and dad have taken a flight to Capital City today."
Lu Weiyi quickly responded, "Auntie Gu, I’m in the Tibetan Area. My phone has no signal and it took me a while to find a telephone booth."
"Tibetan Area? What on earth are you doing there? It’s dangerous for a girl to be alone. Where are you staying? Do you have enough money? Oh right, Chen Gang is also in the Tibetan Area, why don’t you give him a call and ask him to look out for you?" Gu Xiaobei said anxiously. This rascal of a girl had caused her to nearly die of concern with her silence of a few days.
Lu Weiyi was taken aback, it couldn’t possibly be such a coincidence that the Chen Gang Auntie Gu knew was the same Chen Gang she knew, could it?
Without waiting for Lu Weiyi’s response, Gu Xiaobei quickly asked, "Where are you staying? I’ll call Chen Gang and ask him to check up on you."
Lu Weiyi obediently told her the address.
Gu Xiaobei laughed, "Well, that’s a coincidence. Chen Gang’s army base is right there. Don’t go wandering off, I’ll call him and have him visit you soon."
Lu Weiyi found this incredible. The Chen Gang she knew was probably the same Chen Gang that Auntie Gu was speaking of. How odd to meet someone familiar in such a far-off place. 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢
"Auntie Gu, you really don’t have to bother him. I’ll get a ticket back to Capital City tomorrow. Just ask my parents to wait for me," said Lu Weiyi to Gu Xiaobei, in an attempt to dissuade her. She couldn’t let Gu Xiaobei know not only did she meet Chen Gang, but also went through a lot of trouble. After all, she was considered one of the high-achievers in school. How did she manage to be so clueless as soon as she stepped out of campus, nearly losing herself? She couldn’t afford to lose herself.
Gu Xiaobei figured that Lu Weiyi was being shy and reassured her, "It’s no trouble, Chen Gang isn’t a stranger. He’s the third brother often mentioned by Xiaopang and Mo Wang. You’ve actually met him when you were younger. Do you remember him visiting the courtyard with Jiujiu during the New Year’s holiday?"
All Lu Weiyi could do was to sit and wait for Gu Xiaobei to call Chen Gang. She deeply sighed inside. She had no recollection of Chen Gang and Jiujiu. Only after hearing Gu Xiaobei’s explanation, did she vaguely remember such people.
Lu Weiyi stayed at the guest house for three days without sighting Chen Gang. She wondered if he had forgotten her.
Lu Weiyi felt like banging her head against a wall in frustration. Had the altitude sickness scrambled her brain? She hadn’t dared to tell Gu Xiaobei that she had lost her money. Now she was lying in the guest house, waiting for a stranger to lend her money.
After pondering, she couldn’t wait any longer. She decided to swallow her pride and find Chen Gang, she might as well drag Auntie Gu into it as proof.
Once Lu Weiyi had her plan, she put on her down jacket and ran to find Chen Gang.
Upon arriving at Chen Gang’s base, she found out he was shot and was currently being treated at the hospital.
Lu Weiyi was shocked. How could such a big incident happen in just three days? She almost ran out of breath running to the hospital. Since he saved her, it was only right for her to visit him and maybe she could help in some way.
During attempts to curb the civil unrest, Chen Gang had been hit by a stray bullet in the chest. The medical facilities here were inadequate, and proficient surgeons were scarce.
When Lu Weiyi arrived at the hospital, the staff were preparing to transfer Chen Gang to a better hospital.
"I can perform his surgery," Lu Weiyi interjected as she barged into the ward. She had just heard the doctors’ decision outside the room and knew they were in a race against time; any hiccups during the journey could endanger Chen Gang’s life. It was snowing heavily and the road conditions were detrimental, travelling at slow speeds, there was no guarantee they could transport the patient safely and promptly to the better hospital.
Several doctors looked askance at the young woman who had burst into the room, finally, they exchanged glances and said, "Young lady, this is a matter of life and death. We dare not make such a decision. Our best surgeon is studying in Ali, our only option is to send him to a better hospital."
Lu Weiyi looked at the doctors with steadfast determination, "I can do it. We don’t have much time to waste."
Observing the critical state of Chen Gang, the doctors felt they might as well take a gamble and inexplicably nodded their agreement. They instructed the operation theater staff to prepare for surgery.
Lu Weiyi had just graduated from medical school in the summer with a degree in clinical medicine, following which she had interned at a hospital for over four months. This, however, would be her first time leading a surgery.
Lu Weiyi was confident enough to undertake this surgery largely because she had always been diligent in her coursework, ensuring her basics were solid. Secondly, during her internship, she was under the tutelage of the renown surgeon, Cao Yongnian, who had personally guided her through several major surgeries.
After a grueling six-hour surgery, Lu Weiyi breathed a sigh of relief once she had stitched up the final incision. Her forehead was soaked with sweat.
She watched as Chen Gang was wheeled out of the surgery room and then leaned against a wall to rest, feeling her back drenched with sweat.
Doctor Li remarked, "You’re quite skilled. Many promising graduates and experienced doctors are reluctant to work here due to the harsh conditions, leaving us unprofessionals to cope...sigh..." He sighed, commenting on the dismal state of the local healthcare services.
Lu Weiyi smiled and remained silent. She changed out of her surgical clothes and went to check on Chen Gang. She gazed at the still unconscious Chen Gang and muttered to herself, "We’re even now, one rescue apiece."
Seeing Chen Gang’s clothes piled on a nearby chair, she walked over and started to tidy them up. When she picked up his shirt, a photograph fell out of it. The picture was of a serene woman holding a chubby baby.
Lu Weiyi raised an eyebrow and murmured, "Your son is quite handsome, isn’t he?"
Chen Gang’s comrades who crowded at the door of his ward anxiously asked her, "Doctor, Doctor, how is our Deputy Chief Chen?"
"Doctor, can we go in?"
