Be Careful What You Wish For: A Zombie Apocalypse-Chapter 418: What I Needed
Chapter 418: What I Needed
Luca stared out of the window of the lead jeep as it rumbled down the uneven road. Alicia sat in the back seat, going through all the paperwork and occasionally looking over her shoulder at all the supplies in the trunk.
All eleven vehicles were filled to the brim, and it still wasn’t enough for everything at the homestead. It was actually impressive how well the original owners had managed to preserve everything. Pity that they had worked so hard for when the end came, and yet they still died.
Alex, the driver, looked over at him, his eyes narrowing at the side of Luca’s head, but the other man just ignored him. He had enough to deal with without the petty jealousy of the human.
Human?
Since when did he start calling people humans? Shaking his head, he pushed through the pain, trying to remember what he had forgotten.
"I really thought you would be stronger," sneered Alex, finally breaking the silence. "You know, with the way that Alicia was talking about you, you should have been able to take even more supplies. Now we are going to have to go back for a third trip."
"Says the man that couldn’t even bring anything back the first time around," mused Alicia, not bothering to look at her lover. Now that Luca was completely under her control, she didn’t need to worry about the inconsequential people.
Luca alone was worth more than half the base and Sanctuary combined.
Alex’s eyes went wide, but he was smart enough to keep his mouth shut. If he wanted to stay at New Dawn, he needed to fall in line. What happened to Bishop was a warning for anyone who was smart.
"Then I guess we’ll just have to go back tomorrow for what we missed," shrugged Luca like it wasn’t that big of a deal. And it really wasn’t, as far as he was concerned.
"Like it’s that easy," sneered Alex. "Gas isn’t an unlimited resource like it used to be. We can’t just go to the nearest pump and fill the tank again. We’ve already used up half of the tank with these two trips. That means that if we need the Jeeps in the future, we might not be able to use them."
"That sounds like a you problem," replied Luca, the words causing his brow to furrow. Once again, it was like he was copying someone else’s behavior. Never before had he ever heard that expression, nor had he said it.
Or at least he didn’t remember.
Apparently, that was going to be the theme of his life until he could figure things out.
"Tell me about the guys," he said, changing the conversation. Since he was the only one to have forgotten everything, it was probably best if he got up to date on the guys before arriving at the base.
Briefly, Luca glanced in the rearview mirror just in time to see panic on Alicia’s face. When her expression settled, Luca already knew that whatever she was going to say, he wasn’t going to be happy.
"It’s only you and Réne left," she admitted at last. "Dimitri, Ronan, Salvatore, and Désiré all left a few days after the world ended. They decided that they would rather follow some girl than keep the team together."
Luca nodded his head, not commenting on her statement. He really couldn’t see those four up and leaving Réne from some random stranger. But then again, he also knew that they weren’t happy with everything between Réne and Alicia, so it also wasn’t out of the line of possibilities."
"And Max," he said, his voice blank.
"I haven’t seen him in four years. We sent him to get some information on the—" Alicia quickly cut off her sentence, leaving Luca having to fill in the blank. "We think he is dead," she continued at last. "But enough of those men. Let me tell you everything that has happened with the base so far and your role in it."
-----
My skin practically crawling, I let out a huff and stormed out of the house that was annoyingly perfect. I really wanted to hate it, and the fact that I couldn’t was starting to drive me insane. I didn’t want to find a place for myself in this world; I wanted to be apart from everyone and just do my own thing.
But there was some sort of siren’s call drawing me to this base, and I was... worried.
"You okay?" asked Tank, following behind me without me even having to speak.
"Mentally, physically, or emotionally?" I asked, stomping toward the wrought iron gates.
"Any and all?" replied Tank. I could hear the smile in his voice, but I refused to respond. Gods damnit. Maybe I could just burn down the Sanctuary and keep the house for myself...
Yeah, that could work.
"Probably not," I shrugged. Flinging open the gates, my eyes narrowed at the distinct lack of golf carts in front of my house. That fucker took my only means of transportation! Now, if I wanted to go out, I needed to walk.
That wasn’t happening.
Letting out an even bigger huff, I turned around and stomped back through the front lawn and toward the bayou in the backyard. If I was stuck in this house, I might as well find a wife for Tink. That would keep me occupied until the creepy crawlies came.
"I hate bugs," I hissed as I smacked at a mosquito that was trying to use me as a free blood donation. I get that my blood was probably 80% sugar, but it was not in me to give. It was in me to keep me alive, and I wasn’t going to let something with too long of a nose take it from me.
Recognizing that I was in a mood, and instead of trying to force me out of it, Tank just followed quickly behind me. I was almost to the water’s edge when I stopped suddenly.
"Thank you," I whispered to him, knowing that he was still behind me. He had given me exactly what I needed to calm down, and now I was in a much better headspace for what needed to come next.
"I don’t suppose Luca has any flamethrowers in his space... does he?"
