Chapter 436: Some Kid With A God Complex

"Sins can’t lose our memories," grunted Dimitri, turning away from me to look at Luca. "He’s gotta be bullshittin’ you."

Shrugging my shoulders, I went to sit down on the couch. Whether he was bullshitting me or not, the truth was that he either forgot about me or he was just pretending. Either way, it made me feel like shit.

"I’ll let you guys figure it out," I continued. Looking down at my hand, I realized that the lollypop I had taken out was no longer in it, and I let out a huff of frustration. The sugar coffee had officially run its course, and now I was crashing.

I just wanted to go home... only I didn’t know exactly where that was.

Great, now I was in the middle of a pity party for one, and I wasn’t loving that.

Jumping to my feet, I smoothed out my dress and grabbed Teddy out of my space. Apparently, only Teddy was going to be able to fix this problem. "I’m taking a nap," I announced. "You guys are going to talk to Eric and see where we are on the bug spray."

Dimitri cocked his head to the side even as Tank nodded his. "We’re comin’ into de fall. Bugs shouldn’t be dat much of a problem... right?"

"If it was an issue of mosquitoes, I would remind you that they up and disappeared at the same time that Marcus wished them away. The bugs I am talking about seem to have come out of the Country N jungle with us." Cringing just a little, I almost felt guilty about bringing a new type of plague to the humans.

After a moment of silence for those soon to die, I perked right up again. Technically, it wasn’t my fault that the creepy crawlies had hitched a ride on my house. I wasn’t in charge of fate... so whatever was going to happen would happen with or without me.

I just added enough spice and chaos to life to make it worth living.

"Do I want to know?" asked Tank as he walked over to the kitchen and started washing his hands.

"From what I can see, they seem to find a host, lay their eggs inside, and then let the body incubate the babies until they are ready for the human world," I said, burrowing my face into Teddy’s head.

It really was amazing the sense of peace that I got from one stuffed animal. I had been so busy trying to figure everything out that I seemed to have completely forgotten about something that used to be the most important thing in my life.

"I assume that the hosts are dead when this happens?" said Luca, coming over to stand in front of me. His... presence was completely different from what it was a couple of days ago, and I didn’t know how to react to the stranger in front of me.

"Alive," I answered, my face void of emotion. "In fact, you can’t even tell the hosts from an actual human until they up and explode."

"Explode?" blinked Tank as he returned to my side. "If that was the case, then shouldn’t more people be noticing dead bodies all over the place?"

Shaking my head, I thought back to the body in the alley. "The bugs eat everything inside. Blood, muscles, organs, bones, everything is consumed until the only thing left is the person’s skin. When the bugs get too big, then they split the skin and crawl out."

"Fantastic," nodded Tank, looking a little green. "I hate bugs. What kind are we talking about? Beatles? Flies? Worms? Please don’t say worms."

"Worms are useful," I disagreed. "Plus, a lot of things eat worms. No... these are centipedes about this big—" Holding up my hand, I showed them roughly that it was they were the size of my entire hand, from wrist to the tips of my fingers.

"I asked Eric to get some bug spray, but even then, I don’t know if it will actually work. I was going to talk to him today, but then Luca made a wish, and I had to deal with the Wack-a-doodle."

Today really wasn’t my day. "So, I’m going to go home and nap. Maybe I can have a do-over on the day, but until that happens, you guys are going to figure out just what will kill the critters."

"Do they infect those with demon seeds?" asked Dimitri.

"Yes and no," I replied. "Not all of the demon seeds are able to get a strong hold on their meat sacks, so the bugs are able to infect the human part of the body... Then again, who knows what will happen in the future. But if anyone, and I mean Eric, decides to bitch and complain about the bugs, you need to remind him of his friend’s wish."

Dimitri nodded his head while Luca looked more than a little confused. But he was a whole bucket of worms that I wasn’t going to deal with today. "Byes!" I called out as I got up off the couch and left the apartment.

"Go with her," sighed Dimitri, his eyes flashing red as he watched the hunched shoulders of his little kitten disappear from sight. "Don’t let anything happen to her."

"Like I need you to tell me that," sneered Tank, even as he was already halfway out the door. "You deal with the idiot. Figure out how to fix it."

The second he was done speaking, Tank disappeared into the shadows, following behind Hattie silently.

"Like I need you to tell me that," hissed Dimitri, turning his attention to Luca. "I don’t know if you are faking it, or what, but if you don’t get your memories back sooner rather than later, I am going to bang your head against every hard surface I can find in order to knock them back into you. Understand?"

"You know, you would think that you would be a bit more sympathetic about all this," sighed Luca, collapsing into the couch that Hattie had just vacated. "After all these years apart, and the first thing you do is take the side of some kid with a God complex."
