Chapter 43: Chapter 40: Vigilant Eyes

June 17th.

Early in the morning, Qiao Sang arrived at Mingpei Junior High in the company of her mother.

The distribution of school entrance examination rooms was organized by district, with students from every school within the district being randomly assigned to different exam locations.

Qiao Sang was assigned to Class 17 at Mingpei Junior High.

“Did you bring your admission ticket?”

“I did.”

“Did you bring your pens and all that?”

“I did.”

“During the test, first do what you can, and leave the questions you don’t know for last, okay?”

“Got it.”

“You go in now, Mom will come to pick you up when you’re done with the exams,” her mother said softly.

This was the first time her mother had been so gentle since the signature from Sassy Bear was gone, and Qiao Sang was somewhat unaccustomed to it.

“Mom…”

Her mother became even more tender as she asked, “What’s wrong?”

“The time hasn’t come yet; I can’t go in,” Qiao Sang said helplessly.

If possible, she hoped to change this habit of always arriving way too early wherever she went.

Mother: “…”

In one classroom, the invigilators weren’t just two teachers; there were also two pet beasts.

Qiao Sang sat quietly in the sixth seat of the fifth row.

A purple and blue rodent-like pet beast was tapping its antennae on the bodies of the students one by one. Its blue antennae were about seven to eight centimeters long and shaped like antennas, located on its forehead.

As a slightly improving poor student, Qiao Sang had recognized that this pet beast was called the Purple Tile Rat.

Purple Tile Rat, an Electric Type Pet Beast.

It could use the antennae on its forehead to detect any electronic devices nearby.

As the Purple Tile Rat touched each student, upon reaching the third seat of the third row, its antennae suddenly emitted a burst of purple electricity.

“Ah!”

The student in the third seat of the third row cried out uncontrollably as the pen in their right hand seemed to slip and rolled onto the desk.

The electric current was very mild; the student only felt a numbing in their hand and there were no other effects.

“Wa wa.”

Pointing at the student in the third row third seat, the Purple Tile Rat called out.

“Take it out,” said the female teacher who had been sitting on the platform as she rose to stand beside the Purple Tile Rat.

The student’s face turned pale, and they kept their lips tightly sealed without making a move.

“I’ll say it again, take it out,” the teacher repeated.

Under the gaze of the surrounding people and the intimidating look of the female teacher, the student reluctantly parted their hair and took out a button-battery-sized electronic device.

Such products weren’t anything unusual; they were capable of transmitting what choices to make on multiple-choice questions over some distance via thought, but were of no use for filling in blanks or answering essay questions.

This was because only pet beasts with psychic powers had the ability to perform such transmissions.

This indicated that there was another accomplice who had a psychic series pet beast and could see the test papers.

Of course, this accomplice couldn’t possibly be a student.

“Your score for this subject will have to be voided,” the female teacher said unyieldingly after confiscating the device, taking away the student’s exam paper as well.

After the student left in tears, the teacher raised her voice and said, “If anyone has any electronic devices, take them out now. Don’t harbor any hope of luck in this; if the Purple Tile Rat discovers anything, your score can only be voided.”

No one spoke.

Fortunately, as the Purple Tile Rat continued its way, no further abnormalities occurred.

The other pet beast, which looked like an eyeball, divided into five or six copies that floated in different directions around the students as they wrote their exams.

This pet beast, called the Monitor Eye, could share what each split body saw directly with the main body.

It monitored the examination room from all angles, with no blind spots.

It was an essential pet beast for exam invigilation, not only for middle school entrance exams but also for college entrance exams where it could be seen every time.

However, the Monitor Eyes that invigilated college entrance exams had even stronger skills, capable of splitting into at least a dozen copies.

Qiao Sang focused on taking the test, when suddenly one of the Monitor Eyes floated beside her writing hand.

Qiao Sang’s hand trembled involuntarily as she wrote.

Her eyes, with spiral-patterned pupils, were ceaselessly shifting angles, one moment staring at the exam paper, the next at her face.

The monitoring eye left after 5 seconds without anything unusual happening.

Qiao Sang felt that the middle school exams tested not only academic knowledge but also psychological endurance to an extreme degree.

Who wouldn’t be startled if a pet beast shaped like an eyeball suddenly popped up and started staring at them while they were focused on answering questions?!

The train of thought for her answers that had just formed was completely stifled!

Fortunately, after two days of testing in such an environment, Qiao Sang had become numb to it, and she could even answer all the questions calmly with two monitoring eyes appearing to her left and right.

June 19th.

The last day of the cultural examinations for middle school.

After finishing her last exam, Qiao Sang went home and flopped into bed, covering her head and falling asleep.

She had been in a state of constant tension for a while, and once the exams were over and she relaxed, all she wanted to do was to sleep soundly.

But to her surprise, she slept until 7:02 PM.

When Qiao Sang woke up, her head felt much clearer than it did after previous sleeps.

Qiao Sang sat up in bed and looked out of the window.

The sky outside was pitch black, but it still seemed a bit luminous under the moonlight and the city’s bright lights.

The room was dark; she could see from the crack under the door that the living room lights were also off. It was quiet all around, and the Fire-Toothed Dog was not by her side.

Feeling an unexplained emptiness, Qiao Sang got up and looked down at the neighborhood below from beside the window.

At that moment, there were quite a few people downstairs in the neighborhood, with children frolicking, adults in pairs, and the elderly enjoying the cool.

But Qiao Sang immediately recognized three figures at the bottom of the building.

It was her mother, the Fire-Toothed Dog, and Fat Homing Pigeon.

Just watching silently for three minutes, Qiao Sang became hungry…

She remembered that before she went to sleep, she had made plans to eat out with Fang Sisi and the others.

Downstairs in the apartment complex.

“Tooth!”

The Fire-Toothed Dog spotted Qiao Sang immediately, joyfully cried out, and leaped into her arms.

It was still wearing a 15kg Weighted Ring; Qiao Sang’s hand sank, and she caught it steadily.

“Mom, I’m going out for a bit,” Qiao Sang said.

“Okay,” her mother nodded in response.

Qiao Sang had already told her mother she would be going to eat with Fang Sisi before she went to sleep, so her mother didn’t ask anything further.

20 minutes later.

Qiao Sang arrived at the hotpot restaurant they had agreed upon, holding the Fire-Toothed Dog.

“Holy shit!”

“Fire-Toothed Dog!”

Two exclamations erupted from Table 27.

Besides Fang Sisi, Lü Siya was also part of the dinner arrangement with Qiao Sang.

The agreed time was 7 PM, and now more than half an hour late, Fang Sisi and the others had forgotten to question her, as their attention was entirely on the Fire-Toothed Dog.

“You actually contracted a Fire-Toothed Dog!” exclaimed Lü Siya in shock.

“Qiao Sang, that’s not cool, having a Fire-Toothed Dog and showing us only now,” Fang Sisi said.

She looked at the seemingly well-behaved Fire-Toothed Dog, wanting to pet it but not daring to.

This was her first time being so close to a Fire Attribute Beast…

As she ate the thinly sliced meat, Qiao Sang asked, “Siya, it seems like you knew early on that I had awakened?”

Normally, upon seeing a classmate who hadn’t awakened holding a Fire-Toothed Dog, one would ask how the person came to hold a Fire-Toothed Dog, rather than stating straight out that you’ve contracted one.

Immediately, Fang Sisi fell silent.

Meanwhile, Lü Siya glanced at Fang Sisi and bluntly betrayed, “Fang Sisi told me two weeks ago.”

As expected…

Qiao Sang wasn’t surprised; she should have thought of this earlier.

Just like the news of the head teacher’s accident, Fang Sisi had told everyone, trusting her to keep a secret was less realistic than expecting a Fire-Toothed Dog to climb trees.
