Beastmen: She Tames the Land-Chapter 76: Building the first structure (1)
Over the next few days, the pack was in full swing. Mapping the caldera became everyone’s number one priority. Every day, the pack would get up, eat quickly, and then rush off to find a new area of the caldera. Visha would laugh seeing how enthusiastic they were.
Visha didn’t mention building anything just yet. She knew it wasn’t easy to be doing the things they are now.
Every day, there is something new to be found. She herself was enjoying it. It felt like finding treasure every day.
One day, Chi brought back a lumpy tuber called gloomroot. According to the system, the gloomroot should taste like flour. The problem was how to grind it. They didn’t have a stone mill or anything they could use to grind.
Visha used the next best option, which was to roast it.
She found that after roasting it, the skin fell off easily, leaving the white starchy insides. She was able to crumble with her hands. Next, she added water, kneading it until it became a dough.
She hasn’t found salt in the state she knew from her world, so she boiled the salt plant she found during their travels with a small amount of water. In this way, the dough didn’t taste bland.
That day, she made flatbread to eat with the meat.
Chi, who found the gloomroot, happily kicked her legs while she ate.
That night, Visha ate more than ever. The fact that she could eat flour after so long was like a dream to her. That, combined with the fact that she got 20 EXP for making the flatbread.
She wondered briefly what other ways she could make EXP besides system missions.
After a few days of treasure hunting, Visha decided to talk to the pack. She would talk to them about building a house.
Visha cleared her throat to speak. "There’s something I want to ask everyone."
Those having separate conversations stopped talking. The campsite became quiet except for the crackle of the fire.
"We’ve been spending the last few nights under the stars. I know it’s become a norm because of how long we’ve been travelling, but this is our own territory. Are you planning to sleep under the stars forever?"
Her question seemed to catch them off guard. She could see the surprise in their eyes.
"Did you not think about it at all?" She laughed slightly, genuinely amused. "It’s fine. I know everyone’s been busy. But we need to talk about it. We need a roof over our heads before another storm hits."
At the mention of the storm, everyone remembered being stuck in the cave, unable to leave.
Uri took over the conversation, his authority radiating.
This was something Visha noticed the longer they mapped. Uri was gaining an aura of authority. The same with Xeno, though he was more approachable, she noticed the subtle change in them both.
She smiled, watching him take the lead.
"Your priestess is correct," he stated. "This is an oversight on the part of your leaders. We had been so caught up with wanting to scan for danger that we had forgotten that none of us had a hut to live in."
He took out the map, laying it on a flat rock. It showed all the places they had been in the past few days. They gathered around the map, looking for a suitable place.
Xeno pointed a thick finger towards the map. "Here. I think this will work. It’s close to the lake and the irongrove trees. The land between these two places is flat. It’s close to our current hunting grounds, the water is nearby, and it’s easy for the females to go foraging." He looked up, his green eyes meeting Visha’s. "The steam vents are close enough as well."
She blushed slightly. Not because Xeno remembered the hot spring, but because of what he said to her. His naked gaze was enough for her to remember his words.
He turned back to the pack, "Right now, there are ten of us. It won’t stay this way forever. There might be a day when we grow large enough to be considered a tribe. We need a large area from the beginning. This way, we don’t need to think about relocating."
She watched Uri clap Xeno on the shoulder when he finished speaking. She knew he was agreeing with Xeno that this was the best place.
The pack agreed, and they set out the following morning.
The place they wanted to use was a meadow. The wildflowers grew wildly all over. The sight was beautiful, but there were other beautiful sights. This place will be their living space soon.
As they were scoping out their new living area, a debate arose about who would be the first to get their hut.
Cato spoke out, "Priestess, leaders, we feel you should have your hut built first. It should be the biggest with the best view."
After his statement, the affirmative noises from the rest of the pack rang out.
When the noise died down, waiting for their response, Visha answered.
"While I appreciate the thought. We need to build something more important. I enjoy sleeping under the stars with the rest of you. We can build something else first. Something important to our pack. I hope you don’t mind?"
"Priestess Shasha, what’s more important than your hut?" Kit asked.
Visha smiled at Kit, reaching out to tickle his stomach. He giggled happily.
"The most important thing is food," she said. "I want us to build a grain warehouse." She addressed the pack. "We have been finding more and more food. The baskets we have now are limited. We need a place to put these things. Then we can find out uses for the baskets."
"The priestess’s logic is understandable. None of us has built huts before. We can use this to test our skills."
The pack understood immediately. They nodded enthusiastically, ready to try and make a warehouse.
