Chapter 129: Chapter 129: Thunder, Stone, and Poison

Luke ran a hand through his damp hair. "Sure, but that scar-faced man is a high-level Thunder mage, right? He might break your Judgement wards if not pinned down."

She pursed her lips. "Yes, he calls himself Gordon Zhong, but we codenamed him ’Scarface’ in the files. He’s cunning, but we nearly had him. The plan was to corner him inside the barrier, then neutralize him. If not for your sudden intrusion—"

"Again, my bad," Luke conceded, though no trace of regret touched his features. "At least you’re alive."

Lenora let out a huff. "I was in no real danger, just waiting for the perfect moment. Now half my men are off chasing illusions. The others are stuck patching holes in the barrier. This is a fiasco."

Before Luke could respond, footsteps echoed from behind the corner, accompanied by harsh whispers in the gloom.

Here they come.

He and Lenora exchanged glances, nodding in silent agreement. The confrontation was inevitable.

Scarface emerged first, his Thunder constellation swirling at his fists, arcs of electricity crackling in the air.

His minions fanned out behind him, forming a ragged semicircle around the lounge.

"Heh, if it isn’t the little hero and the fancy-schmancy Judgment operative," Scarface taunted, his voice dripping scorn.

"You two cost me a lot of trouble tonight."

Lenora stepped forward, posture rigid, ignoring the tightness in her calves.

"Guo Zhong—Gordon Zhong—we have direct evidence linking you to demon trafficking. You’re under arrest by order of the Judgment Society. Surrender peacefully, or face the consequences."

Gordon Zhong spat, the electricity on his fists intensifying.

"Arrest me? You can’t be serious. I’ve killed plenty of you ’holy enforcers’ in my time." He jerked his chin at Luke. "And who’s the new guy? Another guard dog? Makes no difference."

Luke flashed a cold smile. "I’m no guard dog. I’m just bored, and you look like easy pickings."

That set the criminals bristling.

A short, stocky mage in the group slammed his staff on the floor, conjuring a faint swirl of water. Another flicked sparks from a fingertip.

They’re all awakened to mid- or high-level magic, Luke gauged.

This wouldn’t be a trivial scuffle.

Lenora Quinn’s brow furrowed. She might have staved off the sedation, but her Stone Titan magic was still in partial flux.

She hated admitting it, but Luke’s presence might be the edge they needed. "Luke, can you hold them back while I reactivate the barrier?"

"Sure," he said casually, stepping forward.

Gordon Zhong’s thunder aura surged. "Who do you think you are? You can’t handle—"

But he never finished. Luke’s entire figure blurred with speed, a swirl of violet poison energy trailing him like an afterimage.

He struck one of the henchmen in the solar plexus with a crisp blow.

The man crumpled, eyes rolling back, thick purple haze clinging to his clothes.

Another tried to blindside Luke with a Fireball, but Luke spun, flicking a single finger.

A thread of poison-laced wind whipped out, dispersing the flames midair.

The attacker let out a gargled scream as the residue of the poison gnawed at his nerves.

"How—?!" Gordon Zhong’s eyes widened. "That’s not...any standard element. Poison? Wait—your movements—"

Luke dashed back, landing softly near Lenora again. "Your move, Senior Sister," he teased.

Lenora had already begun weaving a new incantation, drawing her star patterns for Stone Titan illusions.

An earthy glow emanated from her eyes, the same color creeping over the criminals’ feet.

The floor beneath them wavered, solidifying around their ankles like partial stone shackles.

The men tried to blast themselves free. Gordon Zhong roared with thunder energy, sparks arcing off his fists.

"You think a mid-level Stone Titan spell can hold me?!"

A savage punch shattered a chunk of the earthen lock near his foot. Another blow cracked the floor.

But while he was occupied, Lenora lifted her hand toward the ceiling, calling out, "Cyclone Snare!"

Instantly, a swirling column of wind exploded around the criminals, courtesy of Lenora’s second element.

It had the intensity of a sub-High-level gust, enough to disrupt spells and cause them to lose balance.

The stone shackles combined with the roiling wind pinned them in place, preventing them from coordinating an escape.

Gordon Zhong hissed, thunder arcs flailing around him, but he was stuck between petrifying stone at his feet and raging wind at his chest. "Curse you, Lenora Quinn!" he spat. "And your pet freak, too!"

Lenora pressed her advantage, summoning the last vestiges of her Stone Titan power to intensify the petrification.

If I can hold them a few more seconds, she thought, Judgment reinforcements will be here.

Luke, for his part, planted himself near her, scanning for any stragglers who might slip away. One man tried to bolt out a side door, only to face a fresh swirl of purple poison that slammed him into a wall.

"Damn you..." the man groaned, sliding to the ground.

Gordon Zhong’s fists crackled anew. He forced his arms outward, forging a chaotic lightning star pattern.

"You can’t hold me!" he snarled, releasing a surge of thunder that cracked the air like a whip. Electricity tore at the petrifying stone around his calves, carving a shallow crater in the floor.

Lenora’s brow beaded with sweat. She could hold him, but not for long in her half-weakened state. Her eyes darted to Luke. "He’s about to break free. If he does—"

Luke responded instantly. "Got it."

He inhaled, letting his sub-monarch Poison synergy rise to the surface.

A menacing aura flared around him, threads of blackened purple weaving through the air. Then he unleashed it in a single wave.

The toxins hammered Gordon Zhong’s forcibly broken shackles, swirling around his arms and torso in a deadly embrace.

"Poison... You can’t—" Gordon Zhong’s protest died in his throat as the haze invaded his lungs. He coughed violently, lightning star patterns failing to fully form under the relentless assault.

With a last, furious cry, he collapsed to one knee, eyes rolling back.
