Chapter 142: Chapter 142: The Silver Dome Lord

Luke gave a faint nod. "Then I have a task for you. Succeed, and you’ll have that chance." He took on the tone of someone offering a crucial mission.

"You know about the plague-like aura swirling around White Town and drifting this way, right? We need the antidote to that venom."

Wayne, recalling some local lore, blurted, "You mean the Eagle Red Grass that grows in the Xiling region? Our trainers say it purifies certain poisons from demon eagles. But—" He hesitated. "You need a lot?"

"That’s correct," Luke affirmed. "Collecting enough Eagle Red Grass is vital for what’s coming. People in White Town and beyond might need it. Succeed in gathering a good supply, and you’ll get your chance to prove yourself—a real soldier’s role."

Wayne Yates’ heart pounded. He glanced at his loyal eagle, Ash, who nuzzled his cheek.

The notion of flying out into Xiling, braving hazards, made him tremble—but not with fear, with excitement.

"I’ll do it," he said, voice quavering with determination. "Ash and I...we’ll bring back as much grass as you need."

Luke gave him a reassuring pat on the shoulder. "Just be careful. Xiling might be dangerous tonight, with White Devil Eagles stirring around. If you run into trouble, retreat. Understood?"

"Yes, sir!" Wayne saluted, brimming with fervor. He turned to Ash. "No more rabbits for you soon, my friend. Once I succeed, we’ll be official partners in uniform!" He rummaged for his gear, making sure he had a decent portion of supplies, then leaped atop the eagle.

With a whoosh, they took off into the cold night sky, the bird’s wings reflecting the glow of fortress searchlights.

Luke watched him depart with a small smile. What a pure, loyal kid.

As a final safeguard, Luke had quietly placed a protective curse on Wayne—a Soul Devouring Spider that would respond if the boy landed in dire peril.

Now it was time for Luke to shift focus to the larger showdown happening at the fortress walls.

The West Fortress was a massive structure of high stone ramparts and guard towers, each brimming with archers, artillery mages, and defenders.

Its vast outer walls formed a ring that had withstood many demonic invasions through the years. Tonight, though, even these veterans felt pressure from the swarm overhead.

Waves of White Devil Eagles screeched as they dove at the barrier spells the fortress had erected.

At intervals, bright arcs of lightning or lances of flame would spear outward, driving the eagles back.

The defenders manned ballista-like magical turrets, unleashing scorching arrows or wind blades. For a while, neither side gained a decisive advantage.

But high above them all hovered a silhouette of monstrous proportions—a gargantuan Silver Dome Lord, whose wingspan nearly eclipsed the moon.

This monarch-level demon eagle was rumored to command over a dozen commander-level "Four-Clawed Demon Eagles," each leading a sub-swarm of White Devil Eagles.

For now, it simply watched, letting its lesser kin test the fortress’s defenses.

Amid the swirling chaos, a group of powerful figures convened on a watchtower platform.

Zack Reed (the experienced presiding judge), Victor Hale (the formidable councilor who had recently targeted the Totem Serpent), Secretary Yun Feng (chief strategist of the fortress), and others peered at the monstrous avian overhead.

Secretary Yun Feng breathed, "So that must be the fabled Silver Dome Lord...It’s even larger than intelligence suggested." 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

Zack Reed nodded warily. "One glance at that wingspan, and you know we’re dealing with a real monarch—maybe beyond typical monarch standards. The fortress can’t rest on illusions of easy victory."

Victor Hale clenched his fists, arcs of lightning crackling around him. He was a potent thunder mage, known for a direct, aggressive approach. "We can’t wait. If we let it gather all its forces, we’re doomed. We must strike first."

"It has multiple commander-level subordinates," Yun Feng interjected. "We might have to pick them off before tackling the big one. Otherwise, we’ll be swarmed from all sides."

Hale bared his teeth, tossing off his councilor’s robe with an impatient gesture. "Then we do that. I’ll lead the charge. You can follow or step aside—I won’t let this fortress fall!" He mounted his personal mount, a blazing-red avian called Blazing Feather.

With a cry, the bird soared upward, trailing embers. A few of the fortress’s elite mages followed in short order.

Zack Reed sighed. "Victor Hale’s stubborn... but we can’t let him face it alone." He turned to the others. "Secretary Yun Feng, we must coordinate. Some hold off the sub-commanders; others wait to see if the Silver Dome Lord moves."

"Agreed," Yun Feng said. "But watch for the demon’s cunning. A direct assault could be our downfall."

As they readied themselves, a subordinate judge muttered angrily, "We could’ve used Laurence Mann’s super-level Shadow. But that traitor has apparently self-destructed his career. A shame." The man huffed. "And we still have that fiasco with the Totem Serpent to address."

Zack Reed’s gaze flicked to the sky. "At least the serpent’s innocence is becoming clear. If only we had time to clear up the rest before this crisis. Let’s go, we have a fortress to save."

Just as they prepared to take flight, a deep roar—not from the avian horde but from somewhere else—echoed across the mountains.

The White Devil Eagles twitched, some faltering mid-flight, as though an overwhelming presence weighed on them.

The entire fortress front fell eerily silent, human and demon alike momentarily stunned.

"What was that?!" cried a young mage, eyes scanning the darkness.

Everyone froze. Then, from the deep shadows beyond the fortress, a massive silhouette emerged—its length stretching far across the horizon.

Scales glistened in the moonlight, and a hiss rumbled like distant thunder. This was a gigantic serpent—the Totem Serpent—looming at a size that defied belief.

Over a thousand meters from head to tail, it coiled along the ridges. As it rose, the earth seemed to quake, and the air crackled with raw power.

Zack Reed stared, mouth agape. "A...a thousand-meter serpent? The Totem Serpent’s never been that large before!"
