Chapter 144: Chapter 144: The Reign of the Serpent

One of Hale’s companions, a mid-level judge named Alan Mackey offered a weak smile.

"Councilor, from the looks of it, the giant serpent is actually helping us keep the fortress from falling."

He winced, recalling how he had nearly died to the Silver Dome Lord’s aerial assault not long before. "We owe it our gratitude, it seems."

Hale set his jaw tight. The perspective he’d clung to for years—seeing the Totem Serpent as a ticking time bomb—now felt somewhat hollow.

He had always believed that the serpent’s presence endangered the city. Seeing it in action changed something fundamental in his mind. Could the Totem Serpent truly be a guardian, not an overlord?

"It’s not a demon, after all..." Hale murmured under his breath. "We owe it an apology for all our misguided pursuits." Without further words, he bowed his head slightly, acknowledging the serpent’s intervention and his own mistakes.

A thunderous hiss reverberated. The thousand-meter serpent locked its gaze upon the Silver Dome Lord, whose once-proud cry now sounded shrill with panic.

From the fortress ramparts, Luke and the defenders could see the subtle shift in the giant bird’s demeanor—fear replaced the arrogance in its eyes.

"Caw—" The Silver Dome Lord’s voice was piercing, but it did not carry the anger it once did. If an avian cry could convey pleading, this was it.

The gargantuan eagle was evidently aware that the serpent’s power far exceeded anything it had encountered, and it wanted no part in a losing battle.

In the swirl of flames and swirling updrafts from the fortress bonfires, Calvin Moore, an older mage stationed behind the fortress lines, witnessed the event.

He turned to Zack Reed, voice hushed in awe: "Judge, that bird... It’s actually begging for mercy?"

Zack Reed only nodded slowly, heart pounding. "It must sense that the serpent is stronger by far. Perhaps it hopes to avoid certain death."

Alan Mackey, still reeling from injuries, swallowed hard, remembering how he had earlier tried to mount a meager offense.

"After all, if that Serpent could outclass the White Devil Eagles so casually, it may destroy that silver eagle in mere moments."

And indeed, the serpent showed no mercy. Though the Silver Dome Lord let out pained pleas, the serpent advanced with single-minded resolve.

Its colossal body coiled in the air, surpassing the fortress ramparts by hundreds of meters. Keenly aware of the eagle’s deceitful nature, the serpent displayed no hesitation.

It struck, fangs glistening in a purple-green venom, ignoring the eagle’s final tries at contrition.

"Caw—!!" With a final, anguished cry, the Silver Dome Lord’s eyes turned furious, realizing its pleas weren’t working. It unleashed one more destructive wave—a barrage of Feather Blades.

Hundreds of razor-sharp quills glowed with lethal energy, slicing at the serpent’s scaled body.

Some quills embedded between the armor-like scales, but none penetrated deeply enough to harm the serpent’s vital organs.

Another sonic wave battered the serpent’s head, but the effect was minimal—like a gentle breeze against a mountainside.

The Serpent let out a rumbling hiss, shrugging off the attacks. Its venomous fangs glinted in the moonlight, the potent poison swirling with a harsh, acrid shimmer.

In a single fluid movement, it lunged forward, sinking its fangs into the Silver Dome Lord’s wing. The bird’s agonized shriek rang across the fortress. Poison pumped into its veins.

A savage tail-whip followed. The colossal eagle careened downward, smashing into the rocky foothills with an earth-shaking crash.

Dust erupted in massive plumes. Gasps rose from the fortress watchers as they saw the bird’s once-proud plumage now drenched in toxic fluids.

The entire exchange had taken mere seconds, but it spelled doom for the monarch eagle.

For a moment, the Silver Dome Lord tried to re-launch itself, wings flapping feebly.

Yet the potent venom from the serpent’s fangs had ravaged its system, robbing it of speed or agility.

Each time it tried to ascend, the serpent hammered it with unstoppable force, neither giving nor needing mercy.

Those who watched from the walls, including Calvin Moore and Alan Mackey, felt an almost surreal hush.

The eagle’s pitiful final attempts at flight ended with another devastating blow from the serpent’s immense tail, hurling the monarch bird onto a jagged slope.

The giant eagle’s final screech echoed pitifully. Slowly, the once-mighty monarch’s eyes dimmed, turning a dull gray. Its wings slackened, limbs splayed. Then all movement ceased.

"The Silver Dome Lord is dead..." someone on the walls whispered in disbelief. "It was no match at all. The serpent— It’s unstoppable," murmured another.

Victor Hale, from his vantage point, watched as the serpent roared in triumph. Its imposing coils reared up over the eagle’s carcass.

That roar was a declaration, so loud and resonant that it rattled the very stones: Arcadia was under its guardianship, and no demon would find easy pickings here. 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮

Zack Reed stood rigid, heart pounding with mingled relief and awe. "It’s stronger than we knew," he muttered. "A thousand-meter length, unstoppable power... The Totem Serpent has reached new heights indeed."

Off to one side, an almost imperceptible shadow slipped across the foothills near the eagle’s corpse. It was Luke, who had discreetly followed the battle from a safe vantage.

He approached as the serpent coiled in final triumph, whispering quietly, "Hey, big guy, well done. The meat is yours, but I’ll borrow the spirit. That’s our deal, right?" Luke joked softly, half expecting the serpent to ignore him.

But it was more an internal gesture—Luke had come to harvest the Silver Dome Lord’s spirit essence for his own future upgrades.

Sure enough, a swirling black aura emanated from Luke’s Cursed Pool, enveloping the white, glowing spirit that faintly shone around the eagle’s chest. Drifting like a will-o’-the-wisp, the spirit quickly vanished into Luke’s cursed domain. He smirked, feeling his own soul power surge a step closer to a sub-monarch level.
