Chapter 30: Smooth Criminal

"But wait a second, a player might be able to do something, but they might not necessarily be able to teach someone else how to do that same thing."

[*You’re not summoning the players, doofus. You are summoning an LTC entity that has the skills of said player. That LTC entity has been conditioned to be the best teacher too.*]

"Oh, the mighty TT has done it again."

[*Ahem. Flattery will get you everywhere. Keep it up.*]

"I’ve still got about 7 hours left for this session, should I try to summon one?"

[*All your choice. Just remember the terms and conditions I clearly spelled out for you, though*]

"Yeah, yeah.. So, who should I summon? Hmmmm..."

Lukas tapped his fingers on his chin as he considered several players he could pick as his summon for his first skill session.

"Okay, let’s go with — "

"Yeah, that’s a good idea." Lukas smiled as he gave details of the Ego to summon.

The small family sat down for breakfast that day.

Bread rolls, cheese, boiled eggs, with sliced tomatoes and cucumbers were neatly served on the table.

Lukas had helped Javi set up the table after his LTC session for the day.

They were both already dressed to leave the house — Lukas in jean shorts and a blue T-shirt, and Javi in grey tailored lightweight trousers and a white button-down shirt with its sleeves folded.

As they quietly ate their breakfast, Javi broke the silence.

"I will take you to training today."

"Yeah? That’s great, your lectures end early today?

"Yes. And that surprise I told you, I’ll give it to you after your training."

"Hmmmm.. okay, Dad."

"Also.. Ahem.. Someone will be coming with us."

Lukas abruptly stopped in the middle of cutting cheese, as he raised his head to look at Javi. And slowly, he narrowed his eyes — almost comically.

"Who’s that?"

"You’ll see who it is later today. Don’t worry."

"Hmmm.. you’re suspicious. But okay. I guess we’ll see who this mysterious person is," Lukas responded as he flashed a grin and moved his attention back to the cheese.

Or at least he acted like he did.

"I guessed he had already been seeing her for about 4 months by this time."

Anne, the woman Javi was currently dating.

She was someone Javi had introduced to Lukas in the previous life, too. Javi had met her at a business seminar he had attended at the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management.

She was studying to get her MBA at that university and was attending the same seminar.

He was attracted to the way she carried herself and the way she spoke with an air of absolute confidence. He walked up to her after the seminar and started a conversation.

One conversation turned into a coffee date after 2 weeks. And a coffee date was starting to turn into something serious enough to introduce her to Lukas.

In the previous life, however, Lukas wasn’t too thrilled to meet her.

A big part of this was because he was still sulking about being cut from the SV98 team — something he never really got over — when Javi introduced her.

Even after multiple father-son talks between the two, Lukas remained closed off to Anne.

The relationship ended about a couple of months after the first introduction. Javi said they had decided their lives were headed in different directions, but Lukas was aware that he had a hand in it.

At the time, he didn’t feel like he had done anything wrong.

But his father never introduced him to anyone again after Anne, either because he didn’t find anyone else, or he didn’t trust Lukas to be welcoming of his partner anymore.

Lukas’ mother was taboo to bring up.

Even Lukas was unsure whether his mother was alive or dead because Javi never seemed to want to talk about her.

It felt like whenever the topic came up, a weird atmosphere would swallow up whatever room that conversation was taking place in. It wasn’t anger, nor heartbreak. It was closer to fear of the conversation itself.

Javi was hiding something from Lukas, and he took it with him to his grave.

The atmosphere in the dining room at that moment, though, was nothing similar to that.

Javi was beaming with a smile as he ate his breakfast.

Later that day.

Javi’s car was pulling into the parking spot at the Riederwald Academy when he spotted a white BMW 430i Gran Coupe, and a huge smile immediately spread across his face.

Beside the absolutely beautiful car, stood an even more gorgeous woman.

She was about 175cm (5 feet 9 inches) tall and looked in her late 20s, but she was in her mid-30s.

She wore an orange floral print short-sleeve midi dress and black block heels with ankle straps.

She was raven-haired. The deep black hair ran down to her shoulders as she stood with an orange handbag and her sunglasses over her head.

She spotted Javi’s car pull into the spot as she stood upright from slightly leaning on her car, before walking to the spot Javi had parked in.

It seemed like Javi couldn’t wait to turn off the car before he opened the door, just to get a glimpse of her.

"Heyyy, Annie, I hope I didn’t make you wait too long?" Javi asked as he stepped out of the car at an impressive speed and mindlessly slammed the door behind him — his eyes completely fixated on her.

"Hey Javi, no, my final seminar today ended earlier than scheduled, so I decided to come earlier. I haven’t been here for long, you don’t have to worry," She replied as they hugged for a while.

"How are you doing, Annie?" He asked as he gave her a light peck.

"I’m fine, dear. Although I feel like you calling me Annie there was just you paraphrasing the joke you’ve told every time we met," She replied as she returned the favour.

"Hahaha.. I’m sorry, I just can’t stop myself. Blame Michael," Javi said as he and Anna laughed, all in their own world.

"Ahem!"

The sound of Lukas clearing his throat as loudly as he could from the other side of the car was what ended the lovey-dovey session.

"Hello, I’m guessing you’re Lukas. I’m Anne Becker, your dad’s friend. I have heard so much about you from him. It’s nice to finally meet you," Anne introduced herself as she stretched her hands towards Lukas, who was now walking to the side of the car they stood at.

"Yes, Ms. Becker, I’m Lukas. It’s nice to finally meet you, too, although Dad wouldn’t tell me anything no matter how much I asked," Lukas replied as he shook her hand briefly.

"What Ms. Becker? Please call me Anne, although Javi insists on calling me Annie."

She then turned around to Javi, who was standing behind her.

"I see I’m not important enough to talk about," she said as she made a face that looked like she was about to burst into tears — Lulas couldn’t see her.

"No! It’s not that! I wanted to surprise him!"

"He doesn’t look too surprised."

"Yeah, because he already guessed I was introducing him to a female friend."

"You know you can just say ’boyfriend’ and ’girlfriend’, right? I know what relationships are. I’m not a kid," Lukas said to the couple in front of him, tiptoeing around their relationship status.

"You’re not?" Javi asked as he tilted his head to the side with an exaggerated motion just to get his point across.

"You still look like one, though," he added.

"Looks can be deceiving."

"Ohh.. Javi, you never told me your son was this wise," Anne interrupted the father-son semi-bickering.

"Yeah, he has a smart mouth today."

"Haaa.. I don’t have time for this. It’s almost training time. Anne, it’s nice to meet you again. You guys have a nice time. Dad, please don’t forget to come pick me up in 2 hours."

"Don’t worry, we’ll be staying here to watch you train. And I still haven’t given you the surprise yet."

"Huh? I already met her, though. Isn’t that the surprise?"

"Yeah, that was a surprise, but there’s something more."

"What’s it?"

"It won’t be a surprise if I tell you now, would it?"

"Dad! How many times will you use that sentence? C’mon, please tell me."

"You’ll find out after training."

"You’re teasing him too much," Anne added.

"Yes, please tell him that."

"Just trust me, Luke, you’re gonna love it."

"Okay, I’ll wait."

As he spoke with Javi and Anne, several other U17 players were arriving for the training.

"I have to go now. Byeee!" Lukas waved them goodbye as he jogged over to Christian and Philip, who were waiting for him by the gate.

"I wonder what he’s being so secretive about," he thought.

"Hey, Luke, who was that beside your dad? Is that your mom?" Philip asked as they walked into the hallway leading to the locker room.

"She’s my dad’s girlfriend."

"They look really good together."

"I hope it all works out this time," Lukas thought as they walked into the locker room.
