Chapter 52: New Environment

"Turn around, we are heading back," Alex suddenly said to the driver.

They were on their way to the city but just as Alex suddenly spoke, the driver was forced to abruptly step on the break causing the two of them to hit their heads on each of the things before them.

"What the hell?" Alex grunted as he rubbed his forehead.

"I’m sorry," the driver apologized immediately while rubbing his own forehead as well.

"I said take me back to the house," Alex repeated.

"Master said I shouldn’t stop the car no matter what until we get to Meteor City," the driver replied respectively.

"I don’t care what he said, just take me back. If you are scared about the punishment, I’ll take it on your behalf," Alex said but the driver was adamant on his decision to not turn back.

While they were still arguing, the driver got a sudden call on his phone and he picked it up immediately. Hearing what the person on the other line said, he gasped in shock and tears began to fill his eyes.

Seeing this, Alex frowned. "What is it?" He asked him.

"They said some group of people dressed in white broke in and killed both the master and Mikasa," the driver replied and then began to cry.

"I said it," Alex mumbled and collapsed on the seat. This was why he wanted to return, he had this feeling that something bad was going to happen — if only he had listened to his instinct, who knows, he might have been able to save them.

"Let’s head back this minute," he said to the driver who began to hesitate again. "Do you want to get me upset?" He asked him, sounding irritated.

"I can’t. It’s dangerous going back home," the driver responded.

"I don’t care!" Alex grunted and slammed his fist on the seat. "I don’t care if it’s dangerous!"

"Do you want Master’s sacrifice to be a waste?" The driver asked him. "He’s dead so why do you want to return and make all his efforts a waste?" He asked him.

Alex sighed and looked outside the window. He wanted to so much go back but the driver was right, he couldn’t go back no matter how much he wanted to.

"Let us continue the journey, please," the driver pleaded.

"Fine," Alex replied and closed his eyes as the driver started the engine again.

The journey was mostly quiet with the driver telling him the names of all the towns they passed through. At night, they would stop on the road, and sleep in the car as instructed by Damon to the driver, and early the next morning, they would take off again.

-----------

The journey lasted for five days and during this period, they did the same thing — journey during the day, sleep on the road at night, the next day, buy food, and then continue the journey again. Eventually, they arrived at the large school where Damon had registered Alex’s name and stopped by the entrance gate.

After coming down from the car, Alex gazed at the school gate and sighed again. He didn’t like the idea of going to another school but as it was right now, he didn’t have any other choice.

"Let us go inside," the driver said to him and began to head toward the gate. Alex followed behind and when they got to the gate, it was opened by the security man there.

"Who are you people?" He asked them.

"We are here to see the owner of the school of the school. Please let us in," the driver replied with a calm voice though he didn’t like the way the security man was sounding rude.

"Show me evidence," the security man demanded with a harsh tone.

"We don’t have any evidence but if we see the owner of the school, he’ll be able to testify," the driver replied.

"I can see you people aren’t ready. Besides, you both look so dirty and smelly, I doubt the Dean will be willing to see you," the security man said and made to close the gate after insulting the driver and Alex.

"If you don’t want this gate broken down, let us pass through," Alex deciding to join in the convo, calmly said while holding the gate.

"What’s with you, kid?" The security man questioned and tried to close the gate but Alex was far stronger than him, it was something undeniable. ’Such raw strength’ he thought to himself.

"I believe I’ve made myself clear already," Alex mumbled.

"I won’t let you pass through the gate without evidence," the security man insisted.

’We should not use force, it’s our first day here so it is not right," the driver turned and said to Alex, trying to calm him down.

"If you are fine with the insults, I’m not! Not when Damon risked his life to get me here," Alex said to the driver who lowered his head in sadness.

"Hold on," the security man said and released the gate. "Do you mean Damon Griffin?" He asked Alex who scoffed at him.

"Yes, yes! That’s him, my Master," the driver replied.

"Please, come in," the security man said in a low tone.

"Hmph!" Alex muttered as he walked through the gate, into the school.

"Thank you," the driver said to the security man and followed after Alex.

"Let me take you to his office," the security man offered and led the two of them towards the school buildings.

The school was larger than Nightfall Academy and unlike the old school with lots of bushy paths and trees, this one was properly kept and designed beautifully. The buildings had different shapes but one single color — grey and had black tints all over them to add to their beauty. There were few trees around so that the grounds wouldn’t be littered with too many leaves and Alex kind of liked the environment though he kept a straight face as yet walked toward the Dean’s building which was on the other side of the school. The school had five sides, the side with all the classes, the teachers’ quarters, the students’ quarters, the training side, another place prohibited from students, and lastly, the Dean’s quarter which they were headed to. The Dean’s quarter was close to the prohibited area and was farther from the other areas so they had to walk for a while before getting to his office.

"Aren’t we there yet?" Alex asked the security man, ignoring the students who were occupied by staring at them.

"We will soon be there, don’t worry," the security man answered him.

"Hmmm," Alex sighed and didn’t say another word again.

Just as the middle-aged man said, they soon got to the Dean’s office and knocked on the door. A male voice answered from the inside and they opened the door and went in.

"Sir, these people are here to see you," the security man said to the old man at the table.

"Who are they?" The old man asked him, adjusting his eyeglasses and staring at Alex in particular.

"They were sent by Mister Damon Griffin," the security man replied.

"Ah, I see," the old man mumbled. "You can leave, I’ll handle the rest myself," he said to the security man who bowed and left after glancing at Alex.

"Sir, my Master sent us to you on account of what you both talked about. This is his nephew, Alex Griffin," the driver said to the old man.

After sizing Alex, the old man cleared his throat and brought out a piece of paper. "This is the school’s application form. Fill it out and submit it back to me," he said to Alex while handing the paper to him.

Alex collected the paper and the pen the man was holding and began to feel it, after writing his name and age, he came to the place where he was supposed to write his ability and halted. Noticing the reluctance, the driver moved closer to him.

"What is it?" He whispered to him.

"I’m supposed to write my ability here but the hell am I supposed to?" Alex whispered back.

"You can put whatever ability you want, it shouldn’t matter," the old man replied to him. Alex and the driver gazed at the man in surprise, how was he able to hear what they were saying?

"I’ve got quite a good set of ears," the old man replied as if understanding what was on their mind.

Alex glanced at the driver and quietly fixed something on the space there. After that, he submitted the paper back to the man who collected it and swept his gaze at it before putting it inside a locker.

The man then typed something on the machine by his side and asked Alex to come over. "Place your thumb here," he said to him and Alex did as told.

He watched the machine and saw how a little amount of his blood was sucked into it, then after a while, a red card with his name, class, age, and sex came out of the machine. The old man prepared the card, fixed everything fixable, and then handed it over to Alex.

"That’s your ID, hold it well, and don’t ever lose it!" He said to him while handing the card over to him.

"Sure," Alex replied and collected the card from him.

"Everything will be made ready for you by the end of the day but before that, you should head over to your class," the old man said to Alex who glanced down at himself.

"I look dirty," he mumbled to the old man.

"Do you want to serve some punishment on the first day of your school?" The old man asked him.

"I think you should just get into class like this," the driver whispered to him.

"But I look dirty," Alex grunted.

"The old man doesn’t look the kind to take nonsense from anyone. You just have to bear with him," the driver said.

"Where is the class!" Alex asked the old man while looking a bit pissed off.

"Go find out yourself," the old man replied and bent down to continue what he was reading before they came in.

Alex sighed and walked out of the class followed by the driver. As soon as they left, the old man looked up from the book and adjusted his glasses while staring at the door, his face was replaced by a deep scowl.
