Betrayed by Blood
Chapter 161
"Okay, that will be all for today. Have them report back to Nathan, and he will tell me what’s going on. I want proper coverage on this. Failure is not an option, and I will not tolerate it," Cain’s voice boomed through the room. He had just concluded a two-hour meeting with the high-ranking wolves. Merging the two packs wasn’t easy, and it was already testing the waters.
"You’re dismissed," he announced, then walked over to the alcohol cabinet, taking out a bottle of scotch and poured it for himself. After talking and practically teaching grown men what to do, he was on the brink of insanity.
The men had now begun to filter out of the office, all of them off to do as he ordered. Cain shut his eyes, exhaling as he tried to get through to Avery through the mind link. He loved listening to her thoughts, but today, on the other hand, he couldn’t get through to her.
His eyes snapped open, a small smirk coming to rest on his face. She had already figured out how to pull up the mind link.
He walked over towards the window, hoping to catch her outside in the garden, but of course, she wasn’t there. Just as he grabbed his phone, ready to call her, a knock on the door had him pausing.
"Come in," he called out.
The door swung open, and Lydia stepped in.
Cain’s gaze immediately snapped towards the calendar on the wall. It had been a week since she left and was just returning now.
"You’re back already?" he asked.
Lydia nodded, "There wasn’t more to do there anymore. I got everything you need," she replied, stepping forward, her gaze flickering to the glass of scotch Cain had in his hands. freewebnøvel.com
"You want it?" Cain asked, and she nodded. He passed it to her, watching as she gulped the whole thing in one go.
"Oh. It must be really bad if you’re drinking," he said, taking the cup from her. "Want more?" he asked, but she shook her head, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand while Cain poured himself another drink.
"Cain, you have no idea how many degenerates there are in this world. I’ve met so many disgusting assholes in my life, but Dean Hugh is truly the worst of them all," she groaned.
Cain arched an eyebrow. "Dean Hugh?"
Lydia huffed, "Avery’s cousin. He took a liking to me immediately I arrived. I went in like I was injured. I had to cut myself—" she showed her palm, which of course was now healed. "He was concerned because a frail little thing like me shouldn’t be hurt or lost," Lydia sneered, her blood boiled as she remembered how he had treated her like a dummy. Like she was a woman without brains. A lost little thing. Oh, it infuriated Lydia... even more when he’d speak of her like she wasn’t present. A truly cocky bastard.
"And?"
Lydia exhaled sharply. "He wanted to help me. I thought it would be difficult, but sex is truly all that big buffoon thinks of. He sees a woman and can’t wait to get his cock wet, and even more when the said woman tells him she’s pure. He took me in like a lost little puppy, and all I needed to do was bat my eyelashes. A real fool."
Cain’s grip tightened around his glass.
"I played along," Lydia continued, crossing her arms. "Pretended to be impressed by his stories, laughed at his jokes. And when I asked about Avery..." she trailed off, her jaw clenching. "He didn’t even hesitate... he told me everything. How she was only a dirty whore who thought a woman could lead a pack. How stupid she was thinking she could ever go against his father. How his father got rid of her and maintained his position as pack alpha. How smart and intelligent his father is."
Cain’s jaw clenched, his teeth grinding so hard Lydia could hear it. "A dirty whore?" His voice was lethal.
Lydia scoffed. "That’s what they all call her, Cain. To them, Avery was never an alpha’s daughter. She was a nuisance, a mistake. A girl who thought she had power but was never meant to have any."
"But that’s not all." Lydia stepped closer, her expression hard. "Do you want to know the worst part?"
Cain didn’t answer. He didn’t need to. The look in his eyes told her everything. He already knew there was worse, and he was barely holding himself together.
Lydia inhaled sharply. "They didn’t just look down on her. They broke her, Cain. Hurt her in ways she will never speak of. And one of them..." she paused, fists clenched at her sides. "One of them tried to force themselves on her."
Cain stilled.
Lydia barely had time to react before...
CRASH!
The glass in Cain’s grip shattered, the broken pieces embedding into his palm. Blood dripped onto the floor, but he didn’t so much as flinch. His entire body vibrated with
rage.
"Who?" His voice was deadly calm.
Lydia swallowed hard. "She accused...It was Dean she accused. According to him, he never tried anything of that sort, and that only proved how mentally unstable she was to lead a pack. It made the pack members understand that she was worthless and couldn’t lead."
"Her own cousin tried to rape her?" Cain asked, his voice low.
"He did, and from what I saw, he only backed off after she poured hot wax on him. He still has the scars and is still bitter about it. He says she went ballistic that night and threw the wax at him, but he insists he did nothing to her."
Cain exhaled slowly, but it did nothing to ease the storm brewing in his chest.
"Lucas gathered information when he went to check on them, didn’t he?" He asked.
Lydia nodded.
"Who gave him those details?"
"The pack members," Lydia replied, "Which means Hugh never even tried to hide it. He let that information spread. He let his people believe Avery was worthless, so much so that even the lowest-ranked wolves in that pack knew her suffering. It was never a secret."
Cain turned towards the window, his jaw clenched hard. He had castigated her so harshly. Treated her worse without knowing her, and for that, he would never forgive himself, but this... what he just learned... Hugh and his entire family will not just go free.
Lydia stepped forward, "I heard from some of the maids. Hugh is planning to bet his daughter to a very powerful alpha. One that resides across the region from theirs." Slowly Cain turned towards her, his eyebrows arched.
"Hugh plans to do that?" He asked, and she nodded.
"There’s only one Alpha that’s as powerful and resides across the region of theirs, and that’s you. I think Hugh has plans to offer Jasmine as a mate for you," she said.
A slow smirk made its way to Cain’s lips. "Well, isn’t that just perfect?" He murmured.
"So what’s your plan, Alpha?" Lydia asked.
"Since Hugh is taking the time out of his busy schedule to offer me his daughter. Why don’t I be the responsible one and go visit my father-in-law?"
