Chapter 50: Chapter 50

Betrayed by Blood~

A growl reached her ears just before she was thrown to the ground. She gasped as the sharp claws of a wolf dug into her shoulders harshly. Its eyes filled with only one hatred she recognized instantly.

Martha.

Avery froze, her chest pounding hard as Martha’s wolf loomed over her, its eyes dark with malice. She could feel the heat of its breath on her neck, every muscle in her body tensed with fear. She knew she couldn’t fight back—she was too weak, too alone. She was truly done for.

"Weak fucking bitch. You can’t run now, can you?" Martha sneered.

Avery trembled, she squeezed her eyes shut, hoping, praying for some miracle to save her from this situation she had somehow landed herself in.

Suddenly, a voice broke the silence.

"Martha," Kendra’s voice came through the mind-link, her voice filled with panic. "I saw Alpha Cain. He’s coming."

Martha froze, her wolf’s gaze never leaving Avery, but the momentary hesitation was enough. The other two women turned sharply, eyes scanning the woods.

"Is he alone?" Martha growled under her breath, her grip tightening on Avery’s neck as if to remind her who was in charge.

"No," Kendra replied, her voice tight with fear. "He doesn’t see us yet. But he’s close."

Avery’s blood ran cold at their words, her body trembling. Martha’s gaze snapped back to Avery, the hatred in her eyes clear. "Stay quiet. If you speak, I won’t hesitate to drag that runt girl you share a room with and slaughter her. I promise you no one will care about a runt. Do you understand?" She sneered. It wasn’t news that Avery was fond of Millie, especially since she was always helping the other with her chores whenever she could. After all, Millie did help her to be free from the dungeon.

Avery’s mind raced, but she didn’t dare answer. She could only nod, every fiber of her being screaming for help, but she didn’t dare make a sound. She could hear Cain’s footsteps now, unmistakable in the silence of the forest.

Without warning, Avery felt the weight lift from her shoulders. Martha had quickly shifted back into her human self. Avery felt a tug—Martha was dragging her, trying to pull her behind the trees where they wouldn’t be so exposed, her grip tightening to force Avery into silence. Avery’s heart pounded hard in her chest, fear coursing through her veins. She didn’t want to be dragged behind the trees. Her fate would be sealed then. She had to do something. Just as Martha moved to cover Avery’s mouth, she shrieked, a sharp noise escaping her lips.

Cain froze, his eyes scanning the woods, every muscle in his body ready to fight, especially after what had just happened with the three masked assassins.

Martha stiffened when she laid eyes on Cain. He still hadn’t seen them yet thanks to thee scent blockers they used, but it wouldn’t take him long. One wrong turn and they’ll be done for.

She pushed Avery forward, making the other tremble. Avery stumbled forward, she snapped her head backward just in time to see Martha, Anna, and Kendra stepping behind the trees. Martha’s gaze locked on hers, heavy as she made the deadly motion, swiping her thumb against her neck. Avery swallowed hard at it, her pulse hammering in her ears, and she could feel her knees weaken.

"Avery?" Cain’s voice rang out, deep and hoarse, his gaze heavy on Avery, almost like he couldn’t believe his eyes. "What the hell are you?" He didn’t get to complete his words.

Avery’s body trembled, and without thinking, she latched onto his arm, her small frame shaking in fear, relief coursing through her veins like a dam.

His brows furrowed at her reaction. He looked down at her, confused. Her face was pale, her eyes wide with distress. He reached out, gently pulling her closer to him, his hand firmly holding her.

From where they stood, hidden in the trees, Kendra’s eyes burned with rage. She clenched her fists at her sides, her teeth grinding in frustration. She could barely stand to see Avery so close to Cain. Every inch of her boiled with anger, her body practically vibrating with the urge to step out and rip Avery away from him. But before Kendra could move, Carol’s firm hand gripped her wrist, pulling her back firmly.

"We’ll deal with her later," Carol muttered coldly.

"What do you think you’re doing out here? Do you realize how dangerous it is? What do you think this is? A fucking joke?" Cain demanded, his voice sharp and rough. It was already late, the sky had turned dark.

Avery swallowed hard, her chest tightening. "I didn’t know you were here," she whispered, her voice shaky. But even as the words left her mouth, she knew they sounded weak. "I was worried about you," she finally admitted, her words trembling on her tongue.

Cain scoffed, running his fingers through his hair. "What could you possibly be worried about?"

"I told you what I heard," Avery stammered, struggling to explain. "You wouldn’t listen, but I heard it. The men were going to—"

"Kill me? Is that it? Tell me, what would you have done in that case? What did you plan on doing once you got in here?" He snapped, and she shrank back into herself, unable to reply. Her words caught in her throat. She had no answer, no plan to offer. She looked down. "I... I don’t know," she whispered.

"I’ll go back," she murmured quietly.

Cain stared at her for a few seconds longer and then let out a tired sigh. "Stay right by my side. I have a deer to hunt, and I refuse to be held back because of you."

Avery nodded hastily, attaching herself to his side instantly. Cain turned to leave but paused. Not realizing he’d stopped, Avery bumped into his back.

Cain turned around, his heavy gaze settling on her. His eyes briefly flicked to her neck. There was something in his gaze that Avery couldn’t quite place.

He stepped closer to her and slowly leaned down, his nose brushing against her neck slightly, and she shivered, her eyes shutting immediately as he took in her scent, sniffing her intensely. Avery stiffened, knowing what he was doing. He was scenting her, making sure she’d smell only like him.

Cain pulled back after a minute, his eyes as dark as the night. "Now you smell like me," he said, his voice low. "No alpha will dare hurt you now, even if you stray away from me."
