Betrayed by My Trash Husband, Surrender Myself to the Devil-Chapter 27: This Uncomfortable Feeling (II)
Ray POV
"Eh? Oak-Sinar Hospital? Are you sure, Sir?" Troy checked on me through the rearview mirror, and I shot a glare back at him through the same mirror, which made him quickly turn his eyes back to the road.
"Yes," I replied curtly. "I have something to do there."
"Sir, the meeting with Thomas Page is important," Troy reminded me, as he knew all my schedules. "Is it really wise to do this?"
Of course, I knew that my meeting with the young billionaire Thomas Page was important. He was planning a multi-million dollar investment in a new business that required my approval because his late father entrusted all of his funds to Gatlin Gold in his inheritance will.
On top of that, I also had a good relationship with Thomas and basically all of the high-profile clients of Gatlin Gold.
So, as a man of logic, I should have known which one took priority.
But my mind was haunted by the image of Claudia crying and begging in front of me, as if her life was truly on the line.
It was too disturbing and stirred this uncomfortable feeling, like a small bug slowly gnawing at my conscience—if I even had one.
There was no way I could focus on my meeting with Thomas Page with this uncomfortable insect inside me. So I had to kill it first by addressing the issue.
"I’ll call Jane to shift the meeting to after lunch instead," I assured him. "Now turn right and stop asking questions. I need to deal with something first so I can focus on work."
Troy checked on me through the rearview mirror for the second time before nodding. "Understood, Sir."
**
I had paid a large sum to make sure that those two girls were placed in the VIP ward with the best treatment possible at this hospital.
But I understood Claudia’s distress. No matter the amount of care and security the hospital could provide, as long as Clarissa was still in charge of watching over them, the risk of something bad happening to her daughter was too high.
Then again, would that crazy woman do anything heinous even if I didn’t tell her to do anything yet?
The answer would be... yes.
Because even I had no idea that she would push the girls down the stairs. When she called me before, she simply said that she had a great idea on how to frame Claudia until she had no way out.
I had to admit that her method was crazy, even by my standards.
There were two cops standing guard at the door because the children were key witnesses in this whole situation.
But since there was no set timeline for when the girls would wake up, all they could do was wait.
The cops gave me a knowing nod and opened the door for me.
The moment I stepped into the room, I saw a woman with long brown hair wearing a rather scantily clad dress for autumn.
She had a strong perfume that filled the air, and as a man with a medical degree, I noticed she had recently gotten a few Botox injections on her face.
Nevertheless, it didn’t really affect her beauty. While Claudia had a more down-to-earth and soft beauty, Clarissa was the more in-your-face type of woman.
I had to say these half-sisters occupied my mind equally for two completely different reasons.
Claudia brought up all the hatred in my heart, making it almost impossible for me to move on even after a decade.
Clarissa was crazy in a way that suggested we should have hit it off immediately, because everyone called me insane and heartless anyway, so we shouldn’t be too different.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t feel anything for Clarissa—not even disgust or hatred. But she was interesting, just like a special lab rat I wanted to observe continuously, as all of her actions truly exceeded my expectations.
Clarissa maintained her calm and innocent image until I closed the door.
Then she switched her persona immediately and rushed to hug me.
"Darling! Oh, you’re finally here to meet me, right?" Clarissa said as she opened her arms for a big hug.
Before she could hug me, I grabbed her by the face and shoved her aside.
"Aw! Awiee! Darling, why are you so mean to me? I’ve missed you so much..." Clarissa pouted. "I even did what you told me last night. I need a reward for my hard work."
"I’ll transfer you some money for your work last night," I said as I took out my handkerchief and wiped the hand that touched her face just now.
I walked toward the girls’ beds, checking on their condition.
"That’s not what I want. Miles has given me enough money anyway," Clarissa sulked as she followed behind me. "What I want is you. You know that already..."
...
I ignored her completely and checked on Aurora and Lara’s conditions. After making sure they were stable, I finally turned to face Clarissa.
She was sulking "cutely," or at least she tried to. I couldn’t tell the difference the way a normal person might, since I felt nothing, and her cute sulk looked grotesque in my eyes.
Still, I had studied male behavior patterns and knew that most men like Miles loved to see a woman sulk like her.
Claudia never sulked in front of me, even when we dated back then. And I guessed she also never sulked in front of Miles, hence his cheating.
I had no intention of talking to Clarissa any longer. She was interesting and useful, but not interesting enough for me to ignore this gnawing feeling inside my chest.
I never knew Claudia’s tears could have such a profound effect on me, like a bug I had to squash immediately so I could focus on my meeting with Thomas Page later.
"I’ll change Aurora’s ward. You don’t have to watch over her anymore," I said coldly.
"Huh?" Clarissa stopped sulking. Instead, she stared at me as if she had just heard something utterly ridiculous. "What are you talking about, honey darling? Isn’t it better for me to watch over Claudia’s little bitchling?"
