Chapter 12: Ways to end a marriage (2)
"She’s not here to fight with you," said Xavier.
Selene became concerned when Xavier only mentioned that she didn’t want to fight. It left the thought that he might want to fight.
"I am not going to discuss my wife with you or any other man," Gabriel said, needing Xavier out of the way. "I mean no trouble with you but you are getting involved in my marriage."
"Our marriage is over. I want a divorce and I shall soon send the request for it. I informed you about this before I left last night," Selene said, knowing Gabriel didn’t take it seriously.
Gabriel wasn’t ready to let go of Selene. The plan was to let her wander the night and return to her place in the morning. "I am not ready for a divorce. We need to send Lord Blackthorn off and speak alone."
Selene looked ahead at Cassandra coming toward them. It was never going to be just the two of them anymore. "I am serious about the divorce and there is nothing to be said that can change my mind. You knew what Elsie meant to me yet you killed her without speaking to me first."
"She harmed my woman," Gabriel replied.
Selene smiled but there was a tightness to it from her forcing it. "You already have your woman so what do you need me for? You wish to marry her so I am giving you the freedom to do so without asking the king to have a second wife. I have come for what belongs to me."
"I am not divorcing you," Gabriel said, refusing to let her have her way.
"Well, there goes the plan to be civil. There are other ways to end a marriage when the husband doesn’t want to agree to it. The other option would be to make her a widow for a moment,’ Xavier suggested, preferring this option.
"Lord Blackthorn," Gabriel said, trying not to raise his voice. "What have you come for? She has returned so you may go."
"Unfortunately, I can’t. I must see that no harm comes to her and seeing that you are having trouble with your temper, I know what shall come if I leave. There’s a hierarchy in this world," Xavier reminded Gabriel. "You may feel on top of the world because of the current praises but you will always be far below a pureblood. Isn’t that why you married her?"
Gabriel wondered how much Selene told Xavier about their arrangement. "I am not divorcing her."
"So," Xavier said, looking down at the nails he was able to grow quickly. "A widow, it is." fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm
"Gabriel!" Cassandra clung to his arm. She placed herself in front of him so he wouldn’t be harmed by Xavier.
Xavier didn’t find the sight endearing. Instead, he liked that it was a two-for-one.
Selene touched Xavier’s hand to calm him. Now was not the time for a fight and she didn’t want Xavier to steal the pleasure of killing Gabriel. "I have only come for my belongings, not to spill any blood."
"But, I find it so tempting," Xavier said, his smile ticking off the man in front of him.
"Gabriel, we should let the lady grab her things. Some time away should clear her head and let her see that this is her home," Cassandra said, trying to be the voice of reason. "I’m sure you will not harm her. You only wish to speak."
"Lord Blackthorn," Cassandra turned to face Xavier. "I shall stay here with you while they speak."
"Where do you get off telling anyone what to do?" Xavier asked, uninterested in what the little pest had to suggest. "I am not letting her out of my sight around you fools. Either get out of the way or I shall move you. I welcome you to pick the latter."
Gabriel pushed Cassandra out of the way. "I am not afraid of you, Lord Blackthorn. Your title means nothing here in my home."
Gabriel was willing to take the fight. Selene was still his and she would be his forever. He never planned to let go of her.
"Right now, it is still my home so I am within my right to welcome a guest inside. I know where my things are," Selene told Xavier. If she stood around any longer waiting for them to agree, the sun would start to burn her skin.
Selene started to walk around Gabriel and when he reached for her, Xavier was quick to grab Grabiel’s hand.
Gabriel ignored the pain of Xavier’s nails sinking into his skin. He was too focused on Selene. "You will abandon me like this?"
"Haven’t you been paying attention? You abandoned me first. Agnes," Selene called to her maid. She needed help to pull her things out.
Xavier released Gabriel and took out a handkerchief to wipe the blood from his nails as he followed Selene inside. He would like to kill Gabriel now but was curious about Selene’s plans.
"Gabriel, you are hurt," Cassandra said, worried about the state of his hand. "Why is Lord Blackthorn here? Are they...lovers?"
Gabriel hated hearing from someone else what he was thinking about the pair. Selene couldn’t be with Xavier. She couldn’t leave him. He was never ready to let go of her.
Gabriel followed the pair since it was his home so they couldn’t do as they liked.
Cassandra was hot on Gabriel’s trail to make sure he wasn’t hurt again. If Selene was going to bring a man like Lord Blackthorn then Cassandra didn’t want Selene to leave forever.
"Selene!" Gabriel’s voice echoed throughout the home.
Selene paid no attention to Gabriel and kept going to her things. She opened her bedroom door and by some luck, found the room just as she left it. Gabriel had not rummaged through it or destroyed her things which meant he was counting on her to be back.
"It is all in here, Milady," Agnes said, going to the trunk they already packed.
"You will need to gather your things quickly as well," Selene told Agnes.
"I will buy what she will need. It is best to leave," Xavier said, keeping an eye on the man storming toward them. This little show was certainly worth staying awake.
"You will regret this, Selene. He will throw you to the side when he grows bored of you like he does with everyone else and then, what will you have?" Gabriel asked. He still believed that Selene was going to regret leaving and come back to him. He was all she had to stay protected.
What did Selene know about Xavier to think she could trust him?
Gabriel dug his nails into the palm of his hand. He wanted to trap Selene here but Lord Blackthorn presented an issue. He still had a request to be fulfilled by the king which was going to be for getting the blessing to take a second wife but now, it had to be to keep his first wife.
To everyone’s surprise, Gabriel left without saying anything else. He didn’t need to fight so much since this wasn’t the end of his marriage.
When Selene came crawling back, Gabriel would be ready to have her regret the mess she made today.
