Betrayed By The Hero, Loved By The Lord-Chapter 312: Reunited (3)
Chapter 312: Reunited (3)
"Had I missed the signs that you and Xavier were once close? How did the two of you fall in love?" Seraphina asked.
Seraphina got a chance to pull Selene away while the men spoke to each other.
"Xavier says we were friends in his eyes, and I failed to write to him when we moved away for that little time. Truthfully, Xavier made an offer that I leave Gabriel and be protected by him. I accepted it after I lost Elsie," Selene shared the truth.
"You two did not fall in love and get married? How many know of this?" Seraphina asked, surprised by this revelation.
"You and Agnes are the only ones who know, as far as I am concerned. It did not start as many expected, but I like where we are now. Truthfully, my marriage to Gabriel wasn’t one out of love. I needed to be protected, and he seemed to be a good choice then," said Selene.
"Oh," Seraphina said, looking away from Selene. "You did so much to survive. When I heard that you had gotten married, I thought you had fallen in love. I would have never thought of any of this."
"It was what I needed to do to survive then. The Harrisons were after everything left to me, and the court was of no use since they viewed me as a traitor. I don’t blame you for anything, nor am I upset," Selene said before her mother’s tears started.
Selene continued, "Like you, I thought the Harrisons would be there in my time of need. They showed their real faces when there was money to be gained. I’m sorry if it disappoints you to hear how my marriage started."
"How could I be disappointed? You did what you needed to survive. If you weren’t happy, you did a good job at hiding it. There is so much that I have missed," Seraphina said.
"And there is so much that we will do to make up for it. I am sad that you must leave, but I know this isn’t goodbye for us. We will see each other as often as we can, and when we do, we will have many stories to share. This is a new beginning," said Selene.
"You are right," Seraphina said, seeing it differently now. "Plenty of our enemies are gone. Your father and I will get to walk around over there. This cave has been a good home for us, but I wish to see the sunlight. To walk around and feel the wind in my hair. I cannot go on like this."
Seraphina missed the home she once lived in with the garden she adored, as well as the memories she made there.
"I did not realise how much I missed it until now," said Seraphina.
"Perhaps I could convince Xavier to build a family home where we can meet far out of this town. It will always be there and filled with new memories each time we meet," Selene suggested.
"I would love that. I don’t think you need to ask since it is likely that he has overheard us. He has been sneaking glances at you from the moment we left. Your father’s plans to scare him are not working," Seraphina chuckled.
"I don’t think there is anything in this world to scare Xavier," Selene said.
Seraphina knew that wasn’t true. Losing Selene would scare Xavier. Seraphina could tell just by how much Xavier watched Selene.
Seraphina kept this to herself since speaking of losing Selene would dampen the mood.
"I like him," Seraphina confessed, keeping a close eye on Xavier. "I don’t remember him ever being someone rude to look down on us. I had very few talks with him, but he responded respectfully. Now, he appears to be a well-mannered man. You went to the right man for help."
"Do the Blackthorns treat you well?" Seraphina asked.
"Josephine and Orlork have welcomed me. Xavier’s aunt Camilla is easy to speak to. I think she is misunderstood and angry because she had her fangs taken from her. Nathaniel has voiced that he doesn’t like me," Selene shared.
"Of course he doesn’t. I never understood what Josephine saw in him, but they somehow fell in love with each other. I cannot judge since many thought my choice of your father wasn’t good. Who else would have prepared for death knowing only I would live?" Seraphina asked, doubting she would find another man like Thomas.
Seraphina held Selene’s hand. "You possess the power to heal others. It is a rare talent among an already rare talent. I am happy to know that your secret didn’t fall into the wrong hands. Keep it to yourself so no one tries to hunt you down."
"I don’t intend to let it get out. Many of the holy weapons used by humans might have been collected and stored in the palace. Hopefully, most of them will be destroyed. Xavier places guards around me so it would be no easy way to hurt me with one of those weapons," said Selene.
"Good. Purebloods can be such greedy creatures. Despite there not being holy weapons around to harm them, they would want to own you. I don’t agree with a lot of what the Everharts do, but they were right to hide," Seraphina said, worried about Selene’s future.
"If anyone manages to harm me with a holy weapon, I am quite certain that Xavier wouldn’t let them live much longer. I don’t travel without Lucas if Xavier is not around, so he would kill that person. I am fine," Selene assured her mother.
"I know that you are fine. As your mother, I cannot help worrying. There is danger all around. What are the chances that the future will be far more pleasant than this?" Seraphina wondered out loud.
"I will be positive and say that it gets better. We cannot always be negative, since it will bring bad things to us. The future will be good for us. It will take time for us to adjust, but it will get better. I think that father should stop," Selene said, watching as her father failed to scare Xavier.
If anything, Thomas was humouring Xavier with his threats.
"Xavier isn’t afraid of grandfather, Orlork, or Nathaniel, so I don’t think my father has a chance to scare him. Xavier doesn’t have it in him to pretend to be afraid. Should we end this?" Selene asked, turning to her mother.
"No," Seraphina answered. "Let the men talk while we eat most of the food. At some point, they will tire themselves out."
"They are all purebloods," Selene pointed out. "They won’t be tired so easily."
