Betrothed To An Alpha? I Don't Think So!-Chapter 108: You’ll Freeze Death
Everyone blinked, staring at Zayne who was too close to Gallo. And Gallo was still as a statue, eyes dilated.
But that wasn’t what caught them off guard, it was Zayne. His eyes were a dark golden, and the fingers he had wrapped around Gallo’s throat clawed.
How...?
Were they seeing things?
Luca grew still.
Gallow dropped to the floor on both knees, bleeding from the neck.
Zayne slowly turned towards Evelyn. But she took a step back.
"Evelyn—" She took another step back as if to move away from him.
A frown emerged on his face and he quickly lowered his gaze, for the first time realizing that he’d almost shifted. He hadn’t meant to, blinded only by rage that this man was just about to kill the woman he loved.
Panic settled slowly in his chest and he lifted his head, locking eyes with her. "Evelyn, listen, I can explain myself—"
She shook her head at him. Even her face had gone pale, her lips parted. But it seemed as if she didn’t know what to say, or was rather too afraid of him to even open her mouth and utter a word.
She was afraid of him.
Evelyn who’d never been afraid of him was. And he could smell it from her. Her fear. And it hurts.
Why?
"What are...what are you?" Luca asked, stuttering.
Zayne glanced at him. He couldn’t care less about the man on the other side. His entire priority was Evelyn, but she was backing away from him, still doing so.
"Evelyn, please stop."
She shook her head at him, eyes dull as if she had gone into shock.
"Evelyn, you’ve got to stop. You’re getting too close to the edge!" He stormed after her, to grab and yank her away from the edge of the bridge. But the very second he touched her, she slapped his hands off, rapidly shaking her head.
"D-don’t, don’t touch me," she stammered, trembling with a kind of fear he’d never seen with her.
Just because of what he was? What was even so scary about him? Why would she look at him that way and...
"I’m not going to hurt you," he growled, his tone animalistic. "I’ve never had any intention to do so! Why are you so afraid of me? I’m not going to hurt you, Evelyn."
He stepped up to her, to grab her hand, but Evelyn backed away all too fast, hitting the edge of the bridge.
Her scream sounded as she fell over, dropping into the sea beneath, but he was quick to grab her hand, catching her.
She stared down at the water beneath her, chest pounding, her heart rate rising. Swimming was something she’d never learnt. If she fell into this water, she was bound to drown. She might never make it out.
Her lashes flickered, the sudden hot liquid building and clouding her vision.
Surely she wasn’t going to die like this.
"I don’t want to die..." she mumbled to herself, sniffling.
"Evelyn, look at me!" Zayne yelled out. "I’m going to pull you up, but I need you to look at me. Do not let go!"
Evelyn slowly turned her head up to meet his gaze. "Zayne...?"
His eyes were back to normal. Even his claws were gone and he looked nothing less than the human she’d always known him to look like.
"You don’t need to be scared of me," he said to her. "Actually, I won’t show you this side of myself if that’s what I have to do. I don’t want you to be afraid of me, so I’ll be as weak as need be if that will make me more human for you. Please," he was begging.
More human...for me...?
She stared at him, slowly blinking.
He wasn’t human. Zayne Mancini wasn’t human and it all just suddenly made sense. The one time he’d asked her what she would do if she found out he wasn’t human? His shot wound healed in less than a week. His eyes that changed colours a lot of times and she’d stand wondering if she was seeing things.
This explained all of it.
But if he wasn’t human, what was he? Who was he? What kind of a creature was he? One that can stay human when they want...
Her lashes flickered.
"Evelyn!"
Zayne yelled her name.
"I love you."
Her pupils dilated. "Huh...?" She was barely audible.
"I love you," he said. "And I’m sorry I didn’t say it to you long before. I’m sorry that it’s my fault you ended up in this situation. I’m sorry that I didn’t keep you with me at all costs, that I didn’t make you stay. I’m sorry that I gave up on you too easily even though I knew you were hurting. So, please, don’t let go of me. Don’t look at me with those eyes. You can’t understand how it hurts to see the woman I love look at me with fear in her eyes, even though I have not a single intention of hurting her. Please. Just hold on to me. I’ll explain and I-ll—"
"You bastard!!!!"
The sudden sound of a running car grabbed both his, Lucas and Evelyn’s attention. He glanced over to find Valerio stepping down from his car.
Wait what?
What was he doing here?
Fuck! Fuck!
Before he could react, Valerio fired three shots that directly hit him on the side of his stomach. And with every strength he had, he hauled Evelyn up, yanking her over and into the bridge.
However, in the midst of it, he himself knocked off, falling toward the sea beneath.
"ZAYNE!!!" Evelyn screamed his name, grabbing the edge of the bridge and almost falling over herself if not for Luca who was quick to grab hold of her.
"Let go of me!" She snapped at him. "He fell over! He fell over! Let go of me!"
But Luca wouldn’t.
"You’ll freeze to death," he breathed out, trying to make her understand. "The snow is close to falling, the sea is extremely cold. You’ll die, Evelyn. You will if you go after him."
