Chapter 81: Exhausting Day

Lara’s POV

It was a long and exhausting day, and all I could think about was calling Philip when I got home. I slept soundly last night because I knew that keeping up with my day job was essential to my long-term success at work. Even though I had no intention of marrying a man who would take care of me, it was my future that I was concerned about. Decisions were going to be based on love. If I were to fall in love with Philip, everything would be perfect. I couldn’t contain my grin. In the beginning, it wasn’t like this

When I got home at six o’clock in the morning, the first thing I did was turn on my phone. As I changed into a t-shirt and slid into bed, I read a few missed calls and texts. I only cared about Philip. When the phone finally rang, I gave a hushed welcome. He was also eager to talk to me and inquired as to whether the weekend had been rescheduled or not. After I didn’t respond to him last night, he inquired about my well-being and I explained that I had a minor cold and had slept it away. Tell me what you have planned for me on Saturday, and I’ll tell you what I’m looking forward to most about it. Despite my pleas, Philip laughed at me and scowled at me. Sex was only one aspect of what was going on here. I hoped it would be the same when I met her in person. When I decided to stay up late and talk to him, I knew it would be worth it in the long run. The weekend, which had seemed like an eternity away, would finally arrive on Friday, as it always did. In two nights, I’d be circling his tongue and cock, milking him for all he had to give.

Even though we only had a few hours of sleep left when we ended the call, I would have called the next morning if I were someone else. It was understandable that I had accrued some sick and vacation time, but it wasn’t me. After dragging myself out of bed, I showered and changed into a red dress and high heels before heading to work. I was looking forward to a bright and cheery day today. Whatever happened, I was going to be thinking about Philip and what was going to happen in the next few hours, no matter what. In comparison to the previous two days, Brent and I had made significant progress the night before, and today would be a breeze. Even though he appeared to be cheerful, I could tell he was exhausted from the amount of coffee he drank and the dark circles under his eyes. In addition to that, it’s stunning.

There was no way I was going to come to work after five o’clock tonight, so I sat down at my desk and finished up the last of the weekend’s tasks.

At lunch with friends, I kept my mouth shut as they discussed their upcoming dates and weekend plans. When no one knew about the phone job, how could I explain meeting a client? Since last week, they’ve been pestering me about my new haircut, color, manicure, and pedicure, as well as my slightly altered style. After all, given my age and the fact that such things are common for women, I simply explained that I had a great job and was looking to change things up for fun. This was partially correct. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺

Even though the afternoon had dragged on by the time I returned, I had made it. Finally, it was time to return to the comforts of home. In order to be fully prepared for tomorrow, I was determined to get some rest tonight. Neither Philip nor I will answer any phone calls while we’re in bed. Instead, I stood in front of the mirror for a few minutes, wondering if he had any interest in me at all. Clients never saw my face, preferring to create the glamorous woman of their dreams based on what I knew about their tastes. Because I wanted Philip to be surprised, I kept a lot of things a secret from him. When he first saw me, I wanted him to have a natural reaction. Even though I knew I was attractive, I noticed every flaw as I examined myself more closely than I should have. I gained a few pounds as a result of the long hours spent sitting at my desk at work, as well as the tempting meals available to me nearby. That’s a lot of weight for someone who doesn’t weigh much. My hair, despite its wild curls, was still young and vibrant, so I had no basis on which to pass judgment. I didn’t want to change that fact just yet. It was time to relax, so I put on some music and sat down on the couch to watch some movies. Not because we got into a fight, but because of life events, my small group of friends and I stopped spending time together when I started working two jobs. I was thinking about texting someone, but I wasn’t sure what to say. My plans for tomorrow were out of control, and I figured we could only talk about work for so long before we ran out of time. I decided to watch a movie and go to sleep as soon as possible, so I could get some rest.

When I woke up early the next morning on the couch, I couldn’t believe my eyes. My eyes scanned the room to see if the morning news was on, and then my gaze landed on the time displayed on the TV. Because it was seven o’clock, I had a lot of time on my hands today. To put it another way, I had a lot of time to think about what might go wrong. I sighed and climbed out of bed to make some coffee, my bare feet scurrying around the house. Beautiful, but not as safe, this apartment cost about $1,000 more than a comparable one in a different part of town. If I didn’t work two jobs, I was worried I wouldn’t be able to afford my nice apartment in a great part of town.

In the end, Brent’s actions would have no effect on my job. I might be able to get away with it if I rearranged my finances and took on a side job of some sort. Nothing, at least nothing more personal or intimate, would pay as much as the phone job. I drank the alcoholic beverage in order to slow down my thinking. Nothing could change your life tonight, and it’s possible that nothing will happen at all. I didn’t have to think about anything this morning. I went shopping to kill time and came home with a few new outfits. While contemplating Philip’s dinner plans for tonight, I had a light lunch. In addition to the hotel room number and arrival time, he didn’t provide me with any additional information. When I got back home, I took a hot shower and let my hair air-dry into its trademark curls. I used a small amount of hairspray to keep my hair from getting frizzy while I planned out the rest of my look in the mirror. The last thing I wanted was for Philip to think that I was putting in too much effort for him, but I also wanted to leave him breathless if possible.

A light foundation and dark eyeliner helped me achieve a more even complexion while also drawing attention to my eyes. The dress’s color necessitated that I apply shimmer to my brows and mascara to my lashes, so I did both first. I knew I looked good because Brent had told me so many times at work. I had to let nature take its course that night. With my hands full, I made my way to the front door and grabbed a large purse that I could fill with overnight necessities.

Because I don’t like driving in the city, I had arranged for a ride. I wrapped my long sweater around my body and slung my purse over my shoulder before locking my front door and going out to look for an Uber. As I buckled my seatbelt and climbed into the car’s bright blue interior, I couldn’t help but smile at the young woman behind the wheel. Every time the car slammed on the brakes, I felt a surge of adrenaline rush through my body. It was going to be a night to remember, no matter what happened tonight. My breath caught when we finally came to a halt in front of the magnificent hotel, and I took a few moments to admire it.

"Thank you," I mumbled as I handed her the money and walked to the curb. Relaxed and smiling, I let the sweater fall open in the typical Southern California weather. Something like this would be within my capabilities.

A doorman opened the heavy glass doors for me, giving me a second glance, and I smiled as I walked through. As I made my way to the elevators, I blushed and looked around with wide eyes at the stunning lobby.

In places like this, where I’m usually alone, I felt a little apprehensive as I nibbled on my lower lip. Was Philip’s life over now? Were his expectations high and, more importantly, did I have something to offer him?

I pressed the elevator button and waited in silence as my thoughts raced through my head. I walked into the half-filled car on shaky legs, my gaze falling to the floor, and I was nervous to the point of trembling. The seventh floor was the highest, and that was where I needed to be. Paused as a group of people made their way to their rooms before continuing on my own. Walking cautiously, I checked each sign for my destination to make sure it pointed in the right direction. Some of me wanted to flee from Chelle and head straight back to my apartment. As soon as I felt ready, I wanted to speak with Philip a few more times before deciding to cut all ties with him. If only a few more doors could be opened, I’d be there in no time.

Stopping suddenly, I exhaled a sigh of relief. No, I was not prepared for what was to happen. No, I didn’t want to continue with it.

I didn’t have much time to think before I was in front of the door. Knocking softly and slowly, I raised my hand as my breath had come to a complete halt. For better or for worse, this was the moment that had the power to transform my entire life for the better or worse. A knot formed in my stomach as I turned the doorknob, squeezing every last drop of Philip’s love into my chest.

My jaw dropped when I saw the expression on the other side. "No," I whispered as I retreated a step.
