Chapter 112: Colony Role Assigned: Maddy Becomes the Explorer.

Dyralfa puffed her chest proudly.

"Of course! You raised us!"

Arach rubbed the back of his neck again, embarrassed.

"We’re just doing what you taught us."

Sephiran pumped his fist into the air.

"BEST COLONY EVER!"

Frovian nodded thoughtfully.

"The structure appears to be functioning as intended."

Maddy chuckled at them.

"Good. Because while you all have your roles..."

She tapped her chest lightly.

"...I have one too."

The children blinked. Sephiran tilted his head.

"Mother has a role?"

Dyralfa grinned.

"Oh! I know!"

She pointed dramatically.

"Mother’s role is making more children!"

Sephiran gasped.

"OH YEAH!"

Frovian sighed quietly and teased them.

"I forgot these two had rocks in their brains..."

Maddy stared at them. Then she burst out laughing.

"No!"

She wiped a tear from the corner of her eye.

"Okay yes, technically that is something I do but that’s not my only role."

Her expression slowly grew serious again.

"What I’m about to do... going to the surface, approaching the Guild... it’s not just because I want to see the world."

The cavern grew quiet.Maddy folded her arms behind her back and began pacing slowly in front of them like a teacher addressing a class.

"This is a role, too."

Her glowing eyes lifted toward the distant ceiling, as if she could see the surface far above.

"In a colony, there are those who guard... those who gather... those who nurture."

She paused.

"And there are those who explore."

Her voice lowered slightly.

"Explorers are the ones who walk into dangerous territory first. They map unknown lands. They study enemies. They gather information so the rest of the colony can survive."

She placed a hand against her chest again.

"That... is my role."

The children listened intently.

"I will go to the surface. I will find their Guild. I will learn how their world works. I will discover how large their forces are... how dangerous their heroes are... and how far their influence spreads."

She looked at each of her children one by one.

"And most importantly... I will make sure you are safe from them."

The cave fell silent. Then her eyes narrowed slightly.

"...Or that they are safe from us."

A small chill passed through the chamber. Dyralfa’s tail swayed slowly. Sephiran’s eyes were wide with awe. Arach crossed two of his arms while the others rested at his sides, thinking carefully about her words. Then Frovian stepped forward. His amphibian eyes gleamed with understanding.

"Ah... I see."

He folded his arms.

"That is remarkably clever, Mother."

The others looked at him. Frovian tilted his head slightly.

"What Mother is describing... is essentially the same tactic used by adventurers."

Sephiran blinked.

"Huh?"

Frovian began pacing lightly as he explained.

"The Guild never charge blindly into unknown territory. First, they send scouts. Explorers. Individuals capable of observing threats, gathering intelligence, and returning with information. Those are the ones we faced: the adventurer parties Mother dealt with."

His eyes flicked toward Maddy with admiration.

"And Mother has decided to use their own strategy... against them."

Dyralfa grinned.

"Ohhh... sneaky."

Arach nodded slowly.

"That actually makes a lot of sense."

Frovian stopped walking and gave a respectful bow of his head toward Maddy.

"Brilliant, Mother. Truly amazing!"

His voice carried genuine praise.

"You are not simply reacting to the world outside. You are studying it... adapting to it... preparing for it. If the Guild truly believes monsters are mindless creatures..."

His eyes gleamed.

"They are about to be very disappointed."

Sephiran suddenly pumped his fist into the air again.

"YEAH! Our Mom is the smartest monster ever!"

Dyralfa laughed loudly.

"Of course she is! She made us!"

Vermi added her worm-dog like response.

"Wrff!!"

Arach scratched the back of his head but nodded firmly.

"...Just be careful up there, Mother."

Maddy looked at all of them. Her strange, beautiful family. Her colony. And for a moment, her smile was softer than anything in the dark cavern.

Maddy crossed her arms confidently.

"Don’t worry."

Her voice carried the calm assurance of someone who had already planned ten steps ahead.

"Your mother is not walking into their world unprepared."

The tension in the cavern softened. Her children looked visibly relieved. But Sephiran suddenly raised his hand.

"Wait!"

Everyone turned to him. The young monster shifted awkwardly, his fingers fidgeting around the handle of his bat.

"Mother... I have one more request."

Maddy tilted her head slightly.

"Yes, my baby?"

Sephiran looked down for a moment before speaking again, his voice quieter than usual.

"Can... can you go tomorrow morning instead?"

The others blinked. Sephiran rubbed the back of his neck, embarrassed.

"I mean... you’re leaving anyway... and you’re going to be gone for a while..."

His eyes lifted to meet hers.

"So... could you spend the rest of today with us first?"

He smiled nervously.

"I want to hear more of your stories again. The ones about the strange things from your dreams."

It was clearly... Maddy’s old life she was sharing with them.

Sephiran swayed a little.

"And maybe... you could tell one during dinner... and another before bedtime?"

For a moment, the cavern was silent. Then Maddy’s expression softened completely.

Her shoulders relaxed, and a warm smile spread across her face.

"...Of course."

Sephiran’s eyes immediately lit up.

"Really?!"

Maddy reached forward and gently ruffled his hair.

"I wasn’t planning to leave tonight anyway, you little monster."

She chuckled softly.

"We still have the entire day together."

She straightened up and looked around the cavern again.

"And besides..."

Her gaze shifted toward the growing mountain of corpses piled in the Monster Chamber.

"I noticed that Arach and Dyralfa brought back some rather interesting monsters from the forest. I think those deserve a proper look."

She clapped her hands together once.

"Which means we’ll have plenty to talk about during dinner... hot baths... and bedtime stories."

Sephiran beamed. Dyralfa grinned.. Frovian smirked. Vermi wiggled her tail.

Then Arach revealed what he had been hiding on his other arms: they were full of gathered floras from the forest.

"I knew this was coming! Here, Mother, I also gathered plenty of plants, fungi, and some strange ones that I know you can turn into spices to make your cooking even tastier!"

Dyralfa roared,

"YEAHHHH! We’re about to taste the new monsters those adventurers were hoarding! And the best part—Mother’s here to cook them for us!"

Everyone laughed at Arach’s excitement and Dyralfa’s roar. They really, really wanted to taste those monsters...
