Chapter 27: Comfort in the darkness

He felt lost.

He was stuck in a dark space that felt like it was getting smaller and smaller. Constricting all of his senses. Fear filled his chest, making his breath come in short, rapid bursts. He couldn’t see, and he couldn’t hear anything but the sound of his own rapid breaths.

The small space kept closing in on him, hitting his arms and legs, scratching painfully. He had no idea what the material of the space was, but it burned his skin, causing painful welts all over his body. He could feel the pain, but he couldn’t see why. He could only feel the panic setting in as a sticky, warm substance began to coat his fingers and he screamed.

"-drew. Andrew!" A name, a voice that sounded familiar filled his ears followed by a scent. It felt...familiar, and soothing. The space suddenly didn’t feel so small, and he felt his breath come in smoother, but still short breaths.

"Andrew, Baby, are you alright?" The voice soothed him further. "Please, Baby, answer me." The space he had been in shattered, and he slowly peeled his eyes open. He was greeted with a beautiful sight.

A man leaned over him, his face close to his own. His dark hair framed his face, bringing the paleness of his skininto contrast. His bright, vibrant blue eyes were pools of worry, and his mouth was downturned into a concerned frown.

"Andrew?"

"An angel?" He muttered, and watched as the beautiful creature turned bright red.

"Are you awake?" The angel asked, and he felt a slow, happy smile cross his face.

"Of course not. How else would I be so lucky to have something so beautiful in front of me?" Flustered, the Angel looked away, either not used to others commenting on his beauty, or him specifically. He rustled with something near his head, taking a few moments to struggle before he shoved glasses onto his face.

"Andrew, do you know who I am?" The man who now assumed his name was Andrew, took a moment to look around now that he could see everything.

The room was a rich slate colour, with several shades of brown accents. The ceiling was painted a darker, almost black shade of gray. The bedsheets were a soft, light gray shade, with a darker gray duvet on top. There was a panel of vertical stained wood on the wall across from him in a nice, cinnamon shade. There was a door on a rolling hinge that was the same shade. Andrew knew that hide a bathroom, but how did he...?

His eyes went wide, and he gasped, turning his gaze back to the man beside him. The man whose bed he was lying in. The man who was still bright red, and not meeting his gaze.

"Oh my god, Maxwell!" Maxwell’s eyes darted to Andrew’s panicked expression, before his shoulders visibly relaxed.

"You’re lucky. I was two seconds away from calling that Doctor friend of yours." Andrew’s face felt hot, his whole body warming up in embarrassment. He covered his face with his hands.

"I am...so sorry." He muttered into his hands. Maxwell’s soft chuckle soothed a part of him he hadn’t even been aware was anxious.

"It’s fine. I just was worried that it was a side effect from the drugs in your system. I was originally waking you up because you yelled." Andrew felt his body stiffen.

"I yelled?" He asked, and Maxwell nodded when he glanced at him through his fingers.

"Yeah. I was upstairs and came running when I heard you. Did you have a nightmare? Are you alright?" Maxwell’s concern for him was genuine, and Andrew felt his shoulders hunch.

"Oh, uh, I can’t actually remember it." Andrew told him, being sincere. Once the sleepiness had faded from his mind, the memories of his nightmare disappeared. "I don’t think it was that bad, if I’m not remembering it." Andrew told the smaller man. Maxwell frowned at him, staring at him until he reached out and touched his forehead.

Andrew let the man fuss over him, secretly pleased that Maxwell was doing so.

"Are you sure? You seemed..." Maxwell trailed off, his expression closed. Andrew wasn’t sure what behaviour he had displayed, but he knew when another needed to be soothed.

Andrew reached out, pulling the man onto the bed with him. Maxwell was startled, throwing his hand against the wall to support himself as Andrew placed his hands on the smaller man’s thighs. He gave a squeeze as he shifted him closer, further up his body.

"I’m fine, Max. Look at me, do I seem to be troubled?" Andrew asked with a grin, but Maxwell didn’t answer in the positive. Instead, he looked down at him, clearly upset and Andrew gave his thighs a squeeze with his hands. "Max. Maxwell. Maxy. Look at me." Maxwell slowly raised his eyes, previously staring at the marks that peppered his skin.

"Maxy?" He protested softly, and Andrew smiled at him softly.

"You don’t like that one?" Andrew teased, pleased that the nicknames distracted him enough to get his gaze up and on his face.

"It’s...not my favourite." He commented, and Andrew chuckled.

"Well, that sounds like it’s going to become mine." Maxwell’s brows furrowed, and Andrew bent forward, pressing his forehead against the man’s chest. He was already wearing a full suit, and Andrew wondered what time it was. He inhaled his scent, the scent of this omega soothing him easily. He wondered if this would apply to other omegas he’d interact with in the future, or if this was a Maxwell exclusive.

He didn’t worry about it too much. He also didn’t want to find out the answer.

"That is an awful thing to say to the man who has been housing you." Andrew tilted his head back to stare at Maxwell’s stern face, before he grinned.

"Awe, but you wouldn’t kick me out, would you Maxy?" He watched as his ears turned pink, before Maxwell sighed. He closed his eyes, taking a few deep breaths before he turned a glare towards him.

"I’ll have to leave the house for a couple of hours. My father secured some security just in case, and Dr. Smith should be swinging by. If you wanted, I could have someone pop over to your place to grab some of your things." Andrew sighed, dropping his head so he could inhale Maxwell’s scent without feeling judged.

"...yeah. I’ll give them my code to get in." Andrew muttered into Maxwell’s chest. Maxwell raised his hand to gently pat the new alpha on the shoulder.

"Dr. Smith also has a better, calibrated rut suppressant for you. He was worried about you all night, and even bothered me early in the morning. Thankfully, I was awake, but it was quite rude of him." Andrew froze, before jerking back and really looking at Maxwell. He gasped.

"You didn’t go to bed, did you?" Andrew accused, and Maxwell wouldn’t meet his gaze. He didn’t need to, Andrew could see the circles under his eyes for himself, now that he was looking at him. "Max, you need to sleep." Andrew watched as Maxwell’s jaw worked, before he turned his gaze to Andrew.

"I had...too many thoughts in my head." Maxwell admitted, and Andrew gave his thighs a squeeze.

"Was it because of me? Was I the problem?" Andrew asked quickly, too quickly, and Maxwell frowned. With his free hand, he reached down and pinched his nose. Andrew winced.

"Do not even let your brain go there. You are no bother. I just had some work I needed to get done and before I knew it, it was morning." Maxwell told him, and Andrew felt his shoulders relax.

"Oh thank goodness. I worried I was causing you problems. I hated the idea that I was taking up your bed and that you weren’t comfortable to sleep in it. That is the last thing I would have wanted." Maxwell’s lips turned up slightly before he leaned down and planted a kiss on his forehead. Andrew’s eyes went wide.

"That is not the case. I would have slept in the bed if I had the desire to, but I had put off some work worrying about you." Andrew froze, and Maxwell realised that was the wrong thing to say from his expression.

"I’m so-"

"Hush, Andrew. That’s not what I meant." Andrew gave Maxwell a sad look, and Maxwell sighed. "I’m serious. Are you going to get upset at me for something I wanted to do?" Andrew’s expression froze, while Maxwell’s hardened. Andrew wasn’t sure what he should do. He didn’t want to upset Maxwell, but he didn’t like the idea that Maxwell suffered in any way, even minorly, because of him.

"I just don’t want you to have to...change your habits because of me." Andrew muttered, and Maxwell sighed. Shifting, he sat back into the hold Andrew had on his thighs, taking Maxwell’s face in his hands and squeezing Andrew’s dumb face. freewebnoveℓ.com

"Don’t you dare say that. I am not upset at all about you interrupting my everyday life. Would you be upset if I did the same? If I came to you after an attack and needed your help?" Andrew shut his mouth, and was rewarded with Maxwell’s open, easy smile. "Exactly. So shut that pretty mouth of yours, and let me worry about everything. Your job is to adjust, and get better." He told him warmly, and Andrew sighed. He’d thoroughly lost.

"Alright Maxy, I’ll do what you ask." Maxwell’s frown made Andrew laugh, and he moved his hands up Maxwell’s back to hug him close to his body. As long as Maxwell was okay.
