Chapter 32: Saved From Death

"It means," Charles said slowly, his voice cold and detached, "I can’t fully cure you... not yet, anyway. The best I can do for now is stabilize the raw mana inside you. It’ll keep you alive and prevent the mana from tearing you apart... for the time being." He placed the book back on the desk, his expression unreadable. "But this is only temporary. Until I find the information I need, you’ll have to be extremely careful."

Elliot’s eyes widened with hope. "Then let’s do it!" He practically jumped to his feet, his determination reignited. 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

Charles let out a soft chuckle at Elliot’s enthusiasm. "Alright, sit down and get comfortable," he instructed, motioning to the bed. Elliot quickly sat cross-legged, closing his eyes to focus. Charles took a deep breath and placed his hands on Elliot’s, his fingers warm and steady.

Energy began to flow from Charles into Elliot, a powerful surge that made Elliot’s body tremble. Beads of sweat formed on both their foreheads as Charles channeled his power, guiding the chaotic raw mana inside Elliot and calming it. The pain was excruciating, burning through Elliot’s body as if he was being torn apart from the inside. His jaw clenched, his muscles tense as he fought to stay still, determined not to interrupt the process.

After what felt like an eternity, Charles finally released his grip, staggering back with exhaustion. Elliot collapsed onto the bed, gasping for breath as pain continued to ripple through him. But slowly, the agony faded, replaced by a soothing, refreshing sensation. His chest no longer felt like it was on fire.

Charles sat down, his breathing heavy as he asked, "How do you feel?"

Elliot stayed silent for a moment, his body still recovering. But then, a smile of relief spread across his face. "I... I don’t feel the pain anymore..."

Charles scoffed, his voice hoarse. "Don’t get too comfortable. It’s only temporary. Do anything stupid, and you’ll be right back where you started."

Elliot managed a weak smile. "Yeah... I got it. Thanks... Charles."

Charles waved a dismissive hand, his expression returning to its usual smug arrogance. "Uh-huh," he muttered nonchalantly, but the slight curl of his lips betrayed his satisfaction. "Thanking me now is still too early. The raw mana inside you is still unstable, but I’ve managed to calm it down for now. If you’re careful, it should hold until I figure out a more permanent solution."

Elliot’s shoulders sagged in relief, his gratitude overflowing. "Still... I can’t thank you enough. I thought I was done for," he confessed, his voice shaking slightly as he recalled the unbearable pain and the looming threat of death. "I really owe you one."

Charles’ eyes gleamed with amusement as he crossed his arms over his chest. "You owe me more than just one," he remarked with a sly grin. "You nearly burned yourself to death by recklessly absorbing that crystal’s mana. Honestly, if I weren’t so generous, I’d let you suffer the consequences."

Elliot’s cheeks flushed with embarrassment, knowing Charles was right. He had been too hasty, too eager to grow stronger and break free from his entanglement with Azreal. But his desperation had nearly cost him his life. Bowing his head, he muttered, "I know... I was reckless. I just... I didn’t want to stay weak."

Charles’ expression softened momentarily before he scoffed. "You and your obsession with strength... What a troublesome idiot," he teased, but his tone lacked malice. He glanced at Elliot, his eyes serious as he added, "Well, at least you’re not dead yet. And if you manage to survive this, you’ll actually come out stronger."

Elliot’s eyes widened. "Stronger?"

Charles nodded, his smugness returning. "If the raw mana inside you is tamed and fully integrated, you’ll advance to the highest level in E rank. Just by absorbing that crystal’s power." He let out a low chuckle as he watched Elliot’s jaw drop. "Lucky bastard."

Elliot was stunned. E rank? The highest level in E rank? He could feel his heart pounding in his chest, excitement coursing through his veins. If he could achieve that, he’d be one step closer to his goal—to become strong enough to annul his marriage with Azreal. But then, he remembered the cost—the agonizing pain, the threat of death. The excitement faded slightly as he realized just how close he had come to losing everything.

Turning to Charles, Elliot’s eyes gleamed with newfound determination. "Thank you... Seriously, I mean it. You saved my life." He hesitated, then added, "I won’t forget this."

Charles shrugged, brushing off the gratitude. "Yeah, yeah. Don’t get all mushy on me," he grumbled, though his lips twitched in amusement. "Anyway, don’t do anything stupid. Again.... what I did was merely calming the raw mana inside you and stabilizing your meridians. Any reckless move from you will undo all my hard work. Got it?"

Elliot’s back straightened as he nodded earnestly. "I understand. I’ll be careful. I don’t want to go through that pain again."

Satisfied with the response, Charles waved his hand dismissively. "Good. Then get lost. I need to rest."

Elliot chuckled softly, realizing Charles was more exhausted than he let on. As he stood to leave, a thought crossed his mind, and he paused at the door. Turning back, he asked, "Ermmm, you mentioned the other day about signing up for training sessions, but you didn’t explain much. Can you tell me more?"

Charles looked at him, his eyes narrowing thoughtfully. "Oh, that," he muttered, scratching the back of his head. "I don’t have much idea either. I haven’t signed up yet, but I’m planning to check it out in the next few days. If you want, you can tag along."

Elliot nodded eagerly someone guiding him around was wayy better. "Alright," he agreed. "Let me know when you plan to go. I’ll join you."

Charles grunted in acknowledgment, waving his hand dismissively. "Yeah, whatever. Now get out. You’re ruining my peace."

Elliot grinned, feeling a warmth he hadn’t felt in a while. Despite his smug arrogance, Charles had saved his life without hesitation. Elliot knew he owed him more than just gratitude. With one last look, he nodded. "I’ll see you later then. And... seriously, thank you."

With that Elliot returned to his dorm room.
