’This is...not as uncomfortable as I thought it would be. Or maybe it is because I have been here so many times before that it does not feel awkward for me to be here anymore.’

Shuu looked around the Emperor’s room with a lazy sigh.

He knew that it was time for him to get up and head out, but he did not want to get up.

The kids were still sleeping around him, and Shuu pushed his body back on the bed to be beside them and relax. And he would have stayed like this the whole day, had the knock at the door not interrupted him.

Since Emperor Kaiden was not in the room, Shuu debated whether he should open the door or not. But in the end, he decided to open it because it sounded urgent.

Knock

Emperor Kaiden’s chambers were huge, and they even had a dedicated guest area before the bedroom. It took some time for Shuu to cross it all and get to the door to open it.

"What do you want?"

He asked a flustered guard standing on the other side of the door.

The poor guard looked like he was having a hard time, and he looked inside the room before he focused on Shuu standing in front of him before looking away again.

"I...that is...Princess Danielle wants to have a talk with you."

The flustered guard told Shuu as he diverted his eyes. He looked quite nervous, and Shuu had a feeling that most of it was Emperor Kaiden’s fault.

But Shuu did not mind it as much as he should.

In fact, it felt a little liberating to not have people looking at him weirdly all the time. He preferred when people kept their gazes to themselves.

"I see. Princess Danielle wants to meet me? Unfortunately, it will take me some time to get ready. You can ask her to come and meet me in the Emperor’s chambers for now...and also get a maid to bring some clothes for the children."

Shuu reminded the guard, and the flustered guard nodded before he quickly ran away.

Once he was gone, Shuu went to the washroom to clean himself up.

Magic was an amazing thing, and it had made water readily available at all times. It helped Shuu clean up faster, and as for clothes...he decided to wear the Emperor’s robes.

They were swimming around him, but with the help of some ribbons in the right places, he made do and went out. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞

Somehow, the kids were still asleep, and Shuu decided to leave them be and headed toward the guest area.

Princess Danielle was already waiting for him there, but she was not the only one. She had brought Lady Canarie along with her, and the nervous lady looked around the Emperor’s guest chamber with a fascinated look on her face.

Shuu did not like the fact that a stranger like Lady Canarie was so close to Kaiden’s bedchamber, but he did not want to make a scene either.

So he remained calm and took the seat opposite Lady Canarie and Princess Danielle.

"Princess Danielle, the guard told me that you wanted to see me? What can I help you with?"

Shuu asked the princess, and she crossed her hands and rested them on her legs with a serious expression on her face.

Her eyes looked directly at Shuu when she spoke her next words.

"I did want to have a talk with you, Shuu. And it is very important as well. I hope you won’t take it the wrong way, but I do need you to have a talk with Emperor Kaiden regarding this ’companion’ issue."

Princess Danielle did not skirt around the issue. Unlike others who had to be careful about what they say, she did not have this issue.\So she decided to present the issue at hand directly to Shuu.

She could tell that Shuu was taken aback by her request, even if he did not show it on his face. His eyes looked at her with a calmness she had not seen before, and it was her time to get startled.

"I am afraid that I will be of no help to you. Emperor Kaiden has a right to choose his own companion, and should he choose someone else, I will step away. But I will not ’take a step back’ as you all put it."

Shuu told the Princess and her companion.

This was the first time Princess Danielle had seen Shuu like this.

He was mostly docile and easy-going most of the time, so she had expected him to be the same way now as well. But his newfound position made her feel a little startled.

"Tsk, what do you mean you won’t back down? Don’t you realize what is happening? The goddess is telling you that you are not the right person for Emperor Kaiden. You should honor her wish and back down."

"I am sorry, but this is not up for debate. The goddess might have made a decision, but that does not mean Emperor Kaiden has to follow it. He is free to make his own decisions."

Shuu shot Princess Danielle and Lady Canarie down in an instant. He was not even listening to their words anymore.

Danielle could tell that Canarie was getting heated up. This was not a good sign and likely meant that it was time for her to pull back.

"You-!"

"We understand your position. If this is what you have decided, then we won’t pursue this any longer. But Shuu, do think about this all once more. If the goddess has made her decision, she must have made it for a reason."

Princess Danielle reminded him, but Shuu remained calm and composed. He did not show any signs of being affected by what he had just heard.

In the end, Princess Danielle sighed and stood up. There was no longer a point in staying back here.

"Canarie, we should leave now. We need to prepare for your first official appearance at the next tea party."

Princess Danielle reminded her, and Canarie gritted her teeth and followed her out. But not before she glared at Shuu one last time.
