Cough.

Shuu tried to control himself, but the bitter and sour taste invading his mouth refused to go away. And he was not the only one suffering here. The kids looked like they were suffering as well.

"Shuu-! I’m dying-!"

Caelis sounded serious when he said that. His eyes looked at Shuu with a mature certainty when he looked at him.

"You are not dying, Caelis. Some water and actual sweets will make this right. But before that, let’s brush our teeth."

Shuu told the kids, and for the first time, they did not complain about hygiene. This told him just how bad the situation was.

"I will go and get you something from the kitchen."

Nero told him, but Shuu dismissed him with a wave of his hand.

"It is alright. You can send a maid to get it for us. I am sure you have more important things to be doing."

Shuu told Nero, and Nero paused to give him a look before he sighed in frustration.

He knew that Shuu was right. Nero needed to report what happened back to Kaiden and make preparations for the future.

But he still felt a little frustrated over what happened.

"Alright, I will head out to meet Emperor Kaiden and report to him now. Just... make sure you take care of yourself, alright?"

Nero told Shuu, and he nodded before he grabbed the kids and dragged them back to his room. They quickly brushed their teeth, and the maids brought water and sweets for them immediately.

The taste finally went away, but the memory of that taste refused to bleed out of their minds anytime soon.

Nero paused in front of Emperor Kaiden’s chamber with a nervous sigh. He was not sure if he wanted to go in or not. But he knew that procrastinating was not an option either...

’Is this going to be my last day on earth? Then I guess I better make the best of it...’

"How long are you going to hover outside my door like this? Either enter or go away."

Emperor Kaiden’s voice startled Nero, and he ended up opening the door with a sigh.

"I am sorry. I was just caught a little bit in my thoughts. I am sure you must have heard all about what happened up until now. I don’t think I need to repeat any of it, right?"

Nero asked as he finally entered the room.

He instantly felt chills as those cold eyes focused on him.

"I did hear of what happened. So, did you find out how that guard and those maids died?"

Shuu asked, and Nero answered immediately.

"Not yet. Unfortunately, there were too many people around for me to use my ability and track down the source of hidden magic. But still, the site felt far too clear for such a tragedy to happen."

Nero pointed out. He waited for the Emperor to add more, but Emperor Kaiden looked uninterested in saying anything more.

So Nero decided to continue speaking.

"Doesn’t it sound weird to you as well? Or do you already have an idea regarding what happened?"

Somehow, Nero wouldn’t put it past Kaiden to know what happened. Unfortunately, Emperor Kaiden just shook his head.

"I am not sure of what happened this time either, but I do have a few guesses about our culprit."

Nero nodded and did not ask much more. He had a feeling that asking any more would be of no use anyway.

Emperor Kaiden took a sip of his tea when the maid suddenly knocked at the door and entered. She had a very familiar-looking thing on her plate, which made Nero tense.

The maid quickly put the tray in front of Emperor Kaiden and handed him the tea and the new snack she had brought.

"What is this?"

Kaiden asked as he looked at the candy in front of him, and the maid let out a small smile.

"This is a special candy made by Lady Canarie. She told me that it is her land’s specialty, and she prepared it by hand for you. Please have some-"

"I don’t need it. You can take it back and distribute it among the other servants."

Emperor Kaiden told the maid, and the maid looked struck. She looked at the candy and then at the Emperor with an almost envious expression.

Nero saw her expression and quickly gestured for her to leave. And the maid did that quickly.

"That maid was new, right? I don’t think I have seen her before."

Nero asked the Emperor, and Kaiden suddenly let out a frustrated sigh.

"She’s likely that annoying pest... the one with Danielle, the maid who came here to bring me tea and snacks from her. Both she and the other pest have been giving me a headache these days."

Emperor Kaiden told Nero with a straight face. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦

Frankly, Nero was shocked at how docile Emperor Kaiden was being about this whole thing. Usually, heads would be flying around by now.

"I am only calm because I do not want Shuu to catch wind of all this. But I will remove these pests as soon as I am done diverting Shuu’s attention."

Emperor Kaiden told Nero with a straight face. He was planning something, and unfortunately, he had decided not to tell anyone what it was this time. That included Nero as well.

’Tsk, just what is Kaiden planning? There is no way of knowing that just yet. I just hope it’s not something that will work me to the bone.’

Somehow, Nero doubted he would get his wish.

"Anyway, I will be heading out now. The rest of this work can be handled by Laim, so make sure you tell him."

Emperor Kaiden stood up to leave, and Nero immediately gave him a worried look.

"Hey, where are you going now? Emperor Kaiden, what are you planning-"

"Aww, you wound me, my dear Nero. I am not planning anything right now. I am just going to pay Shuu a visit, so don’t worry about anything."

"Tsk, that’s what I am worried about the most here."
