Chapter 106: The Cowardince Serpent

Lucien never knew that spending time with Edmund while pretending the past did not exist could feel this gentle.

Maybe he had been too petty, too stubborn, too raw to let himself enjoy it. Ten years had passed, yet the wound never fully closed, and the love that once lived there refused to die.

It was a strange torment, the desire to hurt Edmund and the ache that struck twice as hard whenever he imagined doing it.

But still, he was curious about what had happened back then. Not like the Leopard, he still couldn’t move on from the past yet.

He walked along the beach barefoot, letting the cool grains of sand push between his toes.

When a soft glint caught his eye, he crouched and brushed away the sand from a small shell. Its surface shimmered with a warm pink glow under the afternoon sun.

He brought it to his ear and listened to the gentle murmur inside it, a whisper of waves contained in something so small. It felt peaceful in a way his heart never managed to be.

"Lucien, the hammock is ready." Edmund’s voice rolled across the shore, warm and unguarded.

Lucien stood and approached him. The man looked annoyingly good, wearing a loose, colorful shirt left open to show the firm lines of his chest.

His shorts hung just low enough to be distracting. Lucien refused to compliment him even in his mind, but he was undeniably sexy.

"My balance is terrible. I will just fall to the ground," Lucien sighed.

"I will lie down first, then you can sleep on top of me," Edmund said with that infuriating confidence.

He climbed onto the hammock and patted his chest. "Come here and join me in this embarrassing nonsense."

Lucien rolled his eyes but still moved toward him. Slowly, carefully, he settled on top of Edmund’s chest.

The warmth beneath him was solid and comforting. His ear rested right over Edmund’s heartbeat, which thudded far too fast.

"You beat this fast over something like this? We are not even kissing or doing anything," Lucien teased.

Edmund’s answer made his breath catch. "I know. I think I just love you too much. Even the smallest touch feels like my heart is about to burst."

Lucien froze. The sincerity in Edmund’s voice struck deeper than he wanted to admit. It reminded him of a time when those sweet lines were poetry instead of painful reminders.

"Funny how you still feel that way after abandoning me."

The moment he said it, Edmund’s body went still. The air thickened, and the silence gnawed at Lucien’s nerves.

Lucien lifted his head and glared at him. "Tell me why you stopped contacting me. Why did you leave me alone to deal with everything?"

Edmund took a long breath. His hands trembled slightly, and his eyes clouded with sorrow.

"Because I was weak, Lucien. I thought I had to protect you by staying away. If I fought for our love, I feared you would be hurt even worse. I thought distancing myself was the only way to keep you safe."

Lucien’s voice cracked. "You did not just abandon me. I had to slaughter so many of my own men because of what happened. I lost my friends and allies."

"None of it would have happened if you had simply answered your phone or replied to a single message."

A storm gathered in Edmund’s green eyes. "I was waiting for you too. You never came. You never answered my messages either. You were not the only one left behind. You abandoned me as well."

Lucien let out a bitter laugh and pushed himself off the hammock. He put distance between them, each step heavy.

"So now it is my fault? Really, Edmund? You cannot even apologize properly?"

Edmund stood and tried to reach for him, but Lucien kept backing away. The hurt on the alpha’s face cut deep, yet he could not bear to stop.

Edmund’s voice broke as he pleaded, "I am sorry. That is not what I meant. Please listen to me. Give me one chance to explain everything. Just once."

Lucien hesitated. His heart clawed at his ribs. He wanted the truth, but he feared it even more.

What if Edmund was right? What if all of it had been a massive misunderstanding that destroyed lives and crushed them both?

"I need time," Lucien whispered. "And then we will talk."

"But you are not going to disappear, right?" his voice was a plea to him, a pain to be abandoned once more.

Lucien looked away, didn’t dare to look at him, "I am still here, aren’t I?"

He turned before Edmund could see the tremble in his expression. His chest tightened painfully.

He hated himself for being afraid. He hated that he wasn’t like the Twinster that had forgiven far worse, and even after being forgotten, they still wanted him.

They still hoped in the dark where no one could reach them.

What if it really was his fault again?

His breath hitched as the fear twisted inside him. This was why the Serpent avoided anything that smelled like love. Feelings were a trap. They hurt more deeply than any blade.

He realized this when he saw Twinster and what he had done to them.

And now all he wanted to do was run away.

Mikhail could see the mansion from a distance, its silhouette rising above the mist that clung to the coastline.

He stood on an abandoned dock that had not been used in years, the wood creaking beneath his boots as the waves lapped lazily below.

"Rookie mistake," he murmured, amused by how exposed the mansion’s defenses looked from here.

His men were already lined up behind him in a clean formation, each of them already taking off all the diving equipment just like him.

They carried themselves like wolves waiting for the signal to hunt. Mikhail turned and inspected them with a calm, calculated stare.

"You take the Giant back. No noise. No unnecessary bodies. Remove anyone in your path and nothing more," he instructed, his voice steady and cold.

He had brought only seven men for this mission, but each one was elite in their own craft.

"Boss, what about you? You going in alone?" one of them asked.

Mikhail stepped toward the man and rested a strong hand on his shoulder. His grin spread slowly, dangerous and confident.

"I am going to bring my mate back. That is my job. Your job is to complete the mission. Do not disappoint me. We regroup here when everything is over. Understand?"

The men straightened and nodded in unison.

"Good. Now disperse. No more questions."

They moved instantly, sprinting across the shadowed woods toward the mansion. The rifles in their hands gleamed in the dim light, and their silhouettes slipped into the darkness like a pack of black ops ghosts.

Mikhail stayed behind for a moment and inhaled deeply. A familiar scent drifted in the air, warm and intoxicating. It curled into his lungs like a promise.

He smirked. "Your smell is as delicious as ever. Hard to believe you will be back in my hands soon."

With that, he turned and headed in a different direction from his men, moving with the relaxed confidence of a predator that already knew the hunt was won.
