Both Arthur and Ethan started walking towards the Shadwalker, who was sprawled beside a broken tree that probably broke because of it.

It wasn't moving, as if dead. The only indicator that it wasn't was the fact that its chest was moving ever so slightly because of its breathing.

Ethan could feel something unpleasant.

He didn't understand what it was properly, but the more he moved closer to the Shadwalker, the worse that feeling got.

Arthur, seemingly noticing his discomfort, explained.

"It's really unpleasant, right?"

Ethan nodded.

"Yeah..."

Arthur chuckled. "Do you know what that is?"

Ethan shook his head.

"No, I don't."

"That's killing intent."

"Ohh..." Ethan looked at him.

Arthur explained,

"It's something you can gain if you take a lot of life. It's something that accumulates, becoming more and more useful during hunting someone—or in its case,"

Pointing at the Shadwalker, he said,

"Hunting for prey."

Both of them stopped and looked at the fallen Shadwalker, which was acting like it was about to die.

Ethan, looking at it, asked,

"So what now?"

Arthur casually started saying,

"Now we slay it, remove its hide to sell it, and ether core, if it has any, to also sell it."

"Just that?"

Ethan asked, as he thought just that much would be a waste, as many of the creature could probably sell for a lot.

Even he knew that much.

Arthur, scratching his cheek, shook his head looking at Ethan.

"Nah, that's too much work. Not worth it."

Ethan didn't speak, but inside he was a little upset. It felt like they were wasting much more than they should.

Just as he looked back at the Shadwalker, though, it was gone.

"Huh..."

Before he could register anything, he saw from the corner of his eye a shadow racing towards Arthur's neck, transforming into sharp deadly claws. Ethan instinctively activated Flash Steps, wanting to save Arthur.

His perspective became fast. He tried to move his hand, racing towards Arthur, but he realized he couldn't reach Arthur in time.

He opened his mouth, shouting,

"Arthur, move away…."

But it seemed Arthur couldn't hear him.

Just as the claws were inches away from Arthur's neck, Arthur moved his head, looking directly at Ethan.

His lips curled up. He said,

"Next time be more careful."

Before Ethan could process what he meant, Arthur blurred.

Even though Flash Steps was activated, he couldn't see clearly how or what was happening.

So he deactivated it.

As he did, it seemed like Arthur was done, as he stood there just like before.

Ethan blinked as he saw that.

Arthur was looking down.

Ethan, following his gaze, saw what he was looking at.

It was the Shadwalker… but different.

This time it didn't have any legs attached to its body.

Its legs were next to it, piled up like wood.

Ethan gulped, not able to believe that the beast that almost killed him so easily was now in this state.

Arthur, walking around it, clapped Ethan's shoulder, pulling him out of a dazed state.

He asked,

"What happened?"

"Well, it was acting almost dead to let me put my guard down.

I was acting like I let my guard down so I could catch it by surprise.

And you… well, you were actually distracted."

Arthur smiled smugly.

He then asked,

"Did you see it?"

Ethan, looking back at him, shook his head.

"I couldn't. You were too fast."

Arthur, seemingly not bothered,

"Well, you'll see it as long as you train properly and become good at it."

Ethan nodded, not caring about it.

"Is it dead?" he asked.

"Almost," Arthur replied.

{Ahem ahem}

"Huh?"

Right then Ethan heard the system.

{Aren't you forgetting something, Host?}

"Huh? What?" Ethan questioned, tilting his head.

{Level 10... does that ring a bell?}

"Oh yeah, I forgot..."

Ethan remembered he needs to kill monsters to level up.

And a monster was right in front of him, almost dying.

Ethan, looking at Arthur, asked,

"Umm...

Can I?"

"Hm?"

Arthur, tilting his head as if asking what is it,

"Can I kill it?"

"Of course."

Arthur, seemingly oblivious, said,

"That's why I left it alive. You're supposed to deal the final blow."

"Oh..."

Ethan didn't know why Arthur did that, but well, he wasn't about to give up this opportunity.

"Hit it in the head," Arthur advised.

"It probably has an ether core in its heart, so we don't want to destroy it."

"Ohh..."

Ethan nodded, then took out the sword from his waist.

He felt a little nervous, so he asked the system in his mind,

"Hey system, what do I do now?"

{... Are you retarded?}

"What!!! No, of course not! How could you say that?"

{Then why are you acting retarded?

Just kill it.}

"Damn…"

Ethan was speechless.

Well, he was acting kinda retarded, but still…

Shaking his head inwardly,

He pointed the sword at the head of the beast.

His hands slightly shaking.

He heard Arthur speak.

"Go for it."

You have gained 1700 EXP.

Would you like to level up?)

Ethan's eyes widened, seeing how much EXP he gained.

He called out,

"Status."

A different window popped up in front of him.
