Chapter 86: I Believe You

After Edgar and Matthew excused themselves and returned to their house, Noah asked Jason to take a walk with him in the backyard.

He owes him a lot of explanations about Lucas Graham, and also more about himself.

As they headed toward the backyard garden, Noah opted to light his refreshing menthol cigarette while Jason walked silently beside him.

Then—

Noah stopped as they arrived at the pool area. While finishing his cigarette, he turned around to look at Jason.

"You can ask anything you want to ask, Jason—" He threw his cigarette butt and stepped on it lightly.

"Noah, I don’t know what Lucas Graham did to your father to make him want you to eliminate him, but I must warn you—Lucas was not an easy target. He is not an ordinary man. He—"

Jason’s voice trailed off, reluctant to voice what was troubling his mind now.

"What is it, Jason?" Noah’s concern grew as he saw Jason’s ghostly expression.

Too curious and worried about Jason’s strange expression—something he’d never seen before—Noah finally asked Zoe, even though the question sounded absurd.

’Can you read his mind?’

’Of course not, sir. But I could guess he might know about Lucas’s true self.’

Noah was surprised to hear that. ’Wait, does he realize Lucas isn’t human?’ he asked, keeping his eyes on Jason.

’Well, sir, you could try asking him—’

Noah waited a few minutes for Jason to say something, but he didn’t. He even averted his gaze, as if trying to hide the anxiety clearly seen in his eyes.

"Since when did Lucas Graham turn evil?" Noah asked, shifting his question to grab Jason’s attention. A faint smile played on his lips as he noticed Jason turn back to him.

"I know what you’re thinking, Jason..." Noah continued.

Even though only the moonlight and the garden lights lit up their surroundings, Noah could see that Jason’s frown became more noticeable.

Jason smirked grimly, turning to gaze at the moon as he revealed all his suspicions about Lucas Graham to Noah.

Noah was no longer surprised to hear Jason’s explanation, which matched what he had expected — Jason believed Lucas Graham was a devil in disguise. This was because Lucas had become cruel just a few months before he ousted Jason from the military to climb to the position he now holds.

After a while, Jason finally finished his explanation while looking at Noah.

"I’m lucky that man didn’t take my life. I’m also lucky he didn’t touch or eliminate my family. So Noah, I hope you don’t provoke him. That man is the embodiment of the most evil thing in this world. He could be the devil himself."

Tugging his hand into his trouser pocket, Noah smiled faintly as he listened to Jason’s warning, sensing the worry and concern in his gaze.

"Jason, do you believe me if I say that the real Lucas Graham is probably no longer alive? The person you thought was him was actually another creature—perhaps a devil, a demon, or something else entirely. That individual was not the Lucas Graham you once knew..."

Instantly, Jason felt a surge of cold blood run through him as he realized that all his suspicions about Lucas Graham were indeed true.

But now, he wondered, ’How did Noah find out about it?’

He has known Noah for almost three years and has never seen or heard Noah mention Lucas Graham.

"So you said, that person you met was not Lucas Graham?"

"Yes, the soul inside him is no longer Lucas. I’m not sure whether Lucas’ soul is still there or not... the only way for us to know is that I have to kill the devil first," Noah’s voice was cold enough to send a shiver down Jason’s spine.

Silence filled the air as both of them lost themselves in their own thoughts.

It is so difficult for Jason to believe what Noah said. It seems impossible for a devil to take over someone else’s body.

Such things only happen in stories or movies, right?

But after recalling that Noah was able to communicate with him through their mind link, his doubt gradually faded.

"Noah, even though what you said sounds unreasonable, I will believe you. I hope you have a way to rid Lucas Graham of the devil souls within him. He is someone I respect the most in my military career—my mentor. I will do whatever I can to help you."

"Jason, from now on, you only need to trust me. What happened around me will surprise you more..."

Noah didn’t complete his words. He simply smiled—that same mysterious, unsettling smile that always left more questions than answers.

"Alright, it’s almost midnight, and I feel guilty making my bed wait for me too long..." Noah casually said before turning and walking toward the house.

"My friend... You need a beautiful woman to warm your bed," Jason teased, smiling at his friends, who had changed a lot.

Noah nearly choked.

"Should I...?" he tossed his playful words over his shoulder as he kept walking.

"Yes!" Jason laughs.

Noah casually waved his hand nonchalantly as he stepped into the house.

...

The following morning, Noah awoke to the buzzing sound of his cell phone on the nightstand.

He planned to ignore it and go back to sleep, but when he looked out the window, he was surprised to see the bright light shining through the slightly open curtain.

"Oh fuck! I’m sleeping too much..."

He growled, looking at the clock; it was past nine. Hurriedly, he grabbed his cell phone.

"Hello..." he answers without checking who is calling.

But he was shocked to hear Alexis’s voice from the other end.

"Gosh, Noah, are you still asleep? Unbelievable! Do you know what time it is now?"

Alexis’ teasing laugh was enough to make Noah’s eyes widen. He cleared his throat before answering her with a lie, "Young lady, I stayed awake all night and was asleep just before dawn! And now you woke me up...geez!"

"Oops, sorry about that, Noah. I really didn’t mean to wake you!"

"It’s fine... I’m fully awake now," Noah responded with a faint smile, as if Alexis were in the room with him. Sitting by the edge of the bed, he asked, "Why do you call me this early, Alexis?"
