Chapter 239: Chapter 239: Real Culprit

Aurora was worried.

And her source of worry? Spencer!

That guy... he was ignoring her! On the first day, Aurora acted as if everything was alright and tried to talk with him, but Spencer only replied in two or three words.

Though he still brought her breakfast and lunch, he... was visibly colder!

By the second day, Aurora was having a headache!

This guy didn’t even want to chat with her! He didn’t send her any messages!

Aurora sat at her desk, resting her cheek on her hand and sighing for the hundredth time that day.

Mia was sitting beside her, watching her best friend sulk like a sad little puppy. It was the third sigh in two minutes.

"Aurora," Mia finally said, breaking the silence, "seriously—what happened between you and Spencer?"

Aurora bit her lip and hesitated. But she couldn’t hold it in anymore.

"I... I think I messed up," she whispered.

Mia leaned closer. "Tell me."

Aurora looked around to make sure no one was listening. Then she began, her voice low.

"Someone sent Spencer a video. Of me and you. I was calling you, baby, and being close to you." Aurora sighed again. "He thought something weird was going on between us. Like, me and you, Mia!"

Mia blinked. "Wait, what?"

Aurora nodded sadly. "Yeah. He said I wasn’t treating him like a priority and that I should focus only on him. He looked really serious, like super intense. I mean... he was being possessive."

Mia’s eyes widened a little. "Oh..."

"I got scared," Aurora admitted, shrinking into her seat. "I called him weird! He said sorry, but after that... he just started ignoring me."

Mia let out a long breath and leaned back in her chair. Then, after a moment, she said flatly, "You’re an idiot."

Aurora pouted. "Hey! It wasn’t my fault! He looked like a drama villain! I was scared!"

Mia rubbed her forehead like she was getting a headache. "Aurora... think. Maybe Spencer has abandonment issues. Maybe someone he loved left him behind before. That would explain why he’s acting like this. He probably loves you so much he’s scared of losing you."

Aurora’s mouth opened, but no words came out. Her brain kind of... froze.

"Oh..." she said finally. "I... never thought about that."

Mia crossed her arms. "Exactly. You need to understand him first. Then go talk to him. Don’t just yell and call him weird."

Aurora nodded slowly. "Okay... but how do I find out what his issue really is?"

"Well," Mia said, thinking, "you could try asking one of his friends..."

Then Mia grinned mischievously. "Or you could hack into his phone."

Aurora paused and blinked. "...That’s not funny, Mia."

Mia giggled. "Okay, okay, just kidding! ...Wait, are you actually considering it?"

Aurora didn’t reply. Just gave a tiny smirk.

Mia rolled her eyes. "Anyway, you should also find out who sent that video to Spencer in the first place."

Aurora nodded again, her expression growing dark.

Just then, she spotted Spencer walking past their classroom door.

Her eyes widened.

She stood up fast, her chair almost falling over. "I’m going."

"Where—" Mia started, but Aurora was already out the door.

She ran into the hallway, but Spencer had already disappeared.

Just when she was about to go back inside, she heard a voice behind her.

"Looking for Spencer?"

She turned around sharply.

Aiden.

Her brows furrowed the second she saw him. She turned away, not in the mood to deal with him.

But Aiden spoke again.

"If you’re going to ignore me, at least think about Spencer. If you don’t understand what he’s going through, he’s going to keep pushing you away."

Aurora stopped.

She looked over her shoulder, her eyes cold. "I haven’t forgotten what you did, Aiden."

Aiden looked confused. "What did I do?"

Aurora narrowed her eyes and gave a sharp smirk. "You know exactly what. Or do you want me to say it out loud?"

Aiden frowned. "I don’t know what you’re talking about."

She turned to face him fully now, arms crossed. "The video, Aiden. The one sent from your phone to Spencer."

Aiden froze like a statue. "...That wasn’t me."

Aurora chuckled bitterly. "Really? ’Cause my data shows it came from your phone. Don’t play dumb."

Aiden looked nervous now. He ran a hand through his hair. "Okay! I admit it—I asked someone to keep an eye on you. But not like that! I just wanted to make sure you were okay! I didn’t tell them to send Spencer any videos!"

Aurora didn’t look impressed.

Aiden kept talking fast. "It was a misunderstanding! My guy must’ve thought he was doing the right thing! I never told him to send anything to Spencer! I swear!"

Aurora stared at him for a long second, then gave a soft, fake laugh.

"Whether you meant it or not," she said, her voice calm but sharp, "you’re the reason he got that video. So even if the whole world forgives you... I won’t."

Aiden stood still in the hallway, not knowing what to say as Aurora turned to leave. His mouth opened, then closed, then finally, he called out.

"I swear! On all the wealth I have—every last bit—I didn’t send those videos to Spencer!"

Aurora paused. Her back was still to him. Then, slowly, she turned around and looked at him, her eyes serious.

"Even if you’re telling the truth," she said, "why should I trust you? You did ask someone to spy on me. And I still don’t even know why you’re watching me."

Aiden looked down, a bit ashamed. "I... I can’t explain everything," he mumbled. "But I’m not watching you for something bad. I just... I wanted to protect you."

Aurora raised an eyebrow. "Protect me? Why?"

Aiden hesitated again. Then, he looked up at her and said softly, "Because someone very important to me... loves you."

Aurora blinked in surprise. "Are you talking about Spencer?"

Aiden nodded. "Yeah."

His voice was quiet, almost guilty. "I messed up. I’ve done a lot of things that made things worse between me and Spencer. And now, I just want to make it right."

Aurora stared at him for a moment. Then she sighed and crossed her arms. "If you really want to make it right, then tell me everything you know. The truth. No secrets. And if you lie to me—"

She leaned forward a little, her eyes sharp.

"I’ll make sure your whole family goes bankrupt."

Aiden blinked, then suddenly chuckled. He didn’t mean to be rude, but it was kind of funny. "You? Make my family bankrupt? You’re in high school."

Aurora didn’t say anything. She just stared at him, her eyes dead serious.

Something about that look made Aiden stop laughing.

"...Okay," he said quietly. "I’ll be honest."

He looked around and then motioned toward a nearby empty classroom. "Come on. Let’s talk somewhere private."

They stepped into the quiet room. It was empty except for some chairs and desks. The sun peeked through the windows, casting long shadows on the floor.

Aiden sat down and rubbed the back of his neck.

"I can’t tell you everything. Some stuff isn’t mine to share. But... I can tell you this—Spencer had a really rough childhood."

Aurora stayed quiet, listening carefully.

"Like... really bad. The kind where, if you knew even half of it, you wouldn’t be able to sleep properly."

He looked at her, his voice low.

"There were times when Spencer wanted to... you know, not be here anymore. He used to think about ending it all."

Aurora’s breath caught in her throat. Her chest ached, and for a second, she couldn’t move. Just the thought of Spencer—kind, caring Spencer—being in that much pain...

Her heart broke.

"W-Why?" she whispered. "What happened to him?"

Aiden looked away for a moment, then spoke again.

"When he was younger, he had this childhood friend. Someone who meant the world to him. They were always together. That friend helped him hold on, kept him going when everything else was falling apart."

He paused.

"But then one day... that friend left. Moved away, disappeared, something like that. And they never contacted Spencer again. Just... gone."

Aurora frowned. Her stomach twisted. "Was the friend a girl or a boy?"

Aiden raised his eyebrows, then chuckled. "I don’t know for sure. But... I think it was a boy."

Aurora let out a small sigh of relief before nodding slowly.

Aiden continued, "Whenever Spencer felt like he couldn’t take it anymore, he used to think about that friend. Like... what would that friend say? What would they do if they knew how he was feeling?"

Aurora listened closely, her heart heavy.

"And then there’s his mom..." Aiden added after a pause. "She left him too."

Aurora’s eyes widened. "What?"

"Yeah. She gave him up. Left him with his dad’s family just so she could have her freedom. She said she loved him, but she still walked away."

Aiden’s voice was filled with quiet anger.
