Chapter 325: An Early Precaution

Caddel met his crimson eyes for a brief clarification, his jaw clenching, and he could still remember how they had forged this plan.

Ivan had set him free from his entrapment, to his greatest surprise. The guards had fetched him out and helped him look more presentable before taking him to Ivan in the throne room. That would be his first time stepping into the King’s throne room, but he dared not survey, cause one thing was for sure, he wasn’t brought here to have a look at the throne’s magnificent grandeur.

Coming to a stop at the heart of the throne room, he lowered his head in a bow, but Ivan remained seated on his throne, his leg overlapping the other as he studied Caddel. The sight of his eyes were piercing back then, even with the fact he wasn’t staring directly at it. Caddel cleared his throat and lifted his head, but his eyes were still fixed on the red carpeted floor.

"Surprised?" Ivan’s voice held a slight tinge of humor, but Caddel refused to show any reaction. Regardless of what he might have presumed when the guards came for him, he knew he wasn’t freed to be set free. frёeωebɳovel.com

"Why did you release me?"

"I told you your personality intrigues me," Ivan propped his hand on the armrest, lazily resting his head on it. "Today, I want to believe in second chances. Redemption is a powerful force, and you might find it if you choose wisely."

In the blink of an eye, Caddel could sense Ivan’s presence just three feets away from him. He had learned about the delicate imbalance of Ivan’s mood after his wife’s disappearance from the Palace, and he knew better than to act against his wishes.

"I have a task for you," he dropped, "one I’m sure you’re not capable of refusing, that is if you wish to see your sister again." At this point, Ivan circled the young man who’s interest had been piqued at the mention of his sister. Using his trick card carefully, Ivan laid out his plan to Caddel.

"You will go to the Southern horizon and infiltrate the kingdom your sister is in, find out about the missing children, where they are and what she does to them. Don’t worry about the assets, I shall provide you with enough resources to accomplish your journey safely to their borders. Now your presence there is more of a precaution, a plan B. In case my initial approach to invade their Palace fails, and I somehow get captured, you’ll be my escape route."

Ivan’s orders hung heavily in the air, and Caddel hesitated, uncertainty reflecting in his gaze as he asked, "what if I get caught?"

"I have faith in your resourcefulness," answered Ivan as he placed a hand on Caddel’s shoulder, "if you get caught, a lot of things can go wrong. Your sister will fall in too, and I know you don’t want that, so try your best to avoid letting such happen. I don’t know what to expect, neither am I aware of their strategies, but with you there, things can fall into place, and we’ll both get what we want at the end of it."

"You trust that I won’t turn my back on you?" Caddel lifted his gaze to the empty throne in front of him, and he knew the vampire was standing behind him. His body jolted slightly when he felt something sharp on his back, it felt like a dagger was threateningly positioned behind him, and that made him keep quiet.

"If you turn your back, you’ll get stabbed in the back, are we clear?" Sending the message and confirming he received it, Ivan withdrew his weapon and came to stand in front of Caddel. Turns out, it wasn’t a dagger, but a royal scepter, except one could easily mistake it for a weapon, considering how it was being dangerously honed.

"You’ll leave tonight," Ivan waved him off as he returned to his throne, "we won’t stay in touch until we meet at the palace. This is an ultimate risk I’m willing to take, and I expect you to do the same. Though I believe that you won’t turn your back on me, our priorities are similar, so why not offer assistance instead of facing one another head-on?" He sat on his throne, a delicate smile curving his lips at Caddel’s thoughtful demeanor.

"Is the reunion over?" Duncan’s voice brought Caddel back to the present, and he shifted back, making way for Duncan to study the chains that had been used to keep Ivan restrained to the vault. His eyebrows hung low in slight worry, whilst he took notice of Ivan’s arm.

"Your muscles are strained, for how long did you intend to keep pulling?" He shook his head with a sigh. This relative of his really lacked patience, anymore strenuous pull and he would be a man walking without any arms. Even his veins were popping out due to how long he had inflicted relentless pressure on them. Was he not aware that he was doing damage to himself??

"Can you get the chains off?" Ivan went straight to the point, and Duncan scowled at his ingratitude for him being here. When he was done studying the major points, he hummed.

"This will only take a minute, but I must warn, you are likely to experience a series of pain once I take them off. You’ve applied more pressure than necessary, and it could be dire if I take them off. Let your muscles relax–"

"I don’t care about what happens to me, take them off." Ivan’s persistence was unwavering, "I can’t afford to waste anymore time with this, I’m telling you to remove them or else I’ll pull hard again."

"Fine, but would it hurt you to listen to instructions for once?" Muttering those words beneath his tone, it barely lasted two minutes when he set Ivan free from those chains, and his earlier warning began to take effect.

Ivan’s muscles tightened up to his shoulder, and he could feel them throb in pain. It was no different from suffering from an intense muscle pull, but it was more severe. He clenched his jaw and closed his eyes for a moment, trying to stabilize the pain, but a sudden emptiness inside of him made his eyes snap open in urgency.

"Samantha?" His pupils automatically dilated at the feeling that crawled up to his heart... his little lamb needed him.
