Building a Safe Zone with My Harem In The Post-Apocalyptic World-Chapter 108: Drunken Boys
Gideon groaned as Kilian and Aaron dragged him into the small bar he had just bought from the system a day ago.
It came as a set, with a separate room for games or just relaxing with the people close to him, and the only reason he even bought it was because it had been ninety percent off at the time.
Every now and then, the Infinite Shop would suddenly become generous and throw massive discounts at specific items.
It was already bad enough that he had a fifty percent discount on his first five purchases through PayLater, which refreshed every week, but the system kept stacking more discounts on top of that for no clear reason, making it almost impossible for him to save any Love Coins.
He let out another sigh. "I really need to sell those scales," he muttered.
"Huh? Didn’t you already sell them to Jade?" Kilian said, holding a glass of scotch as he leaned back.
"And stop sighing already. We dug five holes, each three meters deep, in one day. That’s insane, especially with just shovels. You should be proud."
Gideon let out a small chuckle. "We? Most of that was me. You two were complaining the whole time and nearly collapsed. Look at your hands and feet, they’re still shaking."
"Well yeah, obviously. We’re a normal human being," Aaron replied, sprawled out on the soft white rug, lazily stretching his limbs as if he had completely melted into it.
"Normal? You’re literally lying on the rug," Gideon said, shaking his head.
The construction team had finally managed to finish the temporary housing for both the workers and the wounded. The digging for the water source and pump system was also done, along with the drainage groundwork.
Tomorrow, they would start laying the drainage pipes and, if possible, begin building the foundation for the communal bathrooms and faucets.
Even if the toilets were temporary, Gideon planned for the communal bathrooms and water points to remain in use long after the permanent housing was finished, which was why the drainage system had to come first.
"So what?" Aaron said, turning onto his side and hugging the rug like it was something precious.
"This is the most comfortable thing I’ve ever felt. You have no idea how terrible my bed is. I swear, even a horse stable would feel better."
"There’s still a lot to do tomorrow. Don’t get too wasted," Gideon said, running a hand through his hair. "Honestly, I’d rather just sleep. I feel tired..."
His sleep had already been messed up by Summer and Freya, and now he couldn’t even get a proper rest because of these two. He wasn’t physically exhausted, but his mind felt restless, and for some reason, that bothered him more.
It didn’t matter anyway. Kilian was already slightly drunk, taking another sip before speaking again.
"Just relax and enjoy it. This is real scotch. Not like that garbage beer in Climber Rift... actually, not just there, the whole world’s alcohol tastes like shit now."
"Seriously," Aaron added, tightening his hold on the rug. "I could live here forever. Just give me this floor and I’m good."
"You need to get drunk with us too, Gideon. Don’t you see how miserable you look? I get it, being rejected sucks. But you’ll get used to it. I mean... it’s Delilah, after all. She rejects everyone," Kilian said, pouring another drink for himself before sliding one toward Gideon.
"That’s where she got her title from, the Ice Queen. Impossible to melt," he added with a grin.
"I did not... There are plenty of beautiful women in this world. It’s not like it’s hard for me to get the ones I want," Gideon replied, trying to sound casual as he took the glass, though there was a hint of curiosity beneath his tone.
"But rejecting everyone, huh? Does she love her husband that much?"
"Hm... you should ask Jacob about that. He was their bodyguard during their last expedition, the one where Leon died," Aaron answered, leaning back in his chair.
"Leon? Who?"
"Oh, Delilah’s husband," Kilian said.
"Tall guy, handsome, hair like Freya and eyes like Summer. Good man too. Capable. Workaholic." He snorted lightly. "I mean, who the hell is a workaholic in a post-apocalyptic world?"
"Yeah, he was weird. Super nerdy," Aaron added. "Every time I saw him, he was reading something. On the street, in the pub, everywhere."
"Wow, Delilah really has a type," Gideon said dryly.
Maybe she preferred someone like that, someone smart, someone older. Gideon was just... average in intellectual matter.
And younger than even her oldest daughter. Maybe that was why she kept hesitating.
"But he was dangerous, you know," Kilian continued, taking a sip of his drink.
"He kept sticking his nose into things he shouldn’t. That’s why he was always getting into trouble. I didn’t like him when he worked with Freebound. He’d mess things up, and Delilah would be the one cleaning after him while he kept pushing forward anyway."
"Safe to say... it’s not that surprising he died."
Gideon raised a brow at that. Since Leon and Delilah had worked together, he already knew they were researchers, people who studied aberrants and things most others avoided.
"What kind of trouble are we talking about?" he asked.
Kilian hesitated for a moment before answering, his tone more restrained this time.
"Some things are better left unknown. But Leon didn’t think so. He wanted to know everything, even the things he shouldn’t, and that brought trouble to everyone around him."
Gideon noticed the hesitation in his eyes. Kilian wasn’t lying, but he was clearly holding something back, either because he couldn’t say it or because he didn’t want to.
That alone made Gideon wonder.
How much of what people knew in this world was actually true, and how much of it was just what they were allowed to know?
Still, from what he heard, Leon didn’t sound like a bad person, just someone too ambitious for his own good.
The problem was, ambition like that could go either way, and without knowing what he had been chasing, Gideon couldn’t tell if it had been for something better... or something far worse.
"Anyway, go to sleep, damn it," Gideon groaned, already tired of listening.
"Nah, I’m sleeping here... baby, I love Olive, but God, he needs to shut the fuck up," Kilian muttered as he dropped his head onto the table, clearly not planning to move anytime soon. 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞
"He’s a baby," Gideon said, glancing at him with a flat expression.
"I know," Kilian groaned again, dragging his voice as if the words themselves were exhausting.
"And I feel terrible saying that while leaving my wife alone with that monster. He’s not even a week old, and I swear he’s a descendant of the devil."
After that, Kilian kept rambling, his words starting to blur together as he complained about his baby one moment and then sounded oddly proud the next, completely lost in his drunken state.
Gideon could only rub the bridge of his nose, letting the noise fade into the background as his thoughts drifted elsewhere.
He couldn’t help but wonder if his own children would be like that too, and the thought immediately led him to Freya and Summer, one of them already pregnant, and another would be soon, maybe in a matter of weeks, maybe even sooner than that.
"Shit..."
He muttered under his breath as he filled his glass again and drank it in one go, letting the burn settle in his chest while he leaned back slightly, knowing that whatever came next, he might as well enjoy the quiet while it still lasted.
