The sharp sound of the slap lingered in the air long after her palm had left his face. Alex’s cheek had already turned a glaring shade of red. It was a good thing that he had braced himself in time, if not the slap would have hurt a lot more than now, but still the pain was so sharp. He winced, wondering whether her hands were actually made out of metal.
Nyx stood in front of him, with her hand slowly retracting. Her eyes which were usually calm and distant as a winter sea, now burned with a sharp intensity that could cut through steel.
"Do you have a death wish?" Her cold, icy voice rang out.
Alex opened his mouth to protest. He wanted to yell that it wasn’t his fault, that it was the devil of a system that made him do it... But he just couldn’t do it. Even if the system was a sadistic piece of work, he couldn’t exactly explain to a cold domineering woman that he had a magic system that made him stronger by... Well, seducing girls. And that it was the said system that made him kiss her.
So instead, he swallowed everything he wanted to say and forced a dry laugh while rubbing his aching cheek.
"Can you just relax," he said, trying to sound casual. "Didn’t you say I was your man? So as your man I figured that it would be good to clean the piece of food on my woman’s lip, and what better way to clean a food than a good kiss."
Nyx amber eyes narrowed. She looked at him with pure disbelief written all over her face. In all her years, she had never encountered anyone as shameless as the man standing in front of her. Just as she opened her mouth to reprimand him, her phone suddenly rang, cutting her words off. She didn’t move at first, and focused her gaze on Alex, weighing whether it was more important to answer the call or finish him right then and there.
The phone stopped for a second, then rang again.

Nyx finally exhaled softly through her nose, silently deciding that the idiot wasn’t worth immediate execution... for now. She reached into her bag and pulled out her phone.
"Speak," she ordered, as soon as she answered the call.
Alex leaned lightly against the counter, with a faint, smug smile at his lips. Usually people were saved by the bell, but he’d just been saved by a phone. He watched as Nyx’s expression subtly became more sharper, while listening to the other person’s frantic voice on the phone, discussing something important. With his good hearing he was able to get the gist of it.
<Boss, a Mr Yuka just came to discuss something with you. Even after I told him that you weren’t around, he insisted that he wanted to see you>
"Tell him to come back tomorrow. I don’t want to see anyone this evening." Nyx said in a tone filled with finality.
There was a hesitant pause on the other end before the voice responded again, slightly cautious this time.
<But Boss...he said it’s a message from the capital>
The word capital seemed to make Nyx go still. After a second or two she regained her composure
"I see. In that case, tell him that I’ll see him within an hour. In the meantime keep an eye on him until I return."
After saying that she cut the call, without waiting for a reply and turned her attention to Alex, uttering slowly.
"Next time do not ever kiss me without my permission... And don’t you dare forget about tomorrow. I won’t tolerate a second of lateness."
"Wait, I should not kiss you without your permission uhh..." He muttered softly while stroking his chin thoughtfully. "So does that mean I can kiss you next time, if I ask you nicely?"
Nyx ignored his idiotic rambling and moved towards the door with smooth, purposeful steps, wrapped her hand around the door knob, yanked it open and walked out. Alex almost let out a sigh of relief and collapsed into the bed.

"You fucking degenerate piece of shit. I ought to boil and butter you for what you just did. Couldn’t you have at least had a shred of sympathy and spared me that stupid mission."

Alex’s lips twitched.
"Are you crazy?! Don’t you even dare think about that stupid idea. After completing that insufferable mission and gaining a slap as reward, now you want to keep my actual reward... Sorry but no can do."

A soft glow instantly flooded the entire room as a bright blue panel popped out of nowhere.

Alex nodded his head with satisfaction, though the task was pretty stupid, he was still okay with the addition of two hundred coins. With this, at least he would be able to afford some pretty important things from his inventory, that is when they really mattered, afterall he wasn’t a wasteful person.
The soft glow lingered for a moment before gradually fading away leaving the room in its usual quiet state. Alex stretched his arms slightly and let out a long breath as he leaned back against the bed, staring at his favourite place, the ceiling, with a complicated expression on his face.
He had not visited Olivia in days now. He wondered if she was still thinking about their last encounter or if she was still angry at him for ignoring her after their steamy make out. He decided to pay her a visit tomorrow, after the business meeting and maybe complete his unfinished business.
’Hehe’ he thought with a lewd grin on his handsome face.
Then his thought drifted to Emily... who wanted the both of them to go out on a stupid date, it’s not like he was too keen on going with that bitch, but he wanted to use that opportunity to finally add her beautiful mother to his harem slot.

With a sigh, he pushed his mind out of all that, and thought about something more important. The people called awakened. He didn’t really know much about them, hell the only way he even found out that they existed was because of his fight with Nyx’s baby-faced bodyguard. Who happened to display strength and speed, far above that of a mundane human, bordering far into the line of being inhuman.
Plus the system had clearly told him that she had just gotten her power not too long and was not too used to it, which got him thinking. If she was already this strong then just how strong were others awakened, especially those who were already experts in their own right.
They must be extremely terrifying then. So that meant he had to be careful around the city, just in case of accidentally bumping into one, who might even be an expert in disguise.
"Hey system, what do you know about awakened? And is there a way I can avoid them if possible."
[I thought I told you all about that, before you went for your training?]
"yeah but I kind of forgot some things, plus from what I remember, you were not very specific."
[Ok listen closely. Awakened are basically group of people with physical strength far above that of humans, some are able to lift tanks with ease, while others can fly around with superhuman speed. So when each awakened human, newly awakens, they get a special ability that is specifically theirs alone, like the baby faced bodyguard’s own, whose special ability was to see some couple of seconds into the future, while others basically have lame abilities like, turning their body to slime or shooting out weak attacks. Now when an awakened newly awakens, he or she develops a core and to make their powers grow stronger and break to the next realm, they have to absorb energy, that goes by different names in different parts of the world, like qi, chakra, mana... You name it, but its main name is primordial essence. Think of it as the fuel that allows awakened to use their abilities]
