Chapter 54

Nyx, who had been silent all this while, stared at Alex with shock written all over her face, before she quickly hid it. She just couldn’t believe that the same man who could be reckless and annoying at times, was now the one asserting this kind of dominance.

For a brief moment, her gaze lingered on him, as though she was now seeing him in an entirely different light.

Across the table, the man with the tablet tightened his grip slightly. He looked clearly unsettled by the blatant display of power from the young man sitting next to Nyx. Aside from Nyx herself, this was the first time he was seeing such audacity in action.

Alex in the meanwhile, watched as Nyx leaned back in her chair, her expression back to that familiar calm indifference, but her eyes remained fixed on him for a moment longer, before she finally spoke.

"Since Alex has made it clear that he does not approve of the new app, then neither will I. That brings our combined vote to seventy four percent. The project is cancelled."

Everyone was more shocked by Nyx’s response than Alex’s audacity. They had expected her to try and intimidate the young shareholder by using her immense power, but here she was openly supporting him.

"However," Nyx continued. "Alex will also have to at least introduce another project we can use to replace the previous one. With it being nothing less than the former. I believe that should be fair?"

Mr Humphrey opened his mouth to protest, but one look from Nyx sent the words straight back into his throat. His eyes flickered between Nyx and Alex before he slowly leaned back into his seat with a defeated expression on his haughty face.

But the man with the tablet still tried to protest. He couldn’t watch such a profitable project go down, all because of some baseless allegations with no proof whatsoever.

"But Miss Nyx, we have already invested over twenty million dollars into this project!" He blurted out with desperation leaking into his voice. "Are we just going to cancel it now over... Over baseless accusations? It’s madness!"

"Sit down, Mr. Slekovich," Nyx commanded. "And do not talk back to me. If I find out that even half of what Alex said is true, then you will learn exactly why people don’t lie to me."

The man’s body trembled uncontrollably, before he finally took his seat. He unscrewed a bottle of water with shaky fingers and chugged it down to calm himself. It would be a lie to say he wasn’t scared, if anything, he was truly terrified to the max. This was Nyx! A woman with unfathomable power and if she ever manages to find out the truth, then he was as good as dead.

He stole a glance at Alex and fumed internally. It was all this brat’s fault. Everything could have gone smoothly if the brat hadn’t opened his mouth and exposed what he had worked so hard to hide. No! This boy was too dangerous. There was no need for such an unpredictable person to exist in this company. He could spoil all the plans he had been planning for years. He had to be eliminated.

The thought lingered in his mind, as he forced himself to steady his shaky fingers and lowered the water bottle back on the table. Outside he looked like an innocent man who had just been reprimanded, but inside, his dark twisted heart was already brimming with malicious intentions.

Alex, of course, was completely obvious to the murderous intent brewing across the table. Instead he was still reeling from the shock of Nyx support. Earlier, he had been prepared to stand his ground if the need arises, but her unexpected response left him dazed. He would be lying if he said he didn’t feel strangely touched by her unexpected response.

He cleared his thoughts of all that, and began to focus on the task she had just given him. Well coming up with an idea wasn’t too hard, after all there were tons of apps from the future that he knew would be beneficial to BluePeak. But the problem was which one of them could he pick, because he couldn’t pick all, or could he?

’Facebuk? Nah, already in the market. YuuTube? Ehen kinda what I had in mind but it’s already in the market. Oh what about Whatzapp...? No, too early. It just came out this year.’

Then it clicked.

’Wait...! There’s still one that would really fit this era, and would be really beneficial in the long run. But what was it again? Yes! Instaglam! If I remember correctly it came up in 2010. That’s like one year from now. So I don’t think they’ll mind if I borrow their ideas. Hehehe.’ He chuckled internally.

"Alright," Nyx began. "Since we’ve already discussed how to improve the company’s revenue and the partnership with whitmore corporation, I think it’s safe to say that we are finally don..."

"Forgive me, Miss Nyx for cutting in," Slekovich interrupted while adjusting his cuffs with a sneer on his face. "But I think the board will agree with me, if we hear what brilliant project Mr Alex is willing to use to replace the preexisting one... Surely it shouldn’t be too difficult for someone like Mr Alex."

Alex met his gaze with bored indifference but he sneered internally.

’This fool is so predictable. He is literally like all those cliche villian from those old novels I used to read from my colleages phone. Does he think I haven’t already prepared something great’

He knew that the idiot couldn’t rest for a single minute without trying to pressure him, especially after foiling his plans of putting Linkex in the market.

"Why thank you Mr Slekobitch." Alex said, intentionally insulting him. "As you all know, what’s currently a hot cake in the market especially in the area of technology is social media. And I don’t need to spell it out for you, how popular it is among a lot of people. So before you tell me that Linkex was also a social media app, you have to understand that it was literally a copy of another dominant force, and if we went along and uploaded the app to the market... Then we could be looking at some serious legal problems."

He paused, then continued.

"Besides, you’re all thinking too small. Social media isn’t only about messaging anymore. It’s more about attention. People don’t just want to text, they want to be seen... Now that’s why I spent the night thinking of what will have that wow factor that will hook the masses, and I came up with something better...

Now, what if instead of only messaging, an app could also have posting and watching of videos to serve as a source of entertainment. And not just watching videos but also you’ll have an area under your profile where you can follow a person to grow their reach, and see their contents. Think of the app as a clean platform where people post photos and short videos. While others follow them, watch them and engage. Now imagine how popular such an app would be when we introduce it into the market. Especially among teens and adults. Now this is going to be the future, and if we build it first, we are going to dominate the market."

Several of the shareholders nodded their heads with understanding, while some exchanged uncertain glances with each other. This time they no longer scoffed or dismissed him as they began thinking of how good that idea was.

One man whispered softly. "The idea that Mr Alex is proposing could work."

But Slekovich interjected.

"That sounds... Ambitious sir. But ambition alone doesn’t mean it will end up successful. What you’re describing would require a lot of new processes... And this isn’t something you can just put together because it sounds appealing."

Alex tilted his head slightly with an almost bored expression on his face and scoffed.

"Yeah that’s rich coming from a person, who was willing to push forward a product that could drag us into a huge lawsuit, potentially making us lose millions of dollars, simply because ’it looked appealing on the surface’." He air quoted the last part.

Slekovich’s jaw tightened so hard that his teeth clicked, but he didn’t respond. Alex had just struck where it hurts most.

Nyx, one the other hand who had been quietly observing him the whole time, finally spoke.

"So how long do you think this app would take, Alex?"

Alex didn’t hesitate.

"By my calculations it should take three months for a working version and six to dominate the initial market, that is if we move fast and market it correctly. But I think our programmers and developers should be able to give a more accurate time since they’re the one actually working on it. I’ve already done my part as a shareholder by giving that suggestion."

Nyx studied him for a moment longer while tapping her fingers lightly against the armrest of her chair. What he just said was better than what the R&D department had produced in years.

Most of all the idea sounded like it might actually be able to perform better than the previous project they had considered releasing around a few months from now. After making her decision, she gave him a small, almost imperceptible nod.

"Alright, share your ideas with the programmers so that we can develop the app in earnest. Now the meeting is dismissed..." She paused as everyone began to move out. "Oh and Alex? stay back after everyone is gone. I want to discuss something with you."
