Can I Still Be Your Heroine Even Though I'm Your Teacher?-Chapter 4Volume 2 .1 - Reflections in the Evening Calm
Reflections in the Evening Calm 1
After receiving a message from Tenjō-san that she had met up with Kaguya and they were heading home, I decided it was time for me to return as well.
“Here, give this to your stepsister as an apology. It was immature of me to act that way towards a junior high schooler.”
Akira had gone out of her way to purchase the clothes that Kaguya had forgotten to buy at the register and handed them to me.
“You really are a good person, aren’t you?”
My internal assessment of Kuhouin Akira shot up rapidly.
Despite her blunt appearance, she was compassionate and conscientious.
“Hey, Ririka also chipped in for half of it! Make sure you make up with your stepsister, okay?”
Mayuzumi-san was as lively as ever, and I was grateful for her thoughtfulness.
“Thank you both of you. I’ll make sure to deliver it.”
I packed the clothes they bought and the items I had purchased myself into my backpack.
“Make sure you hand it over in person. Don’t just send it by courier and settle things with a phone call or message.”
“That’s right. There’s meaning in making the effort to go there in person.”
“O-Okay. I’ll take that to heart.”
The two girls seemed to sense my reluctance and firmly tell me to do it.
To be honest, I was at a loss. I couldn’t fully understand Kaguya’s feelings.
I had no idea what she was thinking or how I should approach her.
If only our sibling fight had blown up so badly that I had an excuse not to visit home…
“Isn’t it part of being siblings that you can fight and then make up? I don’t know though, since I’m an only child.”
“Nikki, you can be so childish sometimes.”
And so, I found myself with no choice but to return to my family home to deliver the clothes to Kaguya and make amends.
I decided to give Kaguya a day to cool off before going back.
Giving her some time to calm down might make reconciliation easier.
“…Come to think of it, this is the first time Kaguya and I have really fought.”
Since it was Sunday, even if Kaguya went out, I could wait until nightfall at worst for her to return.
The next day dawned with a splendid clear sky, and the temperature was rising rapidly. It felt like midsummer, even though it was only May.
I finished my laundry and room cleaning in the morning.
The clothes should dry nicely in this weather.
“Good morning! It’s such nice weather, why don’t we go to the beach together? You’re going to come, right? You have to!”
Tenjō-san suddenly invited me to the beach as I opened the front door.
She was wearing sunglasses and had a dazzling smile.
Her enthusiasm was a bit too much like that of a gyaru.
She was in full throttle, seemingly unable to wait any longer to depart.
A large tote bag was placed at her feet, ready for an outing.
“…You’ve been quite active these two days in a row.”
“The value of a day off increases the more you become an adult. You’ll be an old lady before you know it if you laze around. Do you know how precious twenty-four free hours are to an adult? By the time you realize it, free time is not so easily available. That’s the biggest difference from your student days!”
She passionately preached about making the most of the weekend right at the entrance of my room.
It was all so sudden that I hadn’t yet caught up with her momentum.
“It’s tough being a working adult, huh? Wouldn’t it be better to take it easy and rest?”
“Playing is also a valid form of rest.”
“Then, wouldn’t it be more comfortable for you to invite some other friends?”
“My best friend can’t go with me today because she’s at a BBQ outdoor mixer.”
“Truly carnivorous, huh. So, what about going alone?”
“It’s awkward to go to an area swarming with couples by myself. Getting hit on is annoying too.”
“That’s true.”
My heart also feels restless. She was approached by some people just yesterday, so I’d be worried leaving Tenjō-san alone.
“But why the sudden urge to go to the beach? It’s almost noon.”
It seems a bit late to be heading to the beach.
“I wanted to make up for missing out during Golden Week. By the way, we’re heading to the Shonan Kamakura area, so we can easily make it a day trip.”
Tenjō-san seems insistent on going today.
The weather is perfect for an outing and it would be a waste to stay cooped up inside.
“Of course I’d be happy to go, but isn’t that against the Neighbor Agreement?”
While I want to agree, I can’t just casually ignore the rules we’ve set.
“A car is just a moving box, which means it’s broadly an extension of a room, right? The first clause of the Neighbor Agreement is that ‘The fact that we are neighbors is a secret just between the two of us’. We’re not breaking anything.”
“That’s quite a forceful interpretation.”
The main premise isn’t violated as long as our relationship isn’t discovered by a third party.
In fact, yesterday was far riskier. Kaguya, Akira, and Mayuzumi-san were all together.
It could have easily been revealed that Tōmi Rei’s real name is Tenjō Reiyu if we weren’t careful and that she’s our homeroom teacher.
Compared to that, today’s trip is safer.
“I’ll be spending today as Tōmi Rei. Going out with your neighbor should be fine.”
Tōmi Rei, how convenient.
It’s a great idea considering it was just a name that she came up with on a whim.
“Well, it should be fine as long as it’s not too close.”
It’s unlikely we’ll run into classmates iof we’re traveling by car to a distant place.
Moreover, I owe her a lot for leaving Kaguya in her care yesterday.
“I’ve already booked and paid for rental car. Come on, Yuunagi-kun, come with me. Please.”
She adds it as if to seal the deal.
Clasping her hands in front of her face, she looks up at me with a pleading gaze that’s hard to reject.
“Well, if you insist that much, Tenjō-san…”
No man could refuse when asked like this.
I may appear reluctant, but inside, I’m cheering with a standing ovation.
