Cannon Fodder in an Era Drama — I Survive with Acting-Chapter 149: I Trust You
Song Qingya sat beside her and asked softly, "Guo Ying, how are you feeling now? Are you any better?"
As she spoke, she reached out and felt Guo Ying’s forehead, checking if the fever had gone down a bit.
"Qingya, I’m much better, thank you."
Guo Ying looked at her, her eyes full of gratitude. "It’s just... I’m a little worried about Cheng Peng."
Her gaze lost focus as she stared blankly at the ceiling. "He’s been gone for a day and a night. Do you think something happened to him? Could he have been... caught by those people?"
"Don’t be afraid. Ajin will handle it. Cheng Peng is with him; nothing will happen to him."
Song Qingya squeezed her hand and comforted her gently.
"Ajin is always reliable. He would never let his men take risks for nothing. You have to trust him, and you have to trust Cheng Peng—he’s a clever man who knows how to protect himself."
"Mm, I believe you."
Guo Ying nodded, but her brow remained furrowed, creasing even more tightly.
She raised a hand and pressed it lightly over her heart, as if a stone were weighing it down.
"I don’t know what’s wrong, but I’ve felt so anxious. My heart has been pounding non-stop since last night. The feeling... it’s like something terrible is about to happen, but I can’t put my finger on what it is."
Song Qingya’s heart sank.
She had the same premonition, like a dark cloud had quietly settled over her heart, refusing to disperse.
But she hadn’t said anything, for fear of scaring Guo Ying.
She suppressed the intrusive thoughts and forced a smile. "It’s nothing, don’t overthink it. You just had a high fever, so it’s natural for your nerves to be on edge. It’s probably just because your body hasn’t fully recovered that you feel so anxious."
She gently patted Guo Ying’s hand. "The most important thing for you right now is to rest and get your strength back. By the time you wake up, Cheng Peng might already be back with good news. Don’t let your mind run wild, okay?"
After leaving the hospital, Song Qingya’s heart was heavy.
Although she had comforted Guo Ying, she couldn’t ignore the faint premonition herself.
At some point, dark clouds had gathered, and the sky grew dim, mirroring her mood.
When she got home, the first thing she saw was a jeep parked by the door.
It was an old, army-green jeep, its body spattered with mud. It had clearly come from a long journey.
The door was open, and the ground around the tires was splashed with muddy water.
Mr. Fei was being helped out, slowly easing himself down from the vehicle.
"Dad!"
Song Qingya hurried over to support him.
She supported Mr. Fei’s arm with one hand and gently steadied his back with the other, afraid he might stumble and fall.
Liu Li stared nervously at her stomach. "Qingya, slow down! Be careful not to fall!"
She quickly got out of the car and grabbed Song Qingya’s arm. "You’re carrying a child now, you can’t be so reckless! If anything were to happen, how could I face your mother?"
Mr. Fei coughed a couple of times and added, "That’s right. Things are different for you now, you can’t overdo it."
Although he was thin and frail, just beginning to recover and walking with a slight tremor, his spirits were good. His voice was resonant and steady. "The thought is enough. I can still walk; you don’t need to go all out like this."
"Dad, Mom, I’m really fine. I feel great."
Song Qingya smiled to reassure them, her voice clear and bright, her eyes crinkling at the corners.
She straightened her back and deliberately took a couple of steps to show off her condition. "See? There’s a spring in my step, the baby is stable, and the doctor says everything is normal. How about I carry you inside?"
She said it half-jokingly, even bending over as if to hoist him onto her back.
"You silly girl, stop that nonsense!"
Mr. Fei pretended to glare at her, but the wrinkles at the corners of his eyes relaxed into a smile.
He raised a hand and patted her shoulder lightly, his tone a mix of affection and exasperation. "I can walk by myself; I don’t need you to carry me! Besides, what if you throw out your back bending over like that? This old man couldn’t bear the guilt!"
Song Qingya knew he was just worried about her, so she carefully supported him as they walked into the house. 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚
"Dad, lie down for a moment. I’ll check your pulse."
She helped Mr. Fei sit down slowly on the bed, her movements gentle, afraid of touching a sore spot.
"Dad, lean against the pillows. Don’t try to hold yourself up."
Mr. Fei glanced at his daughter-in-law, and in the end, said no more, obediently lying down.
Song Qingya placed her fingers on his wrist, feeling the weak, thready pulse.
She closed her eyes, her expression focused, quietly sensing the fluctuations and rhythm of his pulse.
A moment later, she slowly withdrew her hand, her brow furrowed slightly.
His pulse was too weak—it was intermittent, deep, and faint. It was the clear result of a long-term illness that had greatly depleted his vital energy, leaving him deficient in both qi and blood.
"Dad, this illness needs proper care and time to heal. We can’t delay any longer."
She suppressed the unease in her heart and managed a smile. "I’ll go get your medicine now. If you take it on schedule and get plenty of rest, you’ll be better in no time."
She spoke with a smile, her tone light and casual.
"Qingya, I’ll go with you."
Liu Li immediately stood up.
She stared at her daughter-in-law’s small baby bump, her heart clenching.
Song Qingya gently shook her head and pressed the back of her mother-in-law’s hand to reassure her.
"Mom, you should stay and take care of Dad. He needs someone with him right now. I’ll be right back. The pharmacy isn’t far, nothing will happen."
"Absolutely not!"
Liu Li’s tone was firm, her voice rising sharply. "You’re pregnant. How can we let you run to the pharmacy alone? What if you get tired on the way, or trip and fall? Who would be responsible?"
Her gaze was stern; she was clearly furious.
Mr. Fei nodded slightly, his voice low but firm.
"That’s right. Let your mother go with you; it would put my mind at ease. You’re carrying a heavy burden, so don’t overdo it."
Song Qingya pressed her lips together. Seeing the worried looks in her in-laws’ eyes, her heart softened.
She knew arguing was pointless, so she nodded reluctantly.
"Alright. Mom and I will go together, and we’ll be back soon."
The two of them had just stepped out of the house when, before they got far, they heard familiar footsteps behind them.
Song Chenglu chose that moment to walk in.
She had dressed up for the occasion, wearing a pink blouse.
She walked lightly to the bedside and bent down slightly.
"Uncle, are you feeling any better? Are you still uncomfortable? Is there any pain?"
Mr. Fei slowly turned his head and shot her a cold look.
’This woman is devious. She caused chaos in this house, targeted Qingya at every turn, and now she’s back putting on an act. It’s obvious she’s a troublemaker who won’t let anyone have a moment’s peace.’
"Leave. Get out."
Song Chenglu froze, the smile on her face stiffening instantly.
She hadn’t expected Mr. Fei to be so blunt, unwilling to even hear another word.
"Uncle..."
She bit her lower lip, the rims of her eyes turning red as her voice trembled:
"I know you have a poor opinion of me and that I’ve disappointed you in the past, but I sincerely want to help. I was immature back then. I made mistakes that hurt the family and broke your heart..."
She paused, taking a deep breath as if to suppress her emotions.
"But I truly regret it now."
