Chapter 20: Chapter 20: Your Medals and Glory

A perfect, unspoken understanding formed between them.

That evening, after all the lights in the room were turned off, everything was plunged into darkness.

Such a dark environment was perfect for doing... certain things.

When Song Qingya had seen the scars on his body during the day, a million questions had surfaced in her mind.

But she had forced herself to hold back all day. Finally, as they were getting ready for bed, she couldn’t resist any longer. "Fei Jin, when did you get all these scars?"

Fei Jin’s voice faltered as he seemed to get lost in his memories. Then, he said faintly, "It’s all in the past. There’s nothing worth mentioning."

Fei Jin never spoke of his own heroic deeds.

Song Qingya searched the original owner’s memories but couldn’t find any useful clues.

All the original owner’s memories held was a single, hazy impression.

It had happened by chance. Fei Jin had just gotten out of the shower.

As he was coming out of the bathroom, the original owner had opened the door and accidentally seen his bare torso.

The original owner had let out a scream.

"Why do you have so many scars?"

Fei Jin’s expression had faltered for a moment, but he’d said nothing, only silently closing the door.

After that, the two of them never mentioned it again.

’It’s probably because the memories are unpleasant,’ Song Qingya guessed. ’That’s why Fei Jin doesn’t want to talk about it.’

Song Qingya sighed and gently wrapped her arms around him.

Fei Jin stiffened. He felt her gentleness but didn’t push her away, simply standing there motionlessly.

"What are you doing?"

Fei Jin’s voice held a trace of confusion.

"I just want you to know that I’m not afraid of your scars."

Song Qingya said, enunciating each word clearly.

"You don’t have to hide anything from me. They’re a part of you, and I accept all of it."

They had been married for less than three months.

But many small misunderstandings had already grown between them, and erasing them completely would not be easy.

But Song Qingya didn’t see it as a hassle. In fact, she relished the challenge.

She found herself being especially patient, especially when it came to a man who fascinated her so deeply.

Fei Jin’s throat bobbed.

He felt the firm pressure of her hands against his back.

He knew this was her way of showing him that none of it mattered to her.

This was the first time anyone had ever said something like that to him.

Before her, no one had been able to face his scars so calmly. No one had ever touched them so naturally.

In truth, Fei Jin didn’t consider the scars a big deal.

He was one of the lucky ones.

At least he had survived the battlefield. Many of his comrades never made it back.

He had run through the rain countless times, struggled amidst the roar of artillery, all to defend the peace.

For the sake of peace, someone had to make sacrifices, and Fei Jin had never been afraid to be one of them.

Whenever he thought of the comrades who would never return to their families, he would remind himself that their sacrifices were meaningful.

It was only when he saw the look of fear on Song Qingya’s face after she’d seen his scars... only then would he occasionally wonder, ’Am I really that horrifying?’

Fei Jin didn’t really care what other people thought of him.

But when the wife he had married, the person who was supposed to be the closest to him in the world, also said his scars were frightening, Fei Jin could no longer ignore it.

In that moment, his heart had filled with dejection.

But now, Song Qingya was gently tracing his scars with her fingertips.

"These aren’t scars. They’re your medals. Your honor."

Those words sent a jolt through Fei Jin’s heart.

Pulling her tightly into his arms, Fei Jin felt a sense of peace he had never known before.

’Fei Jin had never thought he’d done anything particularly special.’

’He had joined the army when he was young and hovered on the brink of life and death countless times, all for the sake of his convictions.’

’During those days, he had spent countless nights searching for a sliver of light in the darkness.’

And yet, hearing someone say these things to him, he couldn’t help but be moved.

Fei Jin’s voice was a little hoarse, but he still spoke the words of gratitude with sincerity.

"Thank you, Qingya."

"No."

Song Qingya shook her head.

She raised a finger and gently pressed it against his dry lips.

Her eyes gazed at him quietly.

"We are the ones who should be thanking you."

’Living in the twenty-first century, she’d once heard a saying.’

’It was said that the older generations had already fought all our wars, shed all the necessary blood, and endured all the requisite hardships to secure the peace we enjoy today.’

Back then, the phrase hadn’t meant much to Song Qingya.

But after seeing the marks on Fei Jin’s body, she finally, truly understood its meaning.

From that moment on, she realized she was truly starting to fall for Fei Jin.

It wasn’t just because of his looks or his physique, but because of his unwavering conviction.

"Let’s get some rest. You have to be up early for training tomorrow."

Although Song Qingya really wanted to do something more intimate, she knew that rushing things never ended well.

She could take things slow. It was better not to scare him.

She gently took Fei Jin’s hand.

A large hand gently covered her eyes.

It blocked out all the light, leaving her in total darkness.

Fei Jin whispered from above her.

"Good night."

A smile touched Song Qingya’s lips as she replied in kind.

"Good night. Dream of me, okay?"

With that, she fell into a peaceful sleep, completely oblivious to Fei Jin tossing and turning beside her, unable to rest.

Gazing at Song Qingya’s peaceful, sleeping face, Fei Jin felt a storm of complex emotions.

’She was such a good woman, and he had misunderstood her so completely.’

His heart filled with guilt and self-reproach, and he silently vowed to cherish their relationship more.

Her health had always been poor.

And she was constantly bullied by her family.

It was perfectly normal for her to throw a little tantrum now and then.

But he had never shown her enough understanding or patience...

If they could somehow avoid divorcing, Fei Jin hoped he could do his best to make it up to her.

He wanted to do everything in his power to fulfill her every wish.

He would do anything for her, as long as it was within his power.

He would spend the rest of his life loving her, cherishing her.

But the words had already been said. It was all irreversible now.

Since he had already proposed divorce, their time together was running out.

...

Sleep was impossible for him that night.

The next day, Song Qingya noticed the faint dark circles under Fei Jin’s eyes. Puzzled, she asked, "What were you up to last night? Didn’t you sleep?"

Fei Jin quickly denied it. "No, I just had a few dreams."

His denial was so quick it struck Song Qingya as odd.

’What was that about so early in the morning?’

’Did he go out for a run or something?’

Fei Jin didn’t dare to meet her gaze, fearing he would instantly recall the images from his dreams the night before.

Those heart-pounding, unforgettable images. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦

’It was just too wild...’

He rarely used to think about such things.

But ever since Song Qingya had returned from Qi City, he found a certain impulse within him becoming more and more difficult to suppress.
