Captive Mate BL-Chapter 649: - - -
A couple of hours into the event, almost all the guests had arrived. There was still some time until midnight, and Jael doubted that Asher would be getting out of the event anytime soon.
And as if on cue, Jael’s phone rang. He hadn’t returned to the gazebo, constantly on the move. He had a feeling that Asher had spitefully sent rich heiresses after him, and he was uninterested in bumping into more of them.
"Need something?" He asked right away, prepared to turn Asher down.
"Yeah, come in. We’ll be leaving soon." Asher said, much to his surprise.
"Right," He muttered, hanging up.
It wasn’t until he was walking through the club that he realized that Asher could just be fucking with him. But he could already see his grinning boss, he might as well see it through.
"Are you really leaving?" He leaned down to speak directly in Asher’s ear.
Asher’s piercings caught the light as he turned to his second-in-command, ignoring the other guests at the table. "Yeah. I just need you to sneak me out..."
As they whispered to each other, Rae stood on the sidelines, green eyes scanning the club for the heiress who had approached them at the gazebo.
As he looked around, he caught a familiar glint and his body moved on instinct.
Despite the music and conversation filling the classy club, the sound of a muffled gunshot going off was loud enough to catch attention.
Rae was the first to get moving, stepping in front of Jael out of reflex. He moved before processing that the guest that the glint had come from was staring right at Jael.
The bullet hit his right arm, the realization that they had actually been aiming for Jael impacting just as hard as the bullet lodged in his upper arm.
Green eyes flashed as he charged forward, barely feeling the pain in his upper arm as he launched over a table, grabbing a whiskey bottle as he did.
Jael palmed a gun as soon as the gunshot went off, freezing momentarily when Rae suddenly took off. The Alpha had remained right by his side the entire time, regardless of where he went.
"What the fuck?" Asher muttered, looking in disbelief.
Before panic could set in, Rae had already cracked the bottle over the attacker’s head, amber liquid splashing out dangerously with shards of glass.
The jagged part that was left after the bottle broke, ended up in the assailant’s throat, causing some of the women around to scream in fright.
"Rae," Jael said calmly, his gun trained in his direction.
Rae got off the person he had attacked, bloody and soaked with liquor. He was terribly calm for what had just happened.
"Macklemore?" A few people spoke up.
The lights had come on after the shot went off, the club much quieter at the unknown danger.
The renowned estate attorney was twitching and bleeding out in his three-piece suit, not given the chance to even speak before he was killed.
"He has a gun," One of Asher’s men spoke up. A couple of them had instantly closed in, their hard eyes trained on the young Alpha.
The bloody gun easily came up, and after a quick check, it was easy to figure out that it was the exact gun that had been shot.
Jael didn’t put his gun away, his attention never left the gang boss. "Come over here."
The men moved quickly, and in no time, the dead attorney had been carted off, the club workers quickly cleaning up the blood and whiskey, it was like nothing had happened.
Rae walked over, his poker face solid as he stared right into the gun still trained on him.
Jael’s gun pressing into his throat made him gasp, a shiver going down his spine.
"Didn’t I tell you to keep a weapon on you?" He scolded flatly, dark eyes scanning him over.
A gunshot had definitely gone off, yet no one seemed to be injured, it made Jael grit his teeth.
His gun drifted over to the gang’s boss’s arm that was completely covered in blood, slightly nudging it.
"Fuck," Rae cursed, flinching.
"Yeah, we’re leaving." He turned to Asher, snatching his Mafia King up by his fur coat.
Asher was just happy to leave, still a little confused about what had happened.
Jael also grabbed Rae’s wrist, leading the way out as the lights dimmed once again, the music picking up.
"Don’t jump in front of bullets again," He kept scolding when they got to the car, opening he passenger door to toss Rae in.
"The kid got shot?" Asher found himself asking, already seated in the backseat, eager to leave.
Jael’s expression grew darker - it was more apt to say that Rae had taken the bullet meant for him.
"It’s just in my arm, I’ll be alright." Rae shrugged casually like it wasn’t a big deal.
Asher wore a look of approval, "You’re pretty fast on your feet," He complimented.
Not only had the kid caught sight of the gun, but he had also minimized the damage and taken out the attacker before anyone realized what was going on - he was pretty good.
Getting a compliment from Mafia King Asher was an accomplishment, but he couldn’t focus on it. His wary gaze drifted to Jael, who hadn’t said a word after getting into the car.
"I’ll keep a weapon on me next time," He murmured contritely.
This was the first time he was seeing Jael genuinely upset, he didn’t like it one bit.
In the backseat, Asher had already moved on from the conversation, texting his mate up to find out if he had gone to bed yet.
Macklemore’s death was going to ruffle some feathers, but his attack had been seen by so many witnesses that nothing could be done about it.
Jael shot a look at the Alpha that hadn’t even bothered to tie up his injury, his expression darkening even further at the genuine panic in those green eyes.
Rae clamped his lips shut, he couldn’t promise that he wouldn’t jump in front of another bullet for Jael, so he said nothing more.
