Chapter 20: The First Near Miss

Rain fell in sheets. It turned the streets of Neo Ashford into mirrors. Reflections of neon signs shattered on the wet asphalt. The air smelled of ozone and wet concrete.

Kaito ran.

His boots splashed through puddles. His breath came in short, sharp bursts. The bandage on his hand throbbed. Akira’s burn was not fully healed. It pulled when he clenched his fist.

Left. Kuro’s voice was urgent. It went left. Into the alley behind the bookstore.

Kaito turned. He skidded on the wet ground. He caught himself against a brick wall.

The entity stood at the end of the alley. It was large. Seven feet tall. Its skin looked like cracked porcelain. Blue light leaked from the fissures. Claws dragged on the ground, sparking against the stone.

A Marked class. Stronger than a Wanderer. Smarter than a Drifter. It had hunted before.

It turned. Its face was blank. No eyes. No mouth. Just cracks.

It shrieked. The sound shattered a nearby window. Glass rained down.

Kaito did not hesitate. He drew the Jack of Clubs.

Kaito said, Akira.

Light flashed. Blue armor materialized. The ronin spirit stood beside Kaito. His hand rested on his katana. His mask faced the monster.

Akira said, Honorable foe.

The entity lunged. Fast. Too fast for its size.

Akira drew his sword. Steel met claw. Sparks flew. The impact shook the ground. Akira slid back two feet. His boots carved grooves in the pavement.

Akira said, Strong. Very strong.

Kaito drew the King of Fangs.

Kaito said, Fenrir. Flank.

The wolf exploded into existence. He howled. The sound amplified the rain. He circled the entity. He looked for an opening.

The entity swung. Akira blocked. The force knocked Akira to one knee.

Akira said, I cannot hold forever.

Kaito stepped forward. He raised the Ace of Spades.

Kaito said, Kuro. Shadow bind.

Shadows erupted from the walls. They wrapped around the entity’s legs. They tightened. The monster roared. It thrashed. The shadows frayed.

Kuro said, It is breaking free! Hurry!

Kaito merged. Partial merge. Shadow energy flowed into his arm. His hand turned black. Claws extended from his fingers.

He jumped. He aimed for the chest. For the core where the blue light pulsed brightest.

The entity saw him. It twisted. It freed one arm. It swiped.

Claws tore through Kaito’s jacket. They grazed his ribs. Pain flared. Hot. Sharp.

Kaito gritted his teeth. He did not stop. He drove his shadow claw into the chest.

Blue light exploded. Silence followed.

The entity crumbled. Porcelain shards fell to the ground. They dissolved into dust. The rain washed it away.

Kaito landed. He stumbled. He leaned against the wall. Blood soaked his shirt beneath the jacket.

Akira sheathed his sword. He faded into the card.

Fenrir whined. He nudged Kaito’s leg. He faded too.

Kuro remained. A wisp of smoke near Kaito’s ear.

Kuro said, Sloppy. You almost died.

Kaito coughed. He spat blood onto the wet ground.

Kaito said, Alive.

Kuro said, Barely.

Kaito checked his watch. Three minutes. The fight lasted three minutes.

He looked at the alley. Scorch marks blackened the bricks. The window was shattered. Glass littered the ground. The smell of sulfur was overwhelming.

He could not leave it like this. Not here. Three blocks from the school. Students walked this way home.

Kaito closed his eyes. He focused. He pulled on the residual energy. He forced the scorch marks to fade. He used wind from Zephyr’s card unsummoned, just a whisper of power to scatter the glass into the gutter.

It was not perfect. The bricks were still stained. The window was still broken. But the supernatural residue was gone. The smell was mostly masked by the rain.

Kuro said, Good enough. Go. Before someone sees.

Kaito pushed off the wall. He limped toward the main street. He pulled his hood low. He pressed his hand against his ribs. Pain shot through his side.

He reached the corner. He stopped. He listened.

Footsteps approached. Light. Rhythmic. Familiar.

Hana turned the corner. She held an umbrella. Yellow. Bright against the grey rain.

She walked slowly. She looked at the ground. She looked at the buildings.

She stopped ten feet from Kaito. She looked at the alley entrance. She looked at the bookstore window. Shattered.

She looked at Kaito.

Her eyes widened. She saw the tear in his jacket. She saw the blood seeping through the fabric near his waist. She saw the mud on his shoes. She saw the exhaustion in his posture.

Kaito froze. He had no excuse ready. No lie prepared.

Hana took a step forward. She stopped. She looked at the alley again. Then back at him.

Her expression changed. Confusion. Then realization. Then something else. Fear? No. Understanding.

She opened her mouth. She closed it.

She looked at his eyes. She searched for an explanation.

Kaito waited. His heart hammered against his ribs. If she asked. If she screamed. If she ran.

Hana lowered her gaze. She looked at her own shoes. She adjusted her grip on the umbrella.

Hana said, Rain is heavy.

Kaito said, Yes.

Hana said, Window broke. Storm maybe.

Kaito said, Maybe.

Hana looked up. Her eyes were dark. Serious. She knew it was not the storm. She knew the scorch marks were not lightning. She knew the blood was not from falling.

But she did not say it.

Hana said, You are hurt.

Kaito said, Fine.

Hana stepped closer. She reached out. She did not touch him. She hovered her hand near his arm.

Hana said, Do not lie. Not now.

Kaito said, Okay. Hurt.

Hana nodded. Once. She accepted the truth without demanding the source.

Hana said, Home. Now.

Kaito said, Walk you first.

Hana shook her head. She said, No. You go. I go other way. Faster.

Kaito hesitated. He wanted to protect her. To walk her home. But he was bleeding. He was weak. If another entity came...

Kaito said, Safe?

Hana said, Yes. Main road. People everywhere. You go. Hide. Heal.

She turned. She did not wait for an answer. She walked past him. She did not look at the alley again. She did not look at the blood.

She walked into the rain. Her yellow umbrella bobbed away.

Kaito watched her go. He waited until she turned the corner. Until she was safe.

Then he slumped against the wall. He slid down to the ground.

Kuro said, She saw.

Kaito said, Yes.

Kuro said, She said nothing.

Kaito said, Yes.

Kuro said, Smart girl. Too smart.

Kaito closed his eyes. The pain was overwhelming. He pressed his hand harder against his ribs. Warm blood coated his fingers.

Kaito said, Go home.

He stood up. He stumbled. He started walking. Toward the Grey District. Toward the shadows. Toward safety.

The rain washed the blood from his pants. It diluted the trail.

He reached his apartment. He climbed the stairs. He unlocked the door.

Inside, he collapsed on the floor. He did not make it to the bed.

Ember flickered into existence. She looked small. Worried.

Ember said, Oh no. Oh no. You are red. Too much red.

Kaito said, Heal.

Ember placed her hands on his wound. Warmth spread. Fire that did not burn. It cauterized. It knit flesh.

It hurt. Kaito bit his lip. He did not scream.

Akira’s voice came from the card. He said, You fought well. For a human.

Kaito said, Thanks.

Kuro said, Rest. The girl knows. The secret is thinning.

Kaito closed his eyes. He thought about Hana’s face. The way she looked at the scorch marks. The way she chose silence.

Kaito said, She knows.

Kuro said, What will you do?

Kaito said, Wait.

He drifted into sleep. The pain faded. The warmth of Ember remained.

Outside, the rain continued. It washed the city clean. But some stains did not wash away. Some truths remained.

Hana knew.

And she said nothing.

That was more dangerous than any monster.
