Cards Of The Silent King-Chapter 26: Ryota’s Question
The cafeteria was loud. The noise was a physical weight. It pressed against Kaito’s temples. It settled behind his eyes. He sat at the usual table. The plastic tray was cold. The food was untouched. Steam rose from the broth. It vanished into the air.
Kaito kept his hands still. They wanted to shake. He clasped them together under the table. He hid the tremor. He looked at the table surface. The laminate was scratched. White lines in the grey. He counted them. One. Two. Three.
Ryota sat across from him. Ryota was talking. He was always talking. His hands moved. He knocked over a salt shaker. He caught it before it fell. He laughed. The laugh was loud. It cut through the background noise.
Ryota said, I am telling you. The vending machine on the second floor is rigged. It eats coins. It eats specific coins. I tested it. I used ten yen. It worked. I used fifty yen. It ate it. It is discriminating. It has preferences.
Jin sat beside Kaito. Jin was eating quietly. He looked up. He looked at Ryota. He looked at Kaito. His eyes were calm. He knew. He knew about the night. He knew about the four cracks. He knew about the exhaustion.
Jin said, It is a machine. It does not have preferences.
Ryota said, Everything has preferences. Even machines. Even walls. Even cracks in the sidewalk.
Kaito did not look up. He focused on the steam. It twisted. It faded. He felt the eyes on him. Ryota’s eyes. Jin’s eyes. Hana’s eyes.
Hana sat beside Ryota. She was holding a cup of tea. She was not drinking. She was watching Kaito. She knew something was wrong. She did not know everything. She knew enough. She had seen the garden. She had seen the seal.
Hana said, Eat something. The broth is getting cold.
Kaito said, Later.
Hana said, Now is better.
Kaito said, Okay.
He picked up the spoon. His hand was steady. He forced it. He lifted the broth. He drank. It was hot. It burned his throat. He welcomed the pain. It was real. It grounded him.
Kuro’s voice spoke from the card in his pocket. The Ace of Spades was warm. It vibrated against his rib.
Kuro said, You look like death. They can see it. You are not hiding it well.
Kaito said, Know.
Kuro said, The loud one is watching. He is not looking at your face. He is looking at your hands. He is looking at your shoulders. He is counting the tension. He is smarter than he acts.
Kaito said, He acts loud.
Kuro said, It is a cover. Like your silence. Like his noise. Different methods. Same goal. Keep the world at a distance. Do not underestimate him.
Kaito put the spoon down. He rested his hands on his lap. He stopped the shake. He looked at Ryota. Ryota was still talking. He was talking about the student council. He was talking about the weather. He was talking about nothing.
Kaito listened. The words blurred. They became sound. White noise. Like the rain. Like the hum of a crack. He focused on Ryota’s face. Ryota was smiling. The smile did not reach his eyes.
Ryota stopped talking. The silence was sudden. The cafeteria noise rushed in. A tray clattered. Someone shouted. Ryota did not look away. He leaned forward. He rested his elbows on the table. He clasped his hands.
Ryota said, Are you okay.
The question was quiet. It was not loud. It was not funny. It was not part of the bit. It was heavy. It landed on the table between them. It sat there. It waited.
Kaito did not answer immediately. He looked at Ryota. He saw the concern. It was not pity. It was not curiosity. It was loyalty. It was solid. It was real.
Kaito said, I’m fine.
Ryota said, That’s not what I asked.
Kaito looked away. He looked at the window. The sky was grey. Clouds moved fast. Wind pushed them. The glass was cold. He could feel the cold from here.
Jin stopped eating. He put his chopsticks down. He watched. He did not speak. He knew this moment belonged to them. Hana stopped holding her cup. She held her breath. She waited.
Ryota said, I know you say you are fine. You say it every day. You say it when you bleed. You say it when you sleep standing up. You say it when you disappear for three days. I hear you. I listen. I know the words. But I am asking about the rest. The part you do not say.
Kaito said, Nothing to say.
Ryota said, There is always something. Everyone has something. Even you. Especially you. You carry it in your shoulders. You carry it in your eyes. You carry it in the way you sit. Like you are waiting for the ceiling to fall. Like you are holding it up.
Kaito said, Not holding.
Ryota said, Then what. Bracing. Preparing. Waiting. Pick a word. Any word. Just do not say fine. Fine is a lie. Fine is what people say when they want you to stop looking. I am not stopping. I am not looking away.
Kaito looked back at him. He saw the friend. He saw the boy who talked about vending machines. He saw the boy who brought coffee. He saw the boy who waited outside in the rain. He saw the loyalty. It was unconditional. It was dangerous.
Kuro said, He is close. Too close. He does not know the truth. But he knows the shape of it. He is tracing the edges. Be careful.
Kaito said, Know.
Kaito took a breath. He filled his lungs. He exhaled slowly. He looked at his hands. They were still. For now.
Kaito said, Tired.
Ryota said, Okay. Tired. I can work with tired. Tired is real. Tired is fixable. Sleep helps. Food helps. Friends help. You do not have to tell me why. You do not have to tell me what. Just tell me if you are still here. If you are still with us.
Kaito said, Here.
Ryota said, Good. That is all I need. That is enough.
Ryota leaned back. He picked up his chopsticks. He picked up a piece of tempura. He ate it. He chewed. He swallowed. He smiled. The smile reached his eyes this time. It was lighter. It was relieved.
Ryota said, Also. The vending machine. I think it is possessed. By a spirit. A hungry spirit. That likes fifty yen coins. We should exorcise it.
Kaito said, No.
Ryota said, Fine. Be boring. Keep your coins. Let the spirit starve. See if I care.
Hana exhaled. She picked up her cup. She drank. She looked at Kaito. Her eyes were warm. She nodded. Once. Small.
Jin picked up his chopsticks. He resumed eating. He said nothing. He did not need to. The tension had broken. The moment had passed. The truth remained hidden. The care remained visible.
Kaito picked up his spoon. He ate the broth. It was cold now. He did not mind. He ate the rice. He ate the fish. He finished the tray.
Zephyr’s voice whispered in his ear. She was riding the air currents near the ceiling. She was invisible. She was watching.
Zephyr said, He is good. The loud one. He sees more than the quiet one. He sees more than the bright one. He sees the cracks in the armor. He does not try to fix them. He just notes them. He stands beside them.
Kaito said, Know.
Zephyr said, Keep him. Do not push him away. He is an anchor. You drift. You float. You get lost in the shadows. He ties you to the ground. He ties you to the lunch table. He ties you to the vending machine. You need that.
Kaito said, Maybe.
Zephyr said, Not maybe. Yes. You are human. You need humans. You need the noise. You need the stupid questions. You need the friends who do not know the truth but know the weight.
Kaito put the tray aside. He stood up. The others stood up. They walked to the trash bins. They threw away the waste. They walked to the door.
The hallway was crowded. Students pushed past. Bags bumped. Voices rose. Kaito walked in the middle. Ryota walked beside him. He talked about a movie. He talked about the plot holes. He talked about the special effects.
Kaito listened. He let the words wash over him. He let the noise fill the silence. He did not have to speak. He did not have to explain. He just had to be here.
Ryota said, Hey. Kaito.
Kaito said, Yes.
Ryota said, Tonight. My place. My mom is making stew. Too much stew. Always too much. Come over. Bring Jin. Bring Hana. No excuses. No disappearing. Just come. Eat. Leave.
Kaito said, Okay.
Ryota said, Okay. Good. I will tell her. She will be happy. She likes you. She says you are polite. I say you are quiet. She says quiet is polite. I say quiet is suspicious. She says I am suspicious. She is right.
Kaito said, You are.
Ryota said, Hey. Rude. Accurate. But rude.
They reached the classroom. They stopped at the door. Ryota put his hand on Kaito’s shoulder. He squeezed. It was firm. It was brief. He let go. He opened the door. He walked in. He started talking to someone else. 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚
Kaito stood in the hallway. He watched him go. He felt the spot on his shoulder. It was warm. It lingered.
Jin stood beside him. Jin looked at the door. He looked at Kaito.
Jin said, He cares.
Kaito said, Know.
Jin said, It is a risk.
Kaito said, Know.
Jin said, It is worth it.
Kaito said, Yes.
Jin walked into the classroom. Hana waited. She looked at Kaito. She smiled. She walked in. Kaito followed. He sat at his desk. He took out his notebook. He opened it.
He looked at the page. The numbers were there. The count. The seals. The cracks. He looked at the blank space at the bottom. He picked up his pen. He did not write a number. He wrote a word.
Friends.
He closed the notebook. He put it away. He looked at the front of the class. The teacher entered. The lesson began. Kaito listened. He took notes. He stayed awake.
Kuro said, You are protecting them. They are protecting you. It is a balanced exchange. Do not ruin it by trying to carry it all.
Kaito said, Trying.
Kuro said, Try harder. Or stop trying alone. Those are the options.
Kaito looked at Ryota’s back. Ryota was raising his hand. He was answering a question. He was wrong. The teacher corrected him. Ryota laughed. The class laughed.
Kaito did not laugh. He almost did. He felt the urge. It was small. It was there. He let it stay. He did not push it away.
The bell rang. The class ended. The students moved. Kaito packed his bag. He stood up. He walked to the window. He looked out at the city. The Grey District was visible in the distance. The shadows were long. The cracks were waiting.
He would go back tonight. He would seal them. He would fight. He would bleed. He would come back. He would eat stew. He would sit at the table. He would listen to Ryota talk.
He would say three words. He would mean ten. He would carry the weight. He would share the load.
Kaito said, Ready.
Zephyr said, For what.
Kaito said, Everything.
He turned away from the window. He walked to the door. He joined his friends. They walked down the hall. They were loud. They were alive. They were here.
He was here too. For now. For today. For the stew. For the question. For the answer.
It was enough.
