Cards Of The Silent King-Chapter 39: The Morning After
The toast was burnt. The edges were black. The center was warm.
Kaito stood in the kitchen. The light was grey. The clock on the stove read 6:15 A.M.
He ate the toast. He did not taste it. He chewed. He swallowed.
The deck lay on the table. Sixteen cards. They were face down. They waited.
Kaito wiped his hands on a towel. He dried them completely. He sat down.
He picked up the first card. The Ace of Spades. Kuro.
He held it for three seconds. He did not speak. He pushed a thought into the paper. Ready.
The card vibrated. Once. He put it down.
He picked up the second. The King of Fangs. Fenrir.
He thought: Stay close.
The card warmed in his hand. He put it down.
He went through the deck. One by one. Luna. Raikou. Sakura. Orion.
He did not summon them. This was not a battle. This was acknowledgment. He did this every morning. Today, it mattered more.
He reached the last card. The newest one. Orion. The target symbol glowed faintly.
Kaito said: "Report."
Orion said: "Quiet."
Kaito said: "For now."
Orion said: "They are waiting. Like us."
Kaito put the card down. He gathered the deck. He squared the edges. He slid them into the inner pocket of his jacket.
He stood up. He picked up his bag. He turned off the kitchen light.
The apartment was silent. The dust motes danced in the streetlight coming through the window.
Kaito thought: Twelve hours.
He thought: Jin said twelve.
He thought: We will be ready.
He opened the door. He stepped into the hallway. He locked it.
The stairs were familiar. Three flights. Concrete. Cold.
He walked outside. The air was cool. The sun was rising. The sky was pale blue.
The city was waking up. Cars started. Doors opened. People walked to the station.
Kaito walked toward the school. He kept his hands in his pockets. His right hand touched the cards.
He reached the corner of his block. Jin was there. He leaned against the wall. He held a vending machine coffee.
Jin said: "You look rested."
Kaito said: "Two hours."
Jin said: "Better than zero."
Kaito stopped. He stood next to Jin. They did not look at each other. They looked at the street.
Kaito said: "Pattern."
Jin said: "Stable."
Kaito said: "Seals."
Jin said: "Holding."
Kaito nodded. He started walking. Jin fell into step beside him.
They walked in silence. The streetlights flickered off. The sun took over.
A delivery truck passed. The driver waved. Jin waved back. Kaito did not.
Kaito thought: Normal.
He thought: This is what we protect.
He thought: The truck. The wave. The coffee.
They reached the school gate. It was open. Students flowed through. Uniforms. Bags. Voices.
Ryota was at the entrance. He waved both arms. He held three bags of chips.
Ryota said: "You’re late. I was about to eat your share."
Kaito said: "Sorry."
Ryota said: "Liar. You’re exactly on time. I’m early. There’s a difference."
Kaito took a bag. It was salt and vinegar. His favorite.
Ryota said: "Jin. You want one."
Jin said: "No."
Ryota said: "More for me. Less sodium anyway. My mom is on a kick."
They walked into the building. The hallway was loud. Lockers slammed. Shoes squeaked.
Kaito moved through the crowd. He did not bump into anyone. He knew where the gaps were.
He reached the classroom. He sat at his desk. He put his bag on the floor.
Hana was at the desk in front of him. She turned around. She held a juice box.
She put it on his desk. She did not speak. She smiled.
Kaito said: "Thanks."
Hana said: "Four words. You’re splurging."
Kaito said: "Big day."
Hana said: "Test?"
Kaito said: "Something like that."
Hana studied his face. She knew he was lying. She did not call him on it.
Hana said: "Well. Good luck."
Kaito said: "You too."
She turned back around. She opened her notebook. She started writing.
Kaito looked at the juice box. It was cold. Condensation formed on the paper.
He picked it up. He put it in his bag. He would drink it later.
Ryota sat down on his left. He spun a pen. He talked to anyone who would listen.
Ryota said: "Did you see the new update. The patch notes are insane. They nerfed the mages again. I told them. I literally told them."
Kaito listened. He did not respond. He watched the door.
Jin sat on his right. He opened a book. He read. He did not look up.
Kaito thought: Here.
He thought: All of us.
He thought: Safe.
The bell rang. It was loud. It cut through the noise.
Students moved to their seats. The teacher entered. He put his bag on the desk. He took out a marker.
Teacher said: "Open your books. Page forty."
The class opened their books. Pages turned. The sound was like wind.
Kaito opened his book. He looked at the page. He did not read the words.
He felt the cards in his pocket. They were warm. They were steady.
Kuro said: "Boring."
Kaito said: "Good."
Kuro said: "Boring is safe."
Kaito said: "Yes."
Kuro said: "For now."
Kaito looked out the window. The sky was clear. The clouds were gone.
He thought: Twelve hours.
He thought: Then the storm.
He thought: Until then. This.
He looked at Ryota. He was arguing with the person behind him about game mechanics.
He looked at Jin. He was taking notes. Precise. Clean.
He looked at Hana. She was listening to the teacher. She glanced back. She caught his eye.
She smiled. Just once. Small.
Kaito looked forward. He picked up his pen. He wrote the date at the top of the page.
He did not write anything else. He just held the pen.
The lesson continued. The teacher talked about history. Dates. Wars. Treaties.
Kaito thought: They write it down.
He thought: We live it.
He thought: Nobody knows.
The sun moved across the floor. It hit his shoes. It was warm.
Kaito thought: Arc one is done.
He thought: Arc two starts tonight.
He thought: We are ready.
He put the pen down. He folded his hands. He waited.
The bell would ring again. Lunch would come. Then afternoon classes.
Then the sun would set.
Then the work would begin.
But for now. The classroom. The friends. The juice box.
This was the mission.
Protect this.
Keep this.
Hold the line.
Kaito breathed. In. Out. 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚
The cards hummed. Quietly.
He was not alone.
He had never been less alone.
The teacher wrote on the board. The chalk squeaked.
Kaito watched the dust fall.
He waited for the bell.
He waited for the night.
He waited.
