Caught by the Mad Alpha King-Chapter 326: Bold omega
The breach unfolded with a precision that never made the news because it was over too quickly to become a spectacle.
Charges snapped against steel. Locks gave way. The wide doors of the warehouse on Pier Seven were forced open in a clean, coordinated sweep, and Dax’s men poured in like a tide that had been waiting for permission to rise. The space inside was cavernous, stacked high with containers and office partitions, lit too brightly for a meeting that had claimed to be discreet.
Shouts followed. A few weapons were raised, more in reflex than in real resistance, and were immediately knocked aside. Hands went up. Bodies were driven to their knees and then to the floor, restrained with the efficient, almost clinical movements of people who had done this far too often to feel anything about it.
Verdan’s people filled the room.
Dockmasters with political smiles, union enforcers who had learned to look legitimate, and men whose wealth came from controlling what passed through the port and who believed that distance from the capital still meant safety. They stared in stunned disbelief as the perimeter closed around them, as comms were cut, and as documents and drives were seized and sealed into evidence cases.
And there were gaps.
Chairs left empty at the long table. A second set of glasses untouched. Security positions that should have been doubled and weren’t.
Morcant had not come.
They had let Verdan take the risk, let them gather, and let them be the ones visible enough to be taken. It was a neat calculation, and a cold one, to use the king’s arrival as a blade to remove a rival without ever stepping into its path.
Dax watched from the edge of the scene, hands clasped loosely behind his back, posture relaxed in the way that meant he was already several moves ahead. His gaze moved from face to face, cataloguing reactions: the ones who were angry, the ones who were terrified, and the few who were already trying to calculate how to survive what came next.
"So," he said quietly into his comm, "Morcant decided to observe rather than attend."
"Affirmative, Your Majesty," his security chief replied. "Verdan is in custody. We’re securing financials, encrypted channels, and everything they brought with them. Looks like Morcant used the opportunity to thin the field."
Dax inclined his head a fraction. "They’ve just announced themselves as patient. That will make them interesting."
He had not come to end this in one night. Belvare was a tangle of old protections and older loyalties, and it would take time to unravel. Weeks, perhaps. Pressure applied slowly until every hidden structure began to crack.
He had already decided to stay until it was clear.
Then his private channel vibrated.
Chris.
Chris: ’I can’t stop thinking about your hands.’
Dax’s eyes remained on the warehouse as Verdan’s people were led out in lines, restrained and silent now, but desire coiled low in his chest.
Chris: ’Specifically, your thumbs. The way they press against my jaw when you kiss me. The way they stroke my bottom lip before you bite it. The way they dig into my hips when you’re inside me, holding me still because you know I’ll try to run.’
Dax’s jaw tightened. His men were securing the last of Verdan’s leadership, but his focus was splintering. The scent of swamp water filled the air, but beneath it, he could almost smell Chris’s traces on him, sweet and sharp, the way he got when he was aroused and angry.
Chris: ’I’m touching myself right now.’
"For fuck’s sake, Christopher."
Dax’s fingers tightened around the edge of the console, knuckles whitening for a mere second before control slid back into place. The warehouse was still alive with motion - men being moved, evidence catalogued, voices low and efficient over comms - but for a heartbeat the world narrowed to the words glowing on his screen.
Chris had chosen escalation. Dax was fine with the playful innuendo before, amused really, but this was escalating in a delicious way. One that he planned to exploit.
Dax typed without looking at the keys. Dax: ’How?’
The reply came with a speed that suggested Chris had been waiting for the question.
Chris: ’With my left hand. How do you think I can write?’
Dax stared at the line for a moment, a slow breath leaving him through his nose.
Of course.
The warehouse was still being cleared, Verdan’s people were led away under guard, and the night was unfolding with methodical efficiency. He kept his posture relaxed, his attention outwardly on the operation, but the corner of his mouth curved with a restrained, dangerous kind of amusement.
Dax: ’You are being deliberately impossible.’
The typing indicator appeared again almost at once.
Chris: ’Took you long enough. You asked "how." I answered.’
Chris:
You know, it is quite inconvenient to be in a relationship with a king. How would I look Rowan in the eyes if I suddenly decided to... requisition recreational equipment? I need something to keep me busy while you’re away.
Dax let out a quiet breath that was very nearly a laugh. Around him, his people continued their work, the clink of restraints, the low murmur of reports, and the rhythm of control being reasserted over a city that had thought itself beyond reach.
Dax: ’You are inventing problems.’
Chris: ’I am managing circumstances.’
Dax’s gaze lifted briefly to the dark water beyond the docks, then back to the glowing screen. His pheromones deepened and reached the men who believed that the dark water would be their safe haven. Just a few seconds later, noisy gasps from people fighting for their breath were heard.
Dax’s security moved at once. The ones who had thought the shadows and water would hide them were on their knees within seconds, restrained and hauled away. No surprise showed on the faces of the guards; they had long since learned what their king’s presence alone could do.
Only when the situation was fully under control did Dax look back to the channel.
Dax: ’You will survive a few hours without turning the royal supply chain into a personal catalog.’
Chris: ’Bold of you to assume I won’t try.’
