Chapter 34: Commission in Elements

In this world, nothing was free, especially from experienced merchants, but that didn’t mean that a deal was always bad, even if only the merchant knew the details.

Tap

Menir and Ethan sat down on the floor as the Hollow Orbs appeared before them on pieces of cloth.

"Good, you may begin." Louis nodded. "Make your Circles rotate, but during the Revolve, direct your power not at the energy around you, as it is of no use to you, but at the orb in front of you, at the element trapped inside."

Ethan took a deep breath and began first. He saw no reason to wait. He didn’t know if he would succeed or where the fragments would lead him, but his desire to find the answers to these questions was growing stronger.

Sparks flew from his Construct, setting the gears and his Circle in motion.

Soon, a dense, dark aura emerged from his body, but a small part of it was a gray-purple haze.

Louis’s pupils narrowed in shock, but he quickly pulled himself together, not letting them see his surprise.

However, no one was looking at him. Menir sprang into action as well. Her aura remained unchanged, crimson, thick as blood, and dark as death.

This time, the corners of Louis’s lips simply curved upward.

’Not bad, not bad at all. But will it be enough? I have no reason to hold them back any longer, and... it would be shameful to do so.’

Soon, the fragments reappeared, first near Ethan, then around Menir. There was no change from their last attempt — it was time to use their expensive purchases.

Crack. Crack. Crack.

Under pressure, the orb cracked, releasing a dark flame. In a normal situation, it would have dissipated, but the element quickly realized that there was a suitable source nearby.

Like a moth flying toward the sun, the flame headed toward Ethan, circling around him, faster and faster to merge with his aura.

In a heartbeat, Ethan’s aura became more active, like a fire with a smoldering piece of coal thrown into it.

Some of the fragments disappeared immediately, realizing that they no longer belonged here, while the rest remained, approaching Ethan close enough for him to see what was hidden within them.

The gray lands, dark grass, and a lifeless sky under the light of the hidden moon were the first things that reflected in his mind.

Then, he saw a figure in armor that would appear in the middle of the field, then find itself deep underground.

The fragments chose Ethan’s target. This was influenced not only by which element prevailed in him at the moment, but also by his role as a Carrier, as a simple man living his life.

There was no need for maps or guides. The flow of energy led Ethan’s mind down dozens of different paths, each bringing him to a single point, where the creature that would give him his Element Spark to complete the First Ring awaited him.

After a while, Ethan opened his eyes while his aura slowly calmed down. Soon, Menir’s aura weakened as well.

They had both found suitable creatures. They both believed that it had to be a monster. It was the most logical option, but that wasn’t always the case.

Clap.

Louis clapped his hands to get their attention.

"Alright, judging by the look on your faces, you did well, didn’t you?"

Ethan clenched his fist tightly as he smiled.

"Hell yeah, now I know where to go. It took so much energy to form the First Ring, so I won’t let the last step hold me back."

"Yes, I agree..." Menir muttered, sounding particularly grim.

No one paid any attention to it.

"Alright, then good luck to you. Now, get out of my shop. I’ve got a lot of work to do."

Ethan raised an eyebrow in indignation.

"Agh? You could have waited at least a minute!"

"Hah, every second is precious, especially mine."

...

Louis was more than serious, so Ethan and Menir found themselves on the street, knowing full well where their next destination was.

Despite his words, Louis was in no hurry to return to work. Instead, he walked over to the wall and pressed a hidden button.

Click.

The wooden panel opened, revealing a mechanism with an iron frame. Gears slowly rotated inside, causing runes on the stone layers to flash, as did two flasks. They usually remained empty as they were only used to absorb elements from resources.

But... It could also work directly with the source, even without the source itself knowing about it.

Now, two clumps of flame were spinning inside the flasks — one crimson, half black, and the other gray-purple, which consisted mostly of darkness.

"Well, well... This girl’s element is unusual, but Ethan, you’ve surprised me. I didn’t expect to meet one like you today."

Louis picked up the second flask, looking at the rare flame with delight.

"Hello, the Chaos Carrier."

Then, the gleam in his eyes was replaced by seriousness.

"The purity is very low. However, I shouldn’t have expected anything else, considering how I obtained these elements. In any case, after purification, I’ll definitely be able to get some chaos and death blood. This could prove very useful."

Louis pulled out the two flasks and closed the panel.

"Let’s call this a commission. After all, they took up a lot of my time, right?"

...

Step.

Menir stepped forward as her body leaned to the side. Before she knew it, the ground was too close.

At the last moment, Ethan caught her, preventing her from falling.

"Hey, are you okay?"

"Yeah, just... I suddenly felt very tired. I guess connecting with the fragments was more exhausting than I expected."

The reason was different, although it only affected Menir, who did not have the same endurance as Ethan.

"Hah, don’t worry. A little sleep and you’ll be fine. Let’s do that and get going. Whose Element Spark should we go for first, mine or yours?"

His eyes were full of excitement, he was ready to go at any moment. All he needed was a gesture.

Strangely, Menir’s eyes did not show the same optimism.

"Ethan... We should part ways. It’s time for us to go on our own."
