Chaos Carrier With A Broken Talent-Chapter 39: Rogues
Every few seconds, lightning flashed high in the sky, illuminating the dark clouds. Everyone rushed to get the required number of grim shards, otherwise, the next thunder strike would turn them into handfuls of ash.
There were many Grim Knights, but not enough for everyone. Each participant needed four grim shards to protect themselves from the thunder strike, which meant that everyone had to kill four Grim Knights, but there simply weren’t that many of them.
Moreover, with each lightning strike, the number of monsters would decrease until the Lost Knight showed himself.
Well, that would only work if none of the Carriers died, which was impossible. The Grim Knights were getting fewer by the moment, but the same was true for the Carriers.
Unlike the monsters, who did not attack each other, the humans had other plans.
Ethan and Klaus were talking about something when a shadow appeared behind Klaus.
A single reflection in Ethan’s eyes was enough to trigger Klaus’s instincts as he jumped aside.
In a heartbeat, two blades sliced through the air where he had just been. With a roll, the woman landed on the ground, staring intently at Klaus. A long, dark cloak covered her body, hiding the upper part of her face.
’Unbelievable,’ she muttered under her breath. ’He had less than a third of a second... That young man’s reflexes are impressive.’
With a rustle of leaves, two figures in similar cloaks appeared from the other side. In front was a large bald man with a wide grin, and to his right was a scrawny man with deep-set eyes and pale skin.
"Hahaha, you weren’t as easy prey as I thought!"
The bald man laughed.
Then, his eyes filled with coldness.
"Alright, give us your grim shards and we’ll let you go."
The women and the scrawny man chose their targets, their blades ready to strike.
"If you think this is a negotiation, you’re wrong. You only have one chance, otherwise..." He shook his blood-covered blade. "You’ll find out what I did to the other two like you. Hahaha!"
Ethan and Klaus exchanged glances as their eyes widened for a moment. They were surprised, but not because they were being threatened by rogues. No, the reason was different.
They saw no fear in each other’s eyes.
One of them learned how to survive in the harsh city streets since childhood, the other trained to become a skilled swordsman at the Hail of Swords.
Each of them was ready to kill, especially if their lives were at risk.
They preferred monsters as their targets, but if a human wanted to kill them, they had no problem with that.
It was important that they understood this about each other in that one brief glance.
Crackle. Crackle. Crackle.
The sound of moving gears echoed in Ethan’s mind as a dark cross ran across his arm.
Before the rogues could react, he attacked. The dark tip connected by a thread pierced the scrawny man’s shoulder.
Then, Ethan disappeared, reappearing right in front of the man.
’FUCK!’
The last thing the scrawny man saw was Ethan’s palm.
The blast of darkness blew the man’s head off, leaving him no chance of survival. His decapitated body collapsed to the ground. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶
Two dark shards fell out of his pocket, attracting Ethan’s attention.
They weren’t lying. They had already killed several men, so they had several grim shards, but not enough for the three of them.
The bald man’s face reddened with anger.
"You bastard! I’ll tear you to pieces!"
With that, he slammed his fist into the ground, causing stone pillars to rise up like a row of spikes, heading straight for Ethan.
Not wanting to waste the power of his Catalyst on another use, Ethan waved his hand and darted to the side, dodging the oncoming spikes.
He disappeared into the tall grass, leaving the bald man in a panic. Now they had switched places. Ethan was the hunter who could attack the bald man at any moment from any direction. It was unknown if the bald man would be able to defend himself.
’Shit, I thought these two were just weaklings. How do two youths know how to fight?!’ He exclaimed inside, looking around.
Step. Step. Step.
At the same time, Klaus was approaching the woman. They were left alone. Running away was not an option because most of the grim shards were held by the bald man. The woman didn’t have enough shards to defend herself.
She had to fight.
"The fact that you dodged my attack means nothing!" She exclaimed as two water daggers flew over her shoulders. The sharp tips aimed at Klaus, following his movements.
"Sure."
Klaus nodded deeply, his sword pointed at the ground.
"Everything will be decided in battle. Two fight, but only one will live. That’s what everyone at the Hail of Swords knows, but rogues like you can’t understand that."
After that, Klaus pressed his left hand to his chest as the gears deep in his eyes whirred.
A six-winged seal appeared on his hand as powerful gusts of wind burst forth.
Klaus leaned forward as he muttered:
"The first wing."
The woman’s eyes widened. A single left wing, woven from raging gusts of wind, grew out of Klaus’s back.
A flash ran across his sword as the wing came into motion.
"NO!"
In the blink of an eye, Klaus closed the distance between them, ending up behind the woman. Her water daggers didn’t have time to attack, nor could she dodge.
The gusts of wind tore her cloak off as a diagonal red line ran along her body.
Thump.
Her torso slid along the cut before collapsing to the ground. A fountain of blood gushed from her lower body, actively flooding the surface.
Klaus nodded slightly as his Construct stopped rotating. His task was complete.
The bald man was too busy looking for Ethan to pay attention to this.
Klaus didn’t know if he should help Ethan or not, but he soon got the answer to his question.
A stone flew out of the grass and fell to the ground. Unlike the Grim Knight, the bald man noticed it.
That brief moment was enough.
Thrust.
The crimson dagger came out of the bald man’s chest when Ethan appeared from behind, covering the man’s mouth. Blood poured through his fingers under the man’s eyes, trembling with rage.
A few seconds later, the bald man’s body went limp as he joined his mates.
Klaus grinned smugly.
’Nah, he definitely didn’t need my help. That guy’s good.’
