Chronicle of the 70s-Chapter 402 - 377: Guests Arriving
During summer vacation, a group of guests arrived at home.
It was Qin Shouren and Yang Huan, bringing along Xiong Youxin, who was already a junior high school girl.
Qin Shouren came to see his son and to discuss a matter.
That was the batch of medical equipment which was forcibly purchased by the hospital, initially marketed by Qin Shouhan.
Originally, as the hospital director, Qin Shouren had the absolute authority to purchase medical equipment.
But the health bureau’s senior leadership talked to him, implying he should follow suit and buy the same equipment as everyone else, citing convenience for patient care.
However, Qin Shouren thought the quality of those equipment was nowhere near the imported ones after inspecting them. They were less practical; while an imported device could perform several checks, Qin Shouhan’s company’s equipment could only do one. To buy them would mean needing a variety and they would also take up a lot of space.
Therefore, he felt it was not worth the purchase, especially since the price was only slightly cheaper than imported equipment.
But the pressure from the health bureau was irritating him. After signing the agreement, he took leave, and since Xiong Youxin also had summer vacation and insisted on visiting the twins, he wanted to see his grandson too. He thought it was a good opportunity to take a break and talk to his son about recent events.
After hearing this, Qin Xi frowned deeply. Qin Shouhan really was relentless. What on earth was he trying to do?
Li Xianglu then had a suggestion: "Dad, why not open a private hospital with Aunt Yang, why bother staying at a hospital you don’t like?"
Su Yan chimed in: "That’s actually a good idea. There are many private hospitals in Hong Kong with great services, good equipment, and excellent facilities, which many people are willing to visit."
Qin Shouren was surprised that his daughter-in-law could conceive such an idea. Instinctually, he was somewhat resistant as their generation was supposed to dedicate their lives to the country—how could they be selfish? Moreover, they were educated with state funds. Yet, on the other hand, he thought that if he could establish a hospital according to his own wishes, some special diseases could be treated for free, and they could purchase useful and high-end medical equipment.
Thinking this, Qin Shouren felt very conflicted.
Qin Xi said, "Now is not the time. The cost of starting a hospital is unimaginable and not something that can be settled in a few words. I don’t know what dad is thinking. Do you plan to stay at that hospital?"
Qin Shouren was indeed deeply conflicted about this issue. He did not want to leave the hospital, but those equipment always made him feel uncomfortable as if he had swallowed a fly.
Seeing Qin Shouren torn, Su Yan suggested: "Why not stay a few more days, spend some time with your grandchildren, and ease your mind before making a decision."
Qin Shouren also felt that there was no rush in this matter—it was better to slow down and think it over.
In the evening, after the children fell asleep, Qin Xi and Li Xianglu began to discuss a matter.
It was about the Swiss Bank deposit and the key inside the red sandalwood box.
Qin Xi’s point was that it was already the year ’85 and the money would slowly deflate. It was better to take it out early, invest in some land, and then establish a fund.
Li Xianglu felt it was also time. Regarding the fund, she believed it should focus on education first, followed by medical care. It was impossible to use that money for universal free healthcare; it would be used up in at most five years.
Thus, it had to be spent on expensive treatments and simple preventive vaccines and medicines.
For instance, de-worming medication for children, and vaccines to prevent meningitis and hepatitis could be supplied free for everyone.
And all these would require oversight institutions to coordinate, which would be a huge project.
The couple talked until late into the night before going to bed.
In the morning, they both got up late, and the two kids who woke up early ran out to play in the yard, bare-bottomed.
Seeing this, Su Yan could only helplessly clean up the younger two, dress them, and settle them down for breakfast, without disturbing the sleeping couple.
Qin Shouren had a lot on his mind as well last night and didn’t sleep well. He looked listless in the morning and went back to rest after breakfast.
When Li Xianglu and Qin Xi woke up, it was already past ten o’clock. Seeing that the two small beds at the foot of their own were empty, they smiled and quickly got dressed and went out.
Su Yan said to them, "Just eat something simple for now, we can have a good meal at noon."
Li Xianglu asked about Mr. Qin, and seeing that no one was around, she then talked about what she and Qin Xi had discussed the day before.
After listening, Su Yan nodded and said: "That’s good, this idea is very good. In that case, you’ll need to make a plan for at least twenty years and then implement it step by step."
Funds were already familiar in Hong Kong, with some privately established and others organized by the community, all kinds.
The most important thing right now was how to withdraw that sum of money and also about that safe.
Qin Xi served two bowls of porridge and took two boiled eggs.
The couple ate simply, while Su Yan explained some of the details they needed to pay attention to. Su Yan herself had an account at Swiss Bank, so she was very clear about their policies.
At this time, Gu Niannian also arrived, and along with Xiong Youxin, the four of them began to play the game of teacher teaching students.
Of course, being the eldest, Xiong Youxin played the teacher, and Gu Niannian acted as the class leader.
Ba’er was unhappy; he wanted to be the class leader too, and Ba Yi also discontentedly banged on the table.
Xiong Youxin helplessly arranged three class leaders for her small class of three, and now everyone was a class leader. With that settled, all three were happy to start the class.
Xiong Youxin grew quickly. Yang Huan was not tall, only 1.6 meters, but Xiong Youxin was at least 1.65 meters tall now, probably following her father’s build. She used to be dark and thin when she was younger, and now she had become fair-skinned, especially with her pair of eyes that were extremely bright and expressive, and she continued to admire Su Yan as ever.
Not long after, Qin Shouren also woke up. He sat at the table somewhat sheepishly, embarrassed that he had taken a nap as a guest.
Over here, Sister Su had already started making lunch. Considering the hot weather, she planned to make cold noodles with a few cold dishes.
Li Xianglu stood up to help by cooking some beef, intending to make a cold beef salad, and then thought about and slowly simmered a pot of red bean porridge.
By the time Li Xianglu finished her busy work, Sister Su’s meal was ready too. Simply, they moved the big table out, and everyone sat together.
Xiong Youxin had played all morning and was now famished, gobbling up two big bowls of cold noodles, a sight to behold, while the twins and Gu Niannian looked on with envy.
Li Xianglu felt somewhat helpless at the three children’s reaction, not thinking it was normal at all.
After eating, everyone rested for a while before taking a nap. Li Xianglu and Qin Xi hesitantly stayed instead of leaving, talking with Su Yan and the old master for a while.
Qin Shouren and his wife had stayed in Huai County for four or five days before a phone call summoned them away. They were told that a patient with a heart condition urgently needed surgery, and there was no one in the hospital daring to undertake such an operation.
